  1. Looking forward to another progress update on this Kevin, I’ve been patiently waiting.🍿 I’d like to build this very similar to how you are. You’re paving the way for others. JJ
  2. Looks good Ben, glad to see you building again. What wood are you working with? JJ
  3. Wow! Looks great Jack! What’s the progress look like on the other test builds?
  4. Good point Frank, perhaps just fair down to or below that line, install frames and then continue on fairing. At least then your hull is much more ridged.
  5. Wow those look great together! I certainly noticed the color of AYC and how close it resembles boxwood, but also how easily it can be worked.
  6. Impressive work Jack! Keep the updates coming! Can’t wait to get my hands on this.
  7. I think you could get away with adding the gun port framing prior to hull fairing to add some rigidity to the hull. You will have to fair all the frames anyway. I just held the hull in my lap with a towel when I faired it. I did not add the clips to the tops of the frames which I should have, but I made it fine without breaking one. It wasn’t until later in the build that i snapped one off. Just be careful and go slow.
  8. So are the basic parts a lower quality? Or they just require assembly? They are still precision cnc cut correct? Are you actually going to offer and ship pre assembled sections of the model in the kit?
  9. Thanks Rusty, Chuck and Matt for the comments and all likes. Chuck, thanks again for the wood! It worked perfect, I should get a very even finish for the rest of the deck now. Matt, all the coamings are down permanent. I spent a ton of time getting them all in line. It would definitely be easier to do the sanding with them off but I managed with a small army of sanding sticks! JJ
  10. definitely try and work on these techniques, I just recently picked up Chucks method and it’s changed ship modeling entirely for me. Results are wonderful. I painted my San Felipe so it didn’t matter but I wish I knew this then. https://modelshipworld.com/forum/98-planking-downloads-and-tutorials-and-videos/
  11. Looking great Jonathan. I built this thing about 20 years ago. There was no etched decks or planking then. It certainly presents well when completed! check out Chucks planking tutorials if you plan to do a second layer. If I remember they supply you with walnut. JJ
  12. I finished the center planking belt today. That was a real challenge, lots of potential for errors so taking lots of time is crucial! I must have test fit each of those outer planks about 50 times before finally gluing them down. I sanded them all down even and added wop. The remaining belts should go much smoother. JJ
  13. Thank you Ron and Rusty and for all the likes. Ron, I just used small copper wire for the nails/bolts and then filed them down to the size I wanted and then gave them a quick top sanding after I painted the hinges to expose them. They will slowly start oxidizing and turning brownish soon... especially in the salt air environment. I plan to track down the brass recommended for the hinges and start building them after I finish the deck. I just got a small load of beautiful 5/16 planking cedar in from Chuck so I can finish those complex wider planks now... probably today. JJ
  14. They look good to me! Now I’ll order 20 of them. How would you like payment?😂 JJ
