Victory 357 Hawk Ekranoplan by RGL - Paused
Jack-in-the-Blue replied to RGL's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
An ekranoplan flying out of ground effect! Whatever next? It looks like a fun little project. -
There will always be ways to improve, that's what makes the modelling hobby so compelling. However, I can see nothing wrong with your work at all. To me it all looks excellent. I've enjoyed reading this build log today as well as admiring the boat. It has been very entertaining and helpful. Thank you.

Hmm. Nor do I. But assuming the price was reasonable, I strongly believe I’d have bought the thing myself if I had been in your place. 😂 It’s so easy for me to get carried away at shows. I think it will be an interesting project for you to do and for us to read about, so this is definitely one for me to follow. Good luck!

Hi from the Netherlands!

Welcome Erik. I look forward to seeing your Mikasa. -
I know exactly what you mean. It is definitely the most difficult model making process that I’ve ever done. However, your results are magnificent. Sure, there are a few cracks to fill at the bow, but compared to my first bluff bow, yours fits like a dance floor. I’m doing my second fully round bow right now, second planking, and I’m just beginning to understand and achieve the ‘geometry of the curved surface’. That’s something I wasn’t taught at school. Looking at your first plank layer here, I think you’re very close already. Remember, the thinner second layer is much easier to work with.

My cutter also has ten guns but having studied this post there’s a strong possibility that six or more have been taken ashore for routine maintenance. That’s fine work you are doing. I’m really looking forward to seeing your rigging.

For a moment there I thought you were getting into a Kobayashi Maru situation but reading through to the latest updates I see you have nailed it. Well OK, glued it. (I'll look for some of that thick and quick Titebond, sounds good.) She's looking really good now, nice steady work. well done! BTW I like best the updates where each photo brings out a few words. Too many photos without captions confuses me and too many words without pictures ... confuses me. Ha! I am a bear of very little brain.

‘Sharp’ is the word that comes to mind when I look at this model. You seem to be modelling in High Definition. It’s outstanding. Your photos are beautiful too.

I found this log two hours after you finished it. I’m sorry to have missed following it but on the other hand, I can now binge read the whole thing one evening. Judging from your latest post, the thread will repay close study. The model is magnificent!

What a fabulous project! The sound of the motors perhaps simulates the wheezing breath of the oarsmen. 😁

They look just right. Thanks for the detailed description of your process and the excellent photos. It’s been a very useful and timely tutorial for me, who has ten guns awaiting rigging right now. 👍

For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale
Jack-in-the-Blue replied to ccoyle's topic in New member Introductions
Well I’m glad that I wasn’t that silly. For my first build I chose the Vanguard Models Zulu which I built and was very pleased with despite having struggled with the new skills I had to learn. No, I wasn’t that kind of first time modeller. I was that kind of second time modeller! Excited by my success with the Zulu and suffused with as much enthusiasm as incompetence, my next purchase was the Victory Models Vanguard! It was as though I’d passed my test in a Vauxhall Viva and then on the way back from the test centre, bought an E-Type. Oops!😳 I had at least stuck with the same designer which made some sort of sense, but I quickly realised I was well out of my depth. Vanguard went into suspended animation while I built a few smaller, simpler, cheaper models and started to learn the trade. I’m still doing that and perhaps next year I’ll be ready for a 74 in 1/72 scale. Or maybe the year after… Maybe some of those over ambitious first time modellers who disappeared are also working away in embarrassed silence. I hope so because gradually overcoming my lack of skill, knowledge and experience is proving slightly more satisfying than frustrating, most of the time anyway. 🤣 -
I think a global catastrophe would be required to bust open that well-glued structure. That's ten out of ten for the foundations Mr Johnson. ✔️

It appears that the provision for the sliding keels makes the structure stronger rather than weaker, once built. You’ve made a good start to the build and the log. I like the lack of ‘waffle’ 😀

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
