Build log part 64 making the main Yard..... the plans calls for a 6 mm dowel but I find that too flimsy, so I Chose a 8 mm dowel, put on an octogonal middle section with 7,2 mm flat widths and tapered the Ends down to 3 mm. This is the second Trial but I think it works out OK now and I shall do both (raw) lower Yards in this way Nils

Rigging Tension-how do you do it?

tensioning Standing rigging, how I do it.... I think it depends on the thread material used, the sequence of what rope(s) must go first, staggered what next, how to secure the knots, seizings, work symetricly, check alignment of masts, etc.... A proven sequence can be : begin with the mizzen, and the shrouds.... left right, left right... always check the mast behavior inbetween, very slightly Tension the mast to rake backwards 1-2 degrees. The shrouds are tensioned by the deadeye laces. The ratlines get attached much later. Use a "dead" thread material, eg. Polyester thread. A natural thread based material will be a bit elastic and may turn out with slag afterwards, unless that is specialy wanted. Secure all knots with a drop of CA , because Polyester has the tendency to slip the knots (use toothpick for application, the CA in a lttle plastic cap) put on a preliminary dummy stay at the ship middle axis to Support the mast Forward-wise in this Position. Put on symetricly one or two backstays (mast in this Position) Now put on the actual mizzen stay and Tension in Forward direction, until you get the final and wanted rake. You can feel how all the before backward orientated shrouds and backstays become tensioned, Always intermeduiate mast alignment check necessary Result is a wonderful tight Mizzen-rigging and a straight mast. Proceed likewise with the other masts, shrouds, stays and backstays Nils -

Looks very good so far Popeye, are the other 2 hulls staggered in Status process, or are you pacing foreward with the first one alone ? Nils

Hi Jack, I love the combination of the CAD design and the resulting precision scroll saw cutting of the Frames. Very well Fitting Framework, especialy the two Long reinforcement beams under the main deck fit very well. Also thanks for sharing the and clse up, Pictures of the "Le Cyclope" under sails, thats real eyecandy in every Detail one can see seldom in this quality Nils

Mark, thanks for your Input on this..., yes it makes sense to loosten the foremost shroud when bracing and perhaps even also the second when bracing sharp, I have never seen this before, but perhaps someday there be an old painting or so showing this Detail in more Close up.... Nils

Thank you Martin and Mike, the question with the Yard moving away from the mast when braced, realy concerns me because I feel everything is in the correct Position acc. to the plan. I know from the tallships I built before, from the geometrical design of the Yard-racks that the racks together with the Yards describe a halfcircle around the mast and so they do`nt interfere with the shrouds and backstays, and do`nt foul with the shrouds The lower Pegasus Yards have no racks (only the adjustable truss pedant tackle), so probably the more the Yards are braced, the more ease is given to the truss pedants, regardless to the move away from the mast. Please give me a hint, if someone knows better.... Nils

I have please a question to thje comunity... when bracing the Yard it will foul the leeward shroud already at minimal brace angles. In order to avoid this the truss pendant will have to be given appropriate looseness horizontaly, but this will move the Yard quite a bit away from the mast. Sling and jeers will hold the Yard securely in vertical Level, but I not sure if this is foreseen the same way on the actual ship. Hopefully a fellow modeler with experience in braced Yards Position can kindly give me some advise on this. Many thanks in advance Nils Here a Little Illustration of what I mean...

Martin, thats right, and ist only the Standing rigging in the Moment, I`m working with pegs and tweezers, guess I know what I`ll be facing when the running rigging Comes on, let alone the sails.... here is a Little update on the status Nils Build log part 63

Thank you Martin, I find the rigging takes much more attention than building the hull. Lucky mor me I have the time but for example it took me the whole afternoon to do the catharpins and the port side futtock shrouds at the main mast top today Nils

Lovely model John, have you possibly been thinking of doing the "Genesta" model as the british challeger, Thats also one of my favorites..., and in opposite to the skimming "Puritan" sloop hull the "Genesta" is is a representative of those "plank on edge cutters", very deep but extreme seaworthy in rough water Nils
