  1. David, I did a little recon on the web and found that the plywood provided is a sheet made for underlayment between subfloor and top-finish. It has a coarser grain than what we are used to and chips easily, specially the thinner versions. Glad you got a reply from MS and getting you replacement parts.
  2. We others will be around awaiting an update whenever you have one.
  3. David, For a kit coming from MS, I am very surprised to the low quality. Makes me wonder if they contracted someone to keep up with the production. For the money spent on Syren I would expect much much better. Chuck must be furious seeing this. If I were in your shoes, I would have requested a completely new kit. I also have the Syren waiting, but I have had it in my stock for some time...... but it makes me wonder...
  4. Since I am not happy with the grating provided in the kit, I wondered what to do. Today I spent half an hour at my local "second hand shop", and found a sheet of veneer, to my surprise mahogany. It was thin to, so 50 cents later I had it in my hand and this came useful today. It's perfect for the grating and making strips out of. Sadly I don't have any mini table saw, so I used my Japanese fine saw and ripped the sheet. One picture shows the strip in the boat the other how it takes varnish. Sanding varnish - sanding varnish and many more times will make the wood luster. Edit: I am to experiment to make some plywood of this material and try making the steering wheel.
  5. Steve, I truly like what you have done to the Longboat. It's a lot of rigging line to coil for the right length of lines according to the plans.
  6. Mike, With that order of yours from Tippecanoe I am almost on the verge to de-friend you............. Just kidding, that T-50 will be the "Ultimate" racer..... Why didn't you order the Venom at the same time?
  7. Mike, I think there will be several trials before I have somewhat of a decent wheel. But yes, the included wheel is already out of the picture.
  8. Hamilton, That is so true....... And looking forward to the progress of your Bluenose.
  9. Another thing I will change and hopefully I will be able to this with a simple drill-lathe. The included wheel needs to much of work to make it look like one. Look at the included wheel and what I like to strive for. And the real thing. Then the current state of my simulated frames. Even though they will be covered up by the grating.
  10. Jhart65, May I suggest you start showing off your Wasa, you have a whole panel of members just waiting to see what you have built.
  11. The interior grating comes in two halves and when putting them together it looks awful. I am very tempted to make alteration to have it looking like one plank.
  12. Keith You are an inspiration of making small and intricate details. Now I wish I had a lathe and mill to do the same.
  13. Tor, A good morning to you..... This is something I think we all have experience from time to time with MS products..... the close shortness of one item or two. Hopefully you don't have to run out and getting replacement. Forgot to mention, send me a 3 1/2 as it is more than two years ago I had one.
  14. Gil, I just found the most comfortable chair and following along you build. You have come far with the built. And I like the varnishing you are doing. Considering the last ship, you are going to have this one done in a heart beat. Edit: Some extra history regarding this sailing class. The Dragon class was initiated by the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, who gave Norwegian yacht designer Johan Anker a brief for a cheap cruising/racing boat with about 20 square metres (220 sq ft) of sail area.[4] After the Second World War, the boat was considered slow, and genoa and spinnaker was introduced.[4] Since 2008 the Dragon is one of the Vintage Yachting Classes at the Vintage Yachting Games.
  15. I should have done this long before to get cleaner cuts as I dug out the cutter. This made each strip equal in length.
  16. En tre och en halva, jo jag tackar. Guys, this is the type of beer I miss so much over here in the US. They are full of flavor and low on the alcohol. So it is a good modeling beer. Edit, glad to see you back at the work table.
  17. MS paint dried up very quickly once a jar was opened. So I did a try with our food vacuum sealer, shh don't tell the admiral, Process: 1 - opened the jar - did some painting on a test piece of wood, that meaning returning the brush back to the jar. 2- closed the lid - only hand tight 3 - put the jar in a sealant bag, used the vacuum sealer 4 - had it sit for one week. 5 - open the bag and jar, not completely dry paint but much more dense. Couldn't get it diluted properly. Wonder if there is something of the chemistry of the paint that causes it..... I am not a chemist maybe someone else has an explanation.
  18. Mike, I think wooden ratlines is more accurate for this type of vessel. Looks better that way.
  19. Keith, very nice winches. How do make several of them looking the same? Are you using a transferring jig?
  20. Stupid question, and I hope there is an answer. But sending a DVD instead of plans, how do you get a correct measurement when needed?
  21. Puckotred, Very nice re-thinking of the instructions. The combo of "wood - water - drying " which equal shrink and gaps is something we all can relate to. Like the recovery you did.
