Update

 

today I concentrated on the over night catch, Ì`m still looking for some eels in scale 1:24. Made the masts and main gaff,as well as mizzen boom

I used a thick viscosity primer both sides to get some "flesh" onto the flat etched fish....

 

and turned them into Hering, plaice and cods. Am still looking out for some eels in scale 1:24

The fish boxes are also from etched brass sheet

 

the plaice remain white on the bottom side

 

the mizzen mast can be layed down, when the shrouds are released

 

 

 

The mizzen boom is hooked in for easy removal

The main mast upper gaff is equiped with with a glide shoe, in order to slide up an down the main mast

Probably not ... they ate boiled potatoes on those boats - a chip-pan would have been far too dangerous (it is the major domestic fire hazards in British houses to have a pan with boiling oil on a gas cooker 😱).

 

I think it was an anecdote recounted by Wolfgang Rudolph in one of his books on the boats from the Pommeranian coast: A guy was taking a passage on a fishing boat (probably late 19th century) and the fisherman offered him a meal during the trip. As the guy did not come from the coast, he tried to be modest and ate mainly from the potatoes - whereupon the fisherman reprimanded him: "Mate eat fish, potatoes are expensive!".

 

The kitchen utensils on these boats typically consisted of a frying pan (for the fish and perhaps some bacon), a pot for boiling potatoes, and a kettle to boil water for coffee.

Veggies are for softies and women ... and they were expensive. The fishing trips would have lasted only a day or two, depending on success and weather conditions.

Update

 

For the deck I had removed the intended pine planking again, changed the pattern arrangement and now mounted a new planking in straight larch wood, planks 4 x 0,8 mm. It went faster than I had thought

This looks OK in my opinion and gives a good contrast with the beech wood comings

The main mast with gaff and spars and the mizzen mast with boom and spars is also done, but yet without the rigging blocks that are on order

the first rough sanding is done.  The outcut on the front deck is for sight acess to the storage compartment and the anchor chain

 

 

 

The brass anchors at the deckside shall be for mounting the footrail, the dark stained anchors are for taking up the shrouds

Now that the deck finaly is complete it gave me confidence again, to build on with the model. Yes I`m proud of the little tuc-tuc engine, a pitty that it will never run...

now the semi round nutwood outer deck rails are mounted, and also the beech foot rails attached to the anchors. The larger and smaller deadeye are ready for rigging the masts. The deadeye fastening screws are still to be shortend a bit. The bow sprit spar has to be made fastend to the deck and rigged. The poles for bringing out the Zeesen network (Fishing gear) will be made later on

made the bow sprit, the two traveller rails, some fittings for fastening the sails, and the extendable poles of the fishing gear. It looks like all is ready for the sails to be sewn.

The plaice are in one box and hering and cod in the other. I intended to apply Syren blocks for rigging, but the postage costs to germany are too expensive, so I found a source in Germany selling Master Korabel blocks, which are also good in quality.

Your miniature plaice reminded me of a funny story. In the US, there is a somewhat bemusing process for assigning allowable market names to different fish species. Surprisingly, only a very few names are spelled out in law. In my homeland of Northern California (i.e. around Eureka, NOT San Francisco, which we referred to as "Southern California"), fishermen once referred to a certain species of flounder (Microstomus pacificus) as the slime fish or slime sole, for self-evident reasons, and it was not considered a prime food fish, unlike Dover sole (Solea solea). Somewhere along the way, some enterprising seafood company got the idea to market slime sole as "Pacific Dover sole" to make the less palatable fish more attractive to consumers. The name is still allowed today by law because it is considered "a name that has been recognized nationally in the U.S. and commonly used by consumers to identify a species" according to the guidelines published by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. So, remember that all of you West Coast members whenever you see "Dover sole" on the menu of your local seafood joint!

It's been a while since I've visited your build Nils, and boy this model is coming along and looking great!  Love that engine!  I remember back a year or so when you constructed it, and I wrote into my notes your use of a wristwatch cover sealing O-ring for the belt - such a clever and resourceful idea.  Nice looking fish too.

today I sewed the pillows for the two berths and made an accessladder from the work cockpit to the deck, and belaying pins for the main sails

I`m admiring your rigging and sailmaking of the Germania schooner, its a real masterpiece of maritime modeling, in museum quality.

Mine is just a workboat and therefore the rigging, sails, etc will be a bit easier. I am just preparing for the sails patterns. the red and brown cotton sail cloth are already here.

For the sail fastening to mast and spars I bought some mini 1,5mm eyelets and the appropriate tools for setting them. The copy shop promissed me that there is no problem in printing the white color reg. # to the red mainsail.

The model shall bear a revival reg.# of an actual Zeesboat that was layed up and broken down many decades ago, so there will be no interfierence with the reg.# of momentary actual craft and / their owners.

the duck seams are at 24" for the 5 sails

here red/brown cooton sail cloth, the small eyelets, tools for setting. At the point of the needle is a sample of a mounted eylet with ID 1,5mm, OD 3,5mm

 

the scetch is showing the intended sail lashing to the mainmast. I still remember this from the rigging of my actual "Cornish Cormorant" sail dinghi with brown gaff sail, many years ago.

Update

 

I have started with the sails. The flyer and the mainsail are intended to be red, the other 3 (already sewn sails) are brown.

The red sail cloth is too thin and wrinkels under the sewing machine foot, so I`m giving it a second try with either diluted PVA or with laundry starch in the appropriate places

The FZ 53 identification # on the red main sail was printed by my local copy shop, in the same quality as the 5 Elbe sail # recently.

Allthough I had sewn many sails this way to date, I had a problem in getting the 1 mm thick bolt rope to alline properly under the zick zag stich this time. Thankfully my wife gave me a good suggestion how to fix that, and it works well. The foot devices for the machine are of great help and I could`nt do without them.

for anyone that should be interested in the way I make the sails, here a few pics of todays work......

this was what helped me in dealing with the bolt rope being mounted under the zig-zack stich (using a darning needle, a tip from my wife, and it works very well)

 

the rather thin red cotton cloth was reinforced with starch in the sewing area. After bringing on a clean zick-zag along the edges it was easy to place the bolt rope correctly in center alignment

 

the small sail fastening loops need to be made at this stage

 

after folding the sail edge 180° the bolt rope comes to lay at the outer sail edge

 

The registration #,  FZ for Fischerei Zeesboot.  The actual boat bearing this registration was layed up, broken down scrapped many years ago

 

The large main sail is equipped with mini eyelets for lashing to the mast and to the gaff. Also the reefing strops are brought on

 

Fisherman senior is refueling the 20 Liter day-tank under the engine bonet, as both men are bringing her over to the yard, under machine, some miles away, for further rigging and fitting out

Actually, Niels, that's a clever idea to sew on the bolt-rope flat and then to turn over the seam! That strategy could also be used for hand-sewing.

 

To prevent thin fabric from pulling out of shape during machine-sewing, in the past, I glue the fabric on a piece of thin silk-paper, then sewing through it. Afterwards, it could be ripped out without leaving traces.

 

Unfortunately, I will not be able to test your idea in practice, as at the scale I chose to work in, fabric is not suitable for sails.

Keith, the idea with the day-tank (refueling) came to me when making the engine bonnet.

 

Eberhard, that tip with backing up paper also came from my wife, I tried it, but had problems in ripping the paper off afterwards. I`ll rather stick to the starch reinforcing method

the rigging is done, the sails all set. I now need to clean up the rope ends in coils and do the fitting out.

The finishing line is already in sight. My wife and I shall have a weeks vacation at the Baltic sea from 4th Oct. on

the standing and running rigging is all in Polyester rope in different sizes

 

 

 

the cabin upper part is removeable, the anchor chain is made from chemically blackened brass

 

 

 

all the blocks are from Master Korabel
