  1. I did a small purchase of various Winsor & Newton promarker. 

    I painted one dead eye ( Chucks) with 0523 Coffee stain.

    That will second from left, the other eyes are chucks but has been exposed to workshop weather for three years.

    Don't know if I should stay with the old ones or cover them as the other eyes will be attached.

    Another option is to with the peach.

  2. I went back to the material board and didn't like the outcome of the masts.

    The material was way too soft and started to warp very quickly, a trip to Home Depot for other items and I found oak dowels.

    This has so far proven to be much better and holding up to the shaping.

  3. I headed over to one of the local hardware store to get new dowels for the masts of Bluenose, I went with round dowels from start.

    I had to go through some 26 dowels to find myself 4 usable straight once. I placed them on the floor and if they could roll without any major effort they were fine.

    Sighting from one end to another didn't show any warp at all. 
    These dowels are larger than what plans says so there was a lot of sanding to get the proper shape.

    And yes, I put the dowel in my power drill and sanded it by hand. I use a leather glow that holds the sandpaper, this to avoid the heat build up from the turning.

    I am glad you got the Bluenose as a starter.

    Yes the dowels for the mast and booms are a disaster in the kit.

    Mine was badly warped as well - and today again - I went to my hardware store and got some straight dowels. This to start all over again with the masts.

     

    As for the Bluenose herself, I would suggest to get going with her before attacking the dories.

    This will give you the skills to handle the smaller and more delicate items in the kit.

  5. When the Bluenose II was built back in 1963, the family of the original Bluenose saw it was a direct copy of the original ship.

    This led to a lawsuit started in 2012.

     

    So it's not only our models that becomes victims of IP theft.

    The Bluenose II was built in 1963 by Oland Brewery for roughly C$300,000 as a marketing tool for their Schooner Lager beer brand. In 1979, ownership was transferred to the government of Nova Scotia.  In 1994–95 the ship’s hull was restored.  Around this time the management of the schooner got caught up in what the Canadian Sponsorship Scandal when the federal government allocated $2.3 million for the schooner through a consulting firm but only a small amount of the money reached the vessel.

    In July 2010, the Nova Scotia government awarded a $12.5 million contract for the restoration of Bluenose II to a consortium of three Nova Scotia shipyards. The total project budget was $14.4 million.  The word “restoration” is a something of a misnomer.  The original schooner was largely scrapped and the “restored” schooner was built from keel up with new materials. Some equipment and sections of the old schooner were retained, but the schooner is essentially a new vessel.

    The new Bluenose II was supposed to be sailing in the summer of 2012.  She was launched in 2013 and then hauled back ashore for additional work. The schooner is currently tied up at a wharf in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

    Recently, the provincial government settled a copyright infringement lawsuit with the family of the schooner’s original designer.   In 2012, the Roue family launched a lawsuit against the provincial government alleging that it infringed on their copyright by using William J. Roue’s drawings in the Bluenose II restoration.  The government settled the suit for $300,000, including legal fees. The provincial government says about $1 million has been spent on legal costs since the case was launched.

     

    I haven't found any records that the case is close, but considering the timeline I guess it has been closed.

    I'm a little disappointed that no one mentioned the - gasp - plastic Heller Victory.  It is hands down the most accurate kit of Victory on the market. At 1/100 it is a reasonable size for detail without taking up too much floor space, and there are seven sheets of brass etch available to enhance the build.  See the several build logs on the forum.

    Edit: Though I would add a shot of mine on the bench just after completion.

    And with Heller's HMS Victory there are a lot of aftermarket parts available.

    Like better cannons, wood deck etc.

    Look at this website.

    Once I am embarking the journey of building Revell's Constitution many items will be come from that place.
