Very nice!, I hope someday to learn your style of subtle weathering. Could you explain what you used for the aged effect of the deck?

Unfortunately... As I like capstans of later style, I have to build a ship of this period. But I had decided to build next time - if it will be possible - Corel, Wappen von Hamburg.

She is very beautiful to me and the scale is 1:40 as Berlin.

These two as in the same ratio, they will be seen natural in respect of one another, I think...

First of all let me offer more praise for the exceptional work on your Berlin.  We must have similar tastes since I  am currently working on the WVH and have the Berlin on standby......If I ever get off my duff I'll re-introduce my WVH build log which disappeared with the great crash. I'm sure your version of the Hamburg will be just as or more spectacular than your efforts with the Berlin...Keep the updates coming... I'll need all the help I can get when I begin my version the Berlin.

I am thankful for your encouragement...

 

I glued the ropes to the deck with this cement. It is transparent, gets dry about 10-15 minutes, lets me manipulate, does not change the color of the robe, does not concrete the robe as CA, let the robe be flexible and is removed very easily after getting dry... Ideal for rigging... There is more than enough...

I use a solution of wood protector in walnut color, then flat varnishing.

Can I ask where you found the blocks for the rigging of the guns, and what size you used? Did they come with your kit?  My kit was a recent purchase and they are not included.  I will need to add them. I would also like to know the line used too if it is not too much to ask.

Something I apprciate seeing is the rope pulls for the port lids. It seems not many include this detail. I've enjoyed your build since I found it and it's one I always look for for updates.

You are right; the blocks for cannons are optional, the kit does not provide them, unfortunately. I have purchased them from Artesania Latina fittings, boxwood 3 mm. For the quarter deck's cannons which are smaller than the main deck's, I have sanded these blocks of 3mm to diminish down to 2 mm.

The thick rope is 1 mm in diameter, the rope through the blocks 0,5 mm. I have provided the ropes from Amati rigging lines. The kit calculates the ropes cm by cm...

Ferit, Im really starting to like the Berlin. I was looking at pics on the model and notice the inside of the bulwark is even. On the ships Ive seen from the period the bulwark have vertical timbers on the inside.

 

Were there diferent ways to do this when building ships back then?

So if I am understanding you correctly, you asked me why there are not vertical timbers over the planking inside of the bulwark. Unfortunately I am not competent about period ships. I suspected about my work after your post. But I follow the plans. And at the section "scratch build logs in progress" Model Mariner is building Berlin in the same manner, very clear especially in posts no 18 and 19. Then I calmed down. By the way thank you very much for your interest.

Matti,

Some ships (mostly warships) were planked on the inside of the weather deck bulwarks.  Some weren't.  There's no hard and fast rule on this.  The extra planking gave some protection to the deck crews from grapeshot, canister, and assorted small arms fire.

 

The Berlin seems to be one that had the planking.

personally, I'd think on a gun ship that the more wood between you and the enemy, the best. From my limited reading, it appears more sailors died of wood splinters and infection then the actual shot its self.

Plus the finished inner bulwarks look better.
