WOw Sjors, you didnt waste any time assembling your serving machine, looks good. So, where are those stays????? . . . . . . . . . waiting. "Ordered the wrong rope" sounds like an excuse to do some Klompen instead of some Buildin' Sam

Sjors, I dont recall how long that took, a week maybe? Not long considering customs. I think print time was longer than post time. Sam

Nine!!! That makes the detail even more impressive then. I am having a serious case of model envy now. I need to explore msw more it appears. Sam

Sorry to hear about the setbacks Sjors. On a happy note, your serving machine showed up on my door step the other day. THANKS!!! Mighty kind of you sir. :D Chucks service is really great isnt it? I have ordered things on a Sunday and had them in hand on Tuesday and we are on opposite sides of the country. How long is your new toy taking to your world? Sam

Dennis, I can barely keep track of one build, how do you manage to keep track of four? Sam

Thanks all, Happy to hear my little story brought some entertainment as it was intended. I guess I have been "served" by the gremlin. Sometimes I get a serious case of Shiny Kit Syndrome. The new toy is stained and I hope to get a couple of coats of linseed oil on it then get it assembled. Might have a pic of it and a couple of served samples over the weekend. Work may have other ideas though. Sam

Thanks Rich! Plugging away here, not much to show. I ordered some stuff from Chuck, rope and such, something strange happened while I was ordering, think I may need medical attention. I had looked at Chucks serving machine and said "NO! I am not serving my first rigging attempt" "Carry on, nothing to see here." I placed my block order and suddenly I felt lightheaded and everything went dark with white flashes. There was a roaring in my ears and a taste of copper in my mouth, I was paralyzed and couldnt move. A sense of impending doom had overcome me. After a moment it passed but I was left with a feeling tat something wasnt quite right and I could hear a distant cackling of the Gremlin in the back of my head. With my order placed I brushed it off and carried on. The feeling of disquiet stayed with me for the next several days until my order arrived from Chuck, a BOX when I was expecting a manila envelope.....hhmmmm. Lets open it and see whats inside. WHAT?!?!? A serving machine? Stupid Gremlin seduced the Tool Addict again. Sigh, I guess I will just have to serve me some ropes then.... We are back on Full Speed Ahead at work and I feel a shift to Ludicrous Speed soon so posts will continue to be sporadic and small. If we can avoid Going Plaid I think I will survive to finish this build. Sam

Wow Mark, you've been busy! Nice looking rudder. To my eye at least cutting the rudder and re-gluing looks much better than scribing would have. Sam

Nick, I thought that also, but after checking several times I am using the Imperial Data page and not the Metric. Pretty baffled by this one. But then again, software and I dont always get along very well, "Here thar be gremlins." Edit: Found one gremlin. I had data in both the Imperial and Metric pages. Now the two files give me the same results, 1.59" for the bowsprit, which BTW is the area I have been working. Constructo plans show a bowsprit that is 7". To my uneducated eye it "looks" right. Now I just need to know which ship type if any, is correct for my build. Sam

Sometime back I down loaded the Excel file for Period ship tables with the intention of using this in place of Constructos masting and rigging sizes for my 1:51 Enterprise 1799. I have run into a couple of dilemmas: Which of the ship types should I be using under the 1794 to 1809 year? Sloops appear to be the smallest but the file I downloaded a couple of years ago gives me a bowsprit length of 17.48" long when I enter a beam of 22.5 and a length of 84'5. That's almost as long as the hull itself. These numbers are based on what I understand to be the correct beam and deck length. They also more or less work out based on scaling my plans. The dates on this file are Created (downloaded) Feb 21, 2013 and a file size of 1.7MB I went to the Database of articles here on MSW and downloaded the current version thinking maybe there was an error that had been corrected and now I get a bowsprit length of 1.62"! The file size is the same so I am not sure if this is still the same version or not. I believe I have entered the 3 key numbers the same on both; 1:51 for scale 22.5 and 84.5 under the build years 1794 to 1809. Below are some screen shots if they help. The first 3 are from the file I downloaded tonight, the fourth is from my file downloaded in 2013. The last is something that popped up while I was doing screen shots. The above are from the latest download This is from my 2013 download. All the variables are the same as above. This started when I was doing screen shots and is from the download from tonight. Other than entering the 3 variables I havent done anything else that I am aware of. Now after all this I have two questions, 1) what am I doing wrong and 2) What ship type should I be using or is this spread sheet useless for this build? Thanks for any help, Sam

That looks awesome Mark, take a bow. How does silver maple compare to white maple, I have never worked with it

Robbyn, I wish I could help you with the copper but I havent done any coppering yet. I feel your pain with minimal build time, other than a couple of hours last Saturday I have barely touched my build since early December. Hang in there you'll get it in the end, I dont know about you but I have a greater sense of accomplishment when I finish something I worked really hard to complete/master vs something that just fell together. Like Grant said "We are all a patient bunch here." Besides, this is fun remember? Sam

I think you will need a way to hold your dowel secure, some kind of vice leaving one edge proud. Plane/file it flat to the width you want. Some guide lines will help, if you have some angle brass you can make two lines parallel and carefully file to them. From there you should be able to transfer square lines to the ends and make your next set of guide lines. You might be better off buying some square stock and transitioning to round where needed. Its not really difficult, a good sharp chisel and/or a micro plane, a file or two is all you need in addition to a way to mark the stock. This link may help if you choose this direction: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/12265-mast-shaping-help/?hl=octagon#entry371234 Chucks Confederancy log and his Syren instructions will help also. Thanks for the comments and likes - good to know people have not given up on me yet!! Brian, I have turned several barrel shaped posts to support her out of the same wood. they are slightly different heights; they vary by about 6mm/1/4 inch. My plan is to set the stern just slightly lower then the bow to give an impression of motion. I had considered giving her a slight lean also since I plan on rigging her in a tack but I am not sure I can support her properly at this point. I should have inserted some threaded inserts before I started the planking. Next build.... Carl, when to stop and haw to complete something has been a challenge all my life. Mark, even small steps are good. Now its back to work and full speed ahead. we have two more weeks of long hours and then a break, although we were contacted Friday by a potentially new client to do some work for an attraction opening this May. That has the potential of turning into another race to the finish. Sam

Well now, When last we spoke Sjors was confused/not understanding, J was describing going through mine and Better Halfs life's collections as lovely and I was having to arrange for the repair of a grenaded garage door. Since then the holidays have past we took a trip to "Lost Wages" where had a great steak at Binnions, and work has gone from zero to 100MPH again. Needless to say, very little progress has been made in the shipyard. Sometime back I picked up a piece of lumber for a base, I really liked the grain, it reminds me of flowing water. Yesterday I made up an alcohol dye of vintage maple and wiped it on I will get some clear on it this week i hope. I am contemplating on doing a French Polish on it but only going to satin rather than a high gloss. I am mildly concerned that the finish is too light though, it may compete with the ship itself. I may go with a dark garnet shellac to darken it a bit more, we shall see. I have more or less finished the bowsprit and jib boom. I am not sure haw HOW far I will detail this, its very easy for me to get carried away looking at other builds here. So much of this build has been simplified that I need to reign myself in. That's all for now, hopefully more soon. Sam edited for (some) typos

Rich, Welcome home!! Go into the rigging forum and look for a post about stroping blocks. in there is a video from modeler 12. That helped me tremendously. Also I think it chucks strength or confederacy build you can down load the instructions and in there are details on stropping blocks. I am back on 12 hour days, if I don't fall asleep when I get home I will search for the links. This should get you started though. Sam

Can't Find Thin Brass Strips
src replied to mikiek's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
Another source is Albion Alloys, they have some very nice slip fit tube as well as strips in brass and aluminum. http://www.albionhobbies.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/AA-Precision-Metals-2014-4pp.pdf Sam -
Sjors, She is coming along well - as if we expected any less. Murphy and Hennie, I agree with Sjors, a build log is never boring, its the best way to get help and encouragement. It takes very little time to snap a picture and post it. More importantly - in my mind at least - are the people whom you will meet. Sam
