Peter Bloemendaal Posted May 4, 2020 Author Share #37 Posted May 4, 2020 Time for another update. Thanks for the likes everyone, they are certainly appreciated. Planking the hull is finished and the treenails have been added as well. I decided to not paint the planks below the wales white but to just coat them with a sanding sealer and clear varnish. With the stain I used above the wales there is enough colour contrast. The stain didn't give a uniform finish as I feared but it is what it is. I don't think its too bad and the busier it gets in thore areas the less noticable it becomes. Next stage will be the Stern and quarter galleries. Fingers crossed on that one. The next step will be fairing the inside of the hull to a maximum of 5/32" which I started with using the Dremel. I'm a bit nervous of this step in the build so I plan to take it very easy. When I took the following photo's I thought it was pretty much done but while editing them and checking Chuck's manual again I realized I still have a little bit more to do, Especially a bit more thinning out is required at the deck level.....sigh... Its tedious work, the thinner the bulwalks get the less pressure you want to apply, the less you take off. It's the old "the final 10% takes 90% of your time. I find it difficult at times to judge when enough is enough. I have a loyal black Labrador always laying down at my feet in front of the worbench. If I stand there sanding for too long he slowly seems to change colour.... Peter. Peter Bloemendaal Posted June 21, 2020 Author Share #51 Posted June 21, 2020 I took a break from sanding a bit and did some work on the stern. I added the cap rails and the first shell layer that closes the galleries. I decided to bend my own cap rails and not use the laser cut parts. I wasn't sure the staining of the laser cut parts would be consistent and bending them didn't cause any problems. I do believe that earlier in the build I might have made some mistakes as the shells supplied in the kit weren't even close to the area's they needed to cover. To get a start on how to start shaping the shells, I made some dummy cardboard shells first and added the windows at the most visually logical position and used this assembly to shape the wooden one. The photo's will show what I mean. Maybe this way I'll get away with it. Definitely a challenging part of the build... I must honestly admit that this has been a bit of a scary part of the built with lots of (luckily small) breakages and creative ways to "clamp" bits together. In a lot of cases my fingers were the 'clamp' where I patiently listened to songs on the radio hoping my fingers wouldn't cramp up. I also started using superglue and PVA glue together. Superglue for the instant 'grab' and PVA for the added strength. Considering all that, I am happy with where I am at the moment. Not perfect, but not too bad either... Like most I struggled with finding the right color for the castings and photo etched details. Please don't ask how I got to the color I used. I mixed that much that often, I wouldn't have a clue. In the end I just settled with what I got and hoped for the best. I have attached some photo's. A few to show how I added a small "spacer strip" to help align the letters CONFEDERACY and a few how I raised the back of the model so I could better align the castings (I didn't like to do that upside down). And a few of the final stages. I used "Micro Kristal Klear" to create the windows.
