BobG,

Thanks for the kind remarks.  Cape May is not so frigid this year,  no snow or cold snaps this year,  I live about 30 miles north west and go down a few times every year.

All the Best

BobW

It was icy and frigid when I went through the Coast Guard 9 week boot camp there in January and February of 1966. I think climate change has turned the weather upside down just about everywhere anymore. I'm looking forward to see you continue with the rigging as I'm at that point now and don't really know what I'm doing.

I was just looking over your build log again, Bob. Your metal work and sail making is exceptional. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this beautiful build.

Part 15

I know it's been some time since the last update.  The Main Sail has given me trouble but,  I have it lashed up and set.  This one is the second version, and it does have a couple of 'pin' holes.

This is a shot of the Bolt Rope being attached to the with Fluid Matte Medium that is cut 50/50 with IPA.

The tape used is Drafting Tape from Walmart,  it does not stick very hard to the Slikspan sail.

This shows the Bolt Rope attached and the Reef Points mounted.  A over hand knot is used and then each has a small drop of the Matte Medium applied to secure it.

Here is the Main Sail set.  I just have been unable to remove some wrinkles.

A slightly different view.  The Shrouds and the Fore Stay will be up next.

The top of the mast. I have changed some of the rigging with the sails mounted.  The tackle for the boom lift should handle the weight of the sail.

More to come.

It looks really good, Bob. You've got a special build going here. I think it's the first one in this group build that has sails. I've been toying with the idea of it might look like with furled sails? I'm hesitant to attempt sails at this point though for fear that I would just muck up what already looks pretty nice to me.

I look forward to see your progress with the sails.

I have added two belaying pins.  One forward for the Jib Outhaul.  Another just in front of the mast for the Gaff Boom Halyard.

There is much to do inside.  Including Coils, Grapple, Shrouds, and Oars.

If the boom sheet is under the tiller, wouldn't that get in the way of trying to change course ? I've sailed dingies and the boom sheet was always before the  tiller.

She looks fantastic with sails, Bob!

Thanks also for the research you did to get the sails and rigging historically correct. I would have to change a lot of my rigging and move the backstays forward but you've given me something to think about. It still doesn't make sense to me that the main sheet can be located so far aft that it interferes with the tiller but Chuck assured me that that is historically accurate and your diagram shows that as well.

I asked Chuck the very same question some time ago and he said that it is historically accurate and that seems to be confirmed from the diagram that BobW has in his post. I know that it doesn't seem logical but I guess that's the way it was. I'm not sure why they would have done it that way though...?? 🤔

Thanks everyone for the 'Likes'.

Greg,  My daughter is much improved,  I speak with Her quite often.  She is toughing this covid-19 alone in Her Townhouse.  The youngest son is with His father,  because He's afraid of transmittance,  since he was up at Rutgers.  He was just starting spring break when the lock down hit.   And the oldest is in Pa. working for Comcast from home.

BobG,  My guess is they slacked off the sheet to move it around the Tiller when tacking.  I don't think this was a one man sailor.  Too much to handle alone.

Thanks

I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter contracted Covid-19 and I hope she will recover quickly. New Jersey and New York have been hit so hard. I hope you and your family and friends stay safe and well.

Eric, thanks for Your thoughts.

BobG,  my daughter dose not have Covid-19.  She had heart damage from radiation treatment for Hodgkin's when she was 16.  Had to have a aortic valve replaced with a metal one in September.  She spent 60 days in U of Penn because of complications.  Then she had a stomach bleed which meant another week in hospital.  It's been a long haul.

Sorry, Bob, I misunderstood your post about her "toughening out the Covid-19 by herself."  She's been through a lot and I hope she is able to stay safe and well during this terrible pandemic.

Part 17

I've pretty much finished with the rigging.  Here are a few shots of my progress.  Next up,  the base board.

The flag.  I decided to make a 'Admiral of the White' Flag just to have a different look.  I made it a little long on the heel side to wrap around the toggle line I made.  This starboard side is not a good view,  but the toggle can be seen on the vacant halyard.

Stern view.  The figure is from a 1:20.3 scale railroad maker,  I know he is a little oversized.  Looks good anyway.

Finished

It's been some time since the last update.  I have had a very busy summer with storms and then doctor visits.  Below are the final photos showing the oars, boat hook and the base.

Bob, what a splendid effort, your longboat looks triff.

I'm getting a bit jaded with the same old longboats, but I'm impressed with yours.

The helmsman figure gives scale to the whole thing and leaving him white is a good way of emphasising the idea of scale without detracting from the model.

Not that I know how to sail a boat, but I imagine the rig you have chosen would be too much for one man.

Two similar ship mates wouldn't be over doing things.
