BLACK VIKING reacted to yamsterman in WASHINGTON GALLEY by yamsterman - 1/48 scale - POF
    HI ALL

FILLING TRANSOMS FITTED AND PARTIALLY FAIRED.

STERN TAFFRAIL FITTED....JUST SOME FILLING TIMBERS TO GO IN.

IT LOOKS LIKE I WAS A FRACTION SHORT WITH THE STARBOARD STERN FASHION PIECE.....SHOULDNT BE A PROBLEM AS THE PLANKING WILL EVENTUALLY COVER THIS INDISCRETION.

BASICS OF THE HULL ARE THEREFORE NEARLY DONE.

I WILL CUT THE MAIN SHEERLINE TO FINAL SIZE ONCE THE WALE STRAKES ARE ON.

    CHEERS FOR NOW........MICK

Lowering the deck and creating new frames:
The new frames are part frames, part "shape guides used to pad out the existing frames so that the hull matches the proper shape.
Paper station cutouts are used to check from the outside that the resulting shape is correct..

    Continuing adjusting the shape.
The lower hull in the stern according to the kit has no volume at all.
    Just a giant wooden blade.

Here you can see numerous problems with the fore deck.
It's too narrow (waterways fit outside of bulkheads)
    It's too short.
The fore mast is too far aft.

Planking progressing. The planks don't touch the original Corel bulkheads much.

    Nearly done.
What is pretty neat is that with the proper shape to the hull, the planks run really well from end to end without need for stealers or dropped planks.

Next to follow, Second layer planking.

    Cheers!
    Peter

Nice work - makes you wonder how the kit makers could get the shape so far off when they had the actual ship to measure from.

BLACK VIKING reacted to RedDawg in Sovereign of The Seas by SawdustDave - FINISHED
Hi Dave this is RedDawg. Quite a few years ago when I was into plastic, before I got converted to wood, I was a member of IPMS. When I entered my builds in the competition during the closed door judging I won a couple of awards. But when one of the judges found out that I was a long haired bearded biker, he pulled my awards and told me I didn't really win. It was just a mistake in where the awards were placed. Two of them. When one of the other judges caught on to what was going on he corrected things. And then told me it was my being a biker that caused the problem. I told them that it was just a part of the lifestyle I chose, and did not bother me any. Just another day of life. Michael By the way I am building the Sovereign myself and you scratch builds have changed the way I am going to do my build. So thanks to you scratch builders my skill level is growing.

BLACK VIKING reacted to MarisStella.hr in News and Info from MarisStella Ship Model Kits
Those are photos of the island of Brac , a very famous Croatian island… It is very important for Brazzera and this is why :

So, here is some basic informations about Brazzera …. ( I believe many of you would rather look the photos below than reading this part of the text, but I just need to write it here )

Bracera (Brazzera) is a Croatian sailing cargo ship, whose hull is between 15 and 17 meters long, which appears already in the sixteenth century as a logical result of the evolution of the ship round, navis rotunda, an old cargo ship. Even in the fifteenth century, some types of ships differed from the other ships of Brac in the Adriatic and brought the name of type and markings of Bracana. …In the sixteenth century there was next to the Adriatic bragagnu from Chioggia, the braganja Brac. At first our fishermen called it ćozota and the other was called brazzera by the Italian fishermen of Chioggia and Venice, from which of the name bracera today. Not always has the same features of construction and narrowly defined purpose and is not exactly defined as the most recent bracera from the eighteenth century. The term bracera is found in Kotor along up to the entire eastern Adriatic coast, across the lagoon of Venice to Ancona. The first written record of this ship on the Croatian Adriatic comes from Venetian sources, brazier, 1556 and the first Croatian sources we learn that bore a similar name, bracijera in 1878. year. There is no solid source of origin of its name. Researchers have come to different conclusions. Some of them thought that his name came from the island of Brac, where it would be born, while others named after the main propulsion system, or rowing, from brachium, braccio, the arm muscles. Others thought that it was named to the purpose of small sailing boats as the gallery, speronera, manzera etc.

Here, below, are some old photographs of Brazzera, so you can take a look at them :

    A little update.

I have measure the frames to see where the gun ports has to come....
    It was not that easy.
On one side I've done it 3 times before I was happy.
And fingers crossed that they are on the right place.
The only thing to find out is to open the gates with a drill, knife and file......

Thanks for the excellent photo's Mark. A visit to the museum is on my bucket list for sure.

Final comment.... Forget the awards thing guys. Seriously.... Still had a great time, met a lot of very nice new modeling friends from all parts of the country.
And, ABOVE ALL....I learned how to put on a world class event!

Which brings me to the next topic....
I will probably start a new thread for anyone interested in participating in another fund raising event next spring.
Last year's event raising money for "Wounded Warriors" was well worth a re-do. All participating modelers gave us excellent feedback.

Our next venue will be in Raleigh, N.C. and the beneficiary organization will be "Hope For Warriors".

Plans are to do a Friday / Saturday event .... Including a Sat. Evening Awards Dinner.
IPMS Modelers will be invited BUT..... There will be NO IPMS JUDGES!

    Thanks John....
Don't get me wrong my friend.... the MEMBERS were wonderful, and went a little nuts over my ships.  They truly appreciated the difference between out of box assembling plastic parts vs. scratch building a piece of art from raw material.
In fact, I cannot tell you how many of them came to me after the awards ceremony....very upset and expressing their embarrassment for the organization.

    Would I go again?
Yep....but would not register my ships for the competition.

The lanyards for the deadeyes on the fore topmast are now essentially done.  I will not finally tie them off for a few days to let every thing settle down. As well, some adjustments may be needed once the shrouds for the main and mizzen topmasts are done. While quite time-consuming, the process has gone smoothly.  The method described in my previous post has worked well, though in writing this of course, I'm asking for trouble.

Great to see my old mate Mr. Piet dropping in for a visit.  Wish you could join me on this one Pete....should be a real blast.

Took a few update shots this morning, with only four days to have her "more finished" for the road trip....

All channels have now been rigged with dead eyes and chains.... 56 of them.

All dead eyes have now been rigged with shrouds....
Note that the main mast top has been added.

Currently working on completing the three remaining tops.  Note - there are over 80 custom cut and shaped parts to these little tops.

One last bit of similar “detailing”-- added some small verticals to the bowsprit framing.
    Pics before update

And such luck!! Those left over necklace bits just sort of perfectly fit between the white trim pieces. Now that was a pleasant experience.

PS: I know that the cathead braces (anchors) are not even an approximation of what they should look like – but done here – moving forward. – I think?

Onto installing and attaching the lower main and its shrouds.

Don't know about the value but it looks like a nice kit.  If the wood has been stored in a heated space all this time the wood has probably dried out to the point of being brittle.  This may cause you some trouble when it comes time to cut and fit the pieces.  You could try re-hydrating it with warm water or using dilute white glue to soak the wood.  The glue will help to strengthen the wood and make it less likely to split.
