Peter, as you say, brilliantly executed! Very nice job on the planking.

Thanks Bossman.

Nah, I'm too stubbern to leave it. I'm not happy with the staining attempts on the sample yet, but last night I pencil marked one side of the hull in preparation for the drilling. There is no way back now....lol

Just started viewing this build. Beautiful work. I will watching your build and hope to learn good practices for my own build, whenever I feel ready to start! I love the dremel support idea, water bottle counterweight and all!

are you drilling through or just deep enough to be filled in for appearance?

Hi Voyageur.

I'm drilling just a few mm so it can be filled with wood filler and sanded down after.

Just a few more photo's to keep the log ticking along.

I'm working on 2 fronts now. One is drilling the holes for the tree nails and when the Dremel battery needs re-charging (or my hands need a rest...lol) I have started planking the second belt.

The holes for the tree nails have all been drilled. I decided to get the planking done first before filling the holes with wood filler (not looking forward to that one...lol).

Just a few photo's to show the gap getting smaller, 11 more rows to go.

Time for another update. Thanks for the likes everyone, they are certainly appreciated.

Planking the hull is finished and the treenails have been added as well. I decided to not paint the planks below the wales white but to just coat them with a sanding sealer and clear varnish. With the stain I used above the wales there is enough colour contrast. The stain didn't give a uniform finish as I feared but it is what it is. I don't think its too bad and the busier it gets in thore areas the less noticable it becomes.

Next stage will be the Stern and quarter galleries. Fingers crossed on that one.

I made a start on the stern and quarter galleries. Not a lot of progress but I believe just enough to warrant a few photo's. Got to keep the log ticking over....lol

Another update on the progress on the stern. The next step will be fairing the inside of the hull to a maximum of 5/32" which I started with using the Dremel. I'm a bit nervous of this step in the build so I plan to take it very easy. A good time for some photo's up to this point.

I have been happily creating saw dust by reducing the inboard sides of the hull. When I took the following photo's I thought it was pretty much done but while editing them and checking Chuck's manual again I realized I still have a little bit more to do, Especially a bit more thinning out is required at the deck level.....sigh...

Still I think it's OK to show the photo's, so here they are....

Your Confederacy looks great Peter, I have enjoyed following your build. I am awaiting photos of your final sanding thickness of the inner bulwarks. Comparing what you have already done to my more or less untouched ones,it looks like I better stock up on sandpaper.

Thanks John,

Yep, you will need plenty of sandpaper. Its tedious work, the thinner the bulwalks get the less pressure you want to apply, the less you take off. It's the old "the final 10% takes 90% of your time. I find it difficult at times to judge when enough is enough.

I have a loyal black Labrador always laying down at my feet in front of the worbench. If I stand there sanding for too long he slowly seems to change colour....

I took a break from sanding a bit and did some work on the stern. I added the cap rails and the first shell layer that closes the galleries. I decided to bend my own cap rails and not use the laser cut parts. I wasn't sure the staining of the laser cut parts would be consistent and bending them didn't cause any problems.

I do believe that earlier in the build I might have made some mistakes as the shells supplied in the kit weren't even close to the area's they needed to cover. To get a start on how to start shaping the shells, I made some dummy cardboard shells first and added the windows at the most visually logical position and used this assembly to shape the wooden one. The photo's will show what I mean. Maybe this way I'll get away with it. Definitely a challenging part of the build...

Just plodding along here...lol

Here are some photo's.

To start off, thanks for the likes everyone.

I must honestly admit that this has been a bit of a scary part of the built with lots of (luckily small) breakages and creative ways to "clamp" bits together. In a lot of cases my fingers were the 'clamp' where I patiently listened to songs on the radio hoping my fingers wouldn't cramp up. I also started using superglue and PVA glue together. Superglue for the instant 'grab' and PVA for the added strength. Considering all that, I am happy with where I am at the moment. Not perfect, but not too bad either...

Here are some photo's....(which have been loaded in reverse order.....)

Well, first a big thanks for the compliments and the likes.

I have completed Chapter 7, the Stern and quarter galleries. Like most I struggled with finding the right color for the castings and photo etched details. Please don't ask how I got to the color I used. I mixed that much that often, I wouldn't have a clue. In the end I just settled with what I got and hoped for the best.

I have attached some photo's. A few to show how I added a small "spacer strip" to help align the letters CONFEDERACY and a few how I raised the back of the model so I could better align the castings (I didn't like to do that upside down). And a few of the final stages. I used "Micro Kristal Klear" to create the windows.
