1/200 Trumpeter IJN YAMATO - issued by MRC/Gallery Models
yvesvidal replied to yvesvidal's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Yes, I am not too sure about the quality of the wooden decks available on E-Bay: a few people have complained about the fitting. I would do some research before investing in anything. This French modeller, used a set by Vallejo to paint the deck: https://www.laroyale-modelisme.net/t32163-cuirasse-ijn-yamato-trumpeter-1-200-de-diablon Yves- 104 replies

RGL, would you mind elaborating on the techniques you used to finish the water, especially the wakes and foam? This is by far, one of the most realistic piece of ocean I have ever seen. Congratulations. Yves

It is really nice to see a more prototypical Nautilus being built, than the completely romanticized Disney Nautilus. When looking at the Gustave Dore drawings, the original Nautilus was very sleek and very similar to the model you are building. Yves

A quick update, as I have not had much time to work on this model, due to multiple side activities. I completed the chimney for the oven. All parts are made of copper tubes and aluminum tubes, soldered and glued together. The shape is inspired from the Anatomy of the Ship book. On the deck: Hmmm... after seeing these pictures, I think I need to paint it darker.... Yves

kit review 1:80 Endeavour – America’s Cup 1934 - Amati
yvesvidal replied to James H's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Amati offers this model in two different scales: 1/80 (as described) and 1/35. In my opinion, one is a little bit too small to appreciate the details and the exquisite shape of the hull and the other one is frankly speaking way too large for most display rooms. I wish they could still offer the one in 1/48th or 1/50 as it is called in Europe: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/amati-1700-85-endeavour-j-class--990605 Yves -

I was lucky enough to see about 6 of them flying in formation at Oshkosh,WI a few years ago. Quite a sight, in the air and on the ground. Yves -

That is a beautiful part. The galleries (toilet rooms) were by far the most difficult and challenging parts of the CAF kit of the HMS Bellona, that I put together. I wish I had something of that nature, 3D printed. You did a great job at creating these complex parts with your software. Yves

Funny how the words sound the same. In French, shrimp is a "crevette". Very close to the "Krevetka". Yves

I see that you ended up not installing the anchors on the ship. Your stand is beautiful and I love that blue color picturing the oceans. Yves

These scrappers are the best way to trim and carve a hull. I used these on my HMS Bellona and I could not have done the equivalent work with sanding paper. In the old days, modelers used a piece of broken glass as a scrapper. Now, we have these pre-shaped tools that are so much easier to use. Yves

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
