Haven 12 1/2' by pete48 - 1" = 1' Scale - Joel White version

Recommended Posts

Today,  after applying varnish to the Buzzards Bay 14, I concentrated on getting the rear deck beams installed and apply teak to the rear cockpit bulkhead. I started by laying out the access hole in the Bulkhead and then applied teak strips. While that was drying, I laid out the supports for the rear deck beams and installed them. I then installed the beams. I then trimmed the teak off the bulkhead and sanded it to 320 grit sandpaper. the bulkheads and center board box are dry fit. Here are the results

Today, With a high temperature of 28, ( about 0 C) and an impending snow storm, I decided I would get all the floor timbers installed. I started with Installing the Forward bulkhead, I then installed the Centerboard box, Once the centerboard box was installed, I used a template that I made to lay out the Floor timber lengths, I then measured and cut and installed all the Floor beams. I then turned my attention to making and installing the 2 blocks  at the front bulkhead, Everything to this point has been glued with Titebond 3. Next will be to install the rear cockpit bulkhead and seal up the bilge. Here are the results

Today, I started by installing the rear bulkhead, Next I finished the floor framing in the rear section, up to the rear bulkhead. I then ( before I got to carried away ) Made and installed the Mast Step. Next I made and installed all the door jambs, Followed by a coat of Titebond 3 in the bilge area. This will seal it up. Next will be to paint the bilge ( grey like I used on the Buzzards Bay 14 ) Here are the results

Today, I actually got a very early start, and a very simple task, I painted the Grey bilge coat ( it proved not to be as simple as one thought ) Next will be to work on the Cockpit seating, ( I have not decided whether to enclose them or leave them open like on the plans ) Here are the results

Thank You, John, Here is where I am at with No. 2  I have installed the Keel and am about ready to start planking, This one is going together a lot smoother than the first, the fine tuning of the molds and building jig have made a big difference and she's right on the money. Here are the results

Today, I decided that it would be better to get the Deck on, rather than finishing up the Cockpit. This way the Keel can be installed. I started by fairing the deck beams to the correct camber. I then cut out and installed the Deck. I then faired in the Deck with the Hull to 180 grit sandpaper. The boat will now be rigid enough to turn her upside down and install the Keel and Deadwood. Here are the results

Well, I procrastinated long enough, I knew that installing the Keel would be difficult, and it lived up to the billing. I started by lining up the Keel on the overturned hull, and marking the Hull as per plan. I used West System G-flex epoxy with 406 filler.( That went smoothly ) The tricky  Part was Installing the Deadwood. ( this took a few attempts and burned thru a bunch of wood ) Once the Deadwood was set, I epoxied them in and filled the seams. I will let her stand for a day or 2 and fair the Keel. Here are the results

Great build log! Since I just started following it, I have a question about an early entry. When you installed the floor timbers prior to beveling the frames to accept the keel (January 12th entry),  how did you securely attach them to the ribs without the floor timbers becoming stuck to the molds? Were the molds masked with tape? It seems to me that there wouldn't be much available gluing surface between the edges of the ribs and the floor timbers.

Current build: Schooner Mary Day (scratch)

Hi jdbondy, The Molds were beveled prior to the ribs being bent over them, It was tricky, the floor timbers were glued to the Keel, and outer edge of the Ribs ( Titebond 3 ) with a paint brush very thin to hold it in place, I went very slow and made sure not to get any glue on the molds, it worked out very well,  When I started planking the glue was also applied to the floor timbers
