Hello everyone.

I'm starting build log of bracera (brazzera) traditional croatian coastal vessel.

Scale is 1:20 and plans are from 1981 - Tehnodidakta, Pula.

It's pretty simple vessel and maybe ideal for beginners as I am :D

I don't know how fast will be this build because my table saw proxxon is broken and it's on service-reconstruction almost for about 5 month. I use all blocks and strips of wood and improvise as much as i can till i get my saw. I can't make a planks for hull, deck etc...

Wood i will use is domestic pear and cherry.

Thank you all  and suggestions, comments etc. are welcome.

That's combination of pear and wood. I used only flax oil. I think it will be nice combination - not to big contrast.

Hello Elmir,

Thank you for starting your buildlog. She is a beautiful vessel.

From what I can see in the drawing, is that a sprit sail?

As for your table saw, that is a very long time to be in service-reconstruction.

Just take your time and enjoy the build.

Good luck with your build. Looking forward to your progress.

Hello, Elmir.  Very nice workmanship so far - hope you get your saw back soon so you can show the next stages.  What you have so far is very nice to look at!

Thank you Wayne for kind words.

Thank you Anja also. About sprit sail - i'm not expert ? Really don't know. I assume that you are right.

About proxxon, thing is that my little proxxon table saw is older version and it use a small rubber belt which is expensive and not easy to find. I decided to ask my friend which is engineer to reconstruct saw to work without that belt. But he had his own company, also fabricate a guitars (fender licence) etc. I have to wait :D

That does appear to be a sprit sail rig - the following is from Wikipedia (they do so much better at paraphrasing the more extensive verbiage in other reference books):

The spritsail is a form of three or four-sided, fore-aft sail and its rig. Unlike the gaff where the head hangs from a spar along its edge, this rig supports the leech of the sail by means of a spar or spars named a sprit. The forward end of the sprit spar is attached to the mast but bisects the face of the sail, with the after end of the sprit spar attaching to the peak and/or the clew of the sail. It is said to be the ancestor from which the common gaff rig evolved in 16th-century Holland.

Nice build, :) but I feel I must chime in on the rig, it is, in fact, a lug rig. Notice how the gaff runs along the head of the sail, as opposed to at an angle to the peak, like the sprit.

Hello Elmir,

Don't worry, I'm no expert on sails either.

I found this article on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracera

It shows pictures of the sails used on the different types of Bracera's.

I'm sorry Wayne, but I think Andy is right.

Take care,

So we can agree Elmir's bracera is the lug rigged single mast bracera. :)

Although ship isn't finished a cargo certainly is :DD

My friend cut planks for me so i started with planking.

Good news is that I'm going tomorrow to get my saw :D and after so much time she gets only minor improvement so I'm not sure how she will work.

In meantime i made some cargo :) hope it will not sink her :D

Hello Elmir,

Nice cargo and ready to be loaded.

It is small cargo, so she won't sink.

Good to hear you will have your saw back tomorrow. Good luck trying it out.

Hello Elmir,

Hull planking is finished and looking good.

I'm glad your saw works well.

I have never seen this preparations for the deck planking before.

But when you are done sanding, you will have a nice smooth surface for the planks.
