    I finished the Morgan today!
Put up the last two whaleboats, added some rope coils to the cleated lift lines, and did a small bit of touch up painting. It really is a very busy model, and especially so with any added detailing.
I'll take comprehensive pictures once I set up some good lighting and a backdrop and post them in the gallery.

Now I need to decide on the next project, with the following on my shelf: Confederacy, Gunboat Philadelphia, Mortar Vessel Granado, Echo X-section, and English Pinnace (oof - how did I collect this much stuff while building the Morgan?)
I have an empty full size case since I gave away a Victory model I bought but did not build into which the Morgan will go so the case I got for the Morgan is empty. Which argues for the Granado or Philadelphia, but the x-section is muttering to me from its shelf.

I'll just bask in finishedness for a bit and decide later.

Just a off topic related remark.
Remember when a lot of us drank water from a old rubber garden hose....Now it would be a tragedy and might enlist a visit from the green police.
I still use all of the old  model paints  when I can find them and I am 77 1/2.

    Ronald,
What ships or what era are you looking for?  There's also Maryland Silver Company which has a large collection of American ships.  For French, there ANCRE.

How to sharpen tools is a bit of a controversial subject, but Ron you might be interested in the following video.

Don't worry about all those stones the fellow talks about. Two of them will be plenty. I do use a couple of stones in a wooden box that have been around for many years. But what I really like for small cutters is an Eze-lap, a small diamond coated 'file' that gives me an instant edge (even on #11 Exacto blades and other carving tools). I have a couple in the drawer right in front of me at the work bench and I can sharpen an Exacto blade faster than replacing it. Plus I will have a sharper edge than a new blade offers.
    Check out the following: http://eze-lap.com/woodworking_shop_machine_use/hone-stone/

Has anyone tried clamping with rare earth magnets? These are 1/4" diameter X 1/10" thick, get about 2lb pull, not sure if that's enough but if it is, they'd be perfect for things like inside gunwale/bulwark planking.

    Messis,

I completely agree with wefalks engineering point.  However, keep in mind this model, in all probability, is going to be static and certainly not subjected to the same strains and stresses of a working ship.

If you are building this on commission for display in a museum then you need to make it as accurate as possible and spare no expenses.  If you are building it to display in your living room who, other than you, will know if any part is completely accurate?  Either way, this is a model and it is in fact a representation and also because of scale it is nearly impossible to construct it exactly the same as a real ship would be built.

In the end, this is your ship and your build.  I suggest you do what you feel comfortable with.  Try to enjoy the hobby and don't let it overwhelm you.

Winsor and Newton Series 7 comes with good reviews - didn't know there was an acrylics issue I had never heard anyone mention this before.

I use the Tamiya Pros mainly because I like the grip to be as close to the tip as possible and generally you cannot go wrong with Tamiya, their tools are somewhat pricey but my view of Tamiya is you tend to get what you pay for.

I still have the full set of the black handle versions but I do possess one white handle version, I think the black handle is of slightly less quality than the white handle version but I don't think I could notice the difference! The downside is the pros do not come in the larger brush sizes, but Tamiya have this covered with the rest of their range.

One product I do use with brushes is this brush cleaning soap from Masters

Using acrylics you should use a synthetic bristle.  The brush shown looks like a natural (red sable?) bristle that tend to split and fray when used with acrylics.  Natural bristles are best used with oil based paints.

mischief reacted to Bob Cleek in White metal anchor corrosion on museum model
Without comment on whether the model (partially) in the photos is worthy of museum display, I'm surprised that a museum of Mystic Seaport's stature would display a model so obviously in need of conservation. Not only are the anchors corroding, but the copper bands on the stock are broken (perhaps by the expansion of the lead oxide beneath the stock halves,) but also there are rigging chains detached and hanging loose and staining on the base from apparent condensation. Not only have some copper plates come adrift, but the coppering and parts of the chains in the close-ups appears to have developed a green patina betraying that it has been stored in some time in an excessively humid environment.  Among curators, these are obvious problems that require prompt attention. Perhaps Mystic simply left it on display pending future-scheduled restoration.

If anyone is interested in what seems to be the "last word" on ship model lead corrosion, the USN NAVSEASYSCOM's research report is highly informative.  It can be found on line here: https://www.navsea.navy.mil/Home/Warfare-Centers/NSWC-Carderock/Resources/Curator-of-Navy-Ship-Models/Lead-Corrosion-in-Exhibition-Ship-Models/

I like your lacquer idea and I am not concerned by the fume issue.

My question is, once you have the finished coil what adhesive do you to glue it in place?  Is more Lacquer strong enough? I dislike using CA glues, and the PVA glues  are unlikely to stick to the lacquered surface.  The two sided tape seems messy and I have yet to find any that is dependable over a long time.

I made my own for $0.  This one will accommodate dowels up to 1-1/2" diameter (or square stock).  If you are working with larger diameters, add another piece of 3/4" plywood to the right angle fence for 3" diameter capacity.  Just be sure the 45 degree and right angles are correct

I use the Zona 37-240 Aluminum Thin Slot Miter Box. I like that the slots are thin so you don't get the play that I found with the X-Acto version. I stick a 1/4 thick piece of wood to the bottom with double-sided tape to avoid sawing into the metal.

The miter box from UMM that Kurt mentions is on my "to buy" list.

Walnut if not really a good choice. It tends to have an open, coarse grain pattern unsuitable for scale modeling. It can be brittle and difficult to manage in any case.

I would recommend you get some basswood sheets from the local hobby or craft store. They are inexpensive and the they cut easily. You can paint or stain basswood. Staining basswood requires a pre stain conditioner or sanding sealer to ensure that the wood will absorb stain evenly. Painting basswood is not a problem, although water based paints will raise the grain and require some sanding and several thin coats to get a good finish.

However, basswood will be a lot easier to deal with than walnut in my experience.
