Charles W Morgan by texxn5 - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64

Recommended Posts

Hi George, I plan to follow the paint scheme used on the real whaleboats. The interiors will be gray, and the outsides white with black rails and various colors for the stripe for identification as shown on the previous posts. Glad to hear about the Mill, you will enjoy it. I'll have to check on the part for you.

Added the remaining details to the boat. The first boat is now completed and ready for painting. Completed the painting and ID'd it as Orange. One down and four to go. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Adding all the little stuff was fun and really made it look like the real ones. I will finish all the boats to this stage before adding the accessories to make them ready to mount to the Morgan later.

Looking good John! I can't wait until I get to this point (prob in another 6 to 12 months!!!). I worked on the rudder today and will probably remake the sky light. I'll upload some pics to bring mine up to date. Take care. Ron

After 3 nine hour days or more, the boats are now completed to the stage of only needing to add the tools and accessories the boats carried with them. The structures are completed and painted.

Thanks to all that hit the like button and made comments. Greatly appreciated. Next I get to make a bunch of oars, harpoons and "whale stuff" to add to the boats. At least this stuff is now easy to make inside my RV....no more sawdust to contend with. The weather is changing and it's getting cooler...time to move south. Will be in Columbus, OH tonight.

John,

Amazing work. I like the way you built them, thanks for showing your method. Mini tutorial indeed. The boats already show some character and with tools will really shine.

I'm looking forward to seeing them fully fitted out.

Love the whaleboats - they are done up very similarly to the mayflowers, you did a great job with them.  Inspiring seeing them actually go together correctly (considering mine my wife lovingly referred to as the mayflowers giant peanut.. needless to say it is not on the ship =) ).

Went to see the Morgan this past week - it was an experience and adds a bunch as I read back through your adventure building it!

Fantastic work!

thanks to all who hit the like button and commented...much appreciated. Thanks Adam these guys were "tricky" to say the least. Fun little projects and fun to detail. I may have to wait a while for the harpoons and oars --- I forgot to bring my Byrne's Drawplate with me...not sure how I overlooked it but in the rush to leave it got left behind. So I'll probably go back to making the remaining yards (6 of them). I still have a few more details to do to the boats that I'll probably go ahead and finish though.

Adam, wasn't it cool to go aboard the Morgan? It's an experience every time I go aboard. Glad you enjoyed it and got to expeerience her. Look forward to you joining the Morgan Club.

Hello guys, I'm back in Texas.  I'll be working on updates shortly.  We have to go down to Mercedes, TX for some dental work, so I'm actually not really home yet.  Just a brief note, I received a backorder from Proxxon for extension beds for the DB 250 Wood Lathe.  I had many inquires for these and special ordered them from Germany and they arrived last week.  I'm offering these to my MSW friends on a first come first serve basis.  I had 5 available, but now have only 4 available since one has already sold.  Based on past interest I expect these to only last a few days, so if you need one please act quickly.  Check it out if you have an interest.  Here's the link.  More on the Morgan to follow shortly.

Well, I have returned home and re-opened the shipyard. So far, all I've been able to do is set up the Morgan on the workbench TV tray and set the whaleboats on the boat bearers to see how they look and take pictures. I'm waiting for a new drawplate that is larger than the Barnes to trim down the small dowels I have to a smaller diameter for the oars and harpoons. It should be in next week, then I'll start making the parts. The Barnes is too small a diameter for what I have. Here are the boats sitting on the boat. They are tilted too far outboard so that they won't fall off. The proper stance is to be attached to the blocks on the Davits and have a natural "hang" and then they are lashed to the Boat Bearers.

I have a question for all of the experienced members here......If you notice in the first picture above there is 1" scratch in the copper plating. It not only scratched but creased the copper plating. How can I fix this without destroying the finish and the patina of the copper. I accidentally hit the side with the pointed end of my diagonal cutters. Help!!!!

wow that sucks.. its really visiable too...when I do mine I will make a protective cover for the copper by putting clear wrap around the hull cut a box down to size so it is just above the copper and then spray in foam sealing .. it will expand and dry that way I have a cradle that will hold the ship up and also protect the hull from that sort of thing till it gets put in the display case... sorry I didn't think of this earlier for you...i'll draw it up and send it to you maybe you can post it for your followers... also when you make the harpoons use twigs of the right scale so they will look authentic. I believe that they used straight sapplings about 2 to 2-1/2 inch in diameter for the shafts...rig them up and you have a really good looking harpoon....

Hi Les, thanks for the input. Really sorry I couldn't hook up with you in Connecticut..maybe next time I can plan better. Yeah, I just did this scratch after all this time. I was looking at a tie off spot and reaching for the tool and then hit it....I couldn't believe it. I have a coat of clear satin varnish on it and that is why it's white looking. My concern is the dent or crease that goes along with it. I want to cover it up without it being obvious and shiny. I like your Avatar....looks good as well as fun. As for the oars, I have some small diameter bamboo dowels that are 2 mm in diameter. The largest hole in my Barnes Drawplate is 1.5 mm. I have ordered one that goes from 3.5-.2 mm. It should be here next week so then I can make proper scale sticks for everything. That cradle sounds interesting, please send it to me and I'll post it on my website.

Thanks Piet and George for the comments. It's good to be back after living in a 22' trailer for 6 months...we're thinking about upgrading to a 5th wheel soon.

Good to have you back John, hope you had a fabulous trip mate.

Morgan's looking really good with the boats on.

I'm afraid I cant help with the removal of the scratch mate other than remove the damaged ones and replace, that may change the patina though, as a suggestion would it be possible to have the boat above it lowered on it's davits so that the scratch is covered by the boat, just a thought.
