Actually, I had another image that is not on my phone.  It was a side shot of the clansman from mystics original mounted collection.   I have it somewhere ……just didn’t place his left arm correctly and his head isn’t aiming back far enough.

Rob

Rob, one consistent feature I've seen with ship's figureheads is that the subject's head is tilted in such a way that their face is looking straight out. Invariably when a figure is mounted at a sharp angle, this put their head at a tilted back position too.

Oh...that is normal.  Looking, reaching...always forward and upward.

Sometimes when you are on your third try at 7/8", when the human figure is the hardest to replicate....you just settle with what you end up with.

However, hindsight, we wish we had paid greater attention...but at the time, exhaustion and frustration wins out.

Rob, while you see the flaws, what others like myself see is the single finest miniature replica under an inch, of Glory's Grecian Goddess Athene figurehead ever done. Even the great McNarry sculpture is much larger being around six inches tall.

The rigging, especially the associated iron-work on the spars is top-notch Rob.  Looks great.

Thanks Michael and Pat.   I appreciate the compliment greatly.    This scale allows me just enough size for ample detail but small enough to permit me freedom from the kind of details larger scales demand.

Thank so much.

Rich yep I agree. Robs working around bowsprit and rigging at whole is better guidance than any book for me. as far as Figurehead goes, that Boxwood sculpture is beautifull indeed but i do find there one substantial anatomical flaw that doesnt do it for me. Men like proportion between waist and top of bac kand shoulders.  no women in world have triange or men proportion - broader shoulders quite opposite exactly same. its my another hobby to paint portraits, i noticed thst immediately. Robs figurehead is closer to original and for me wins in that conparison . no matter detail, when a atomy is destryed nothing would save it. not trying to undermine it it. it is glorious work of a master that i admire in any other respect. ...

Rob, the addition of the Bowsprit spreader really is a fascinating anachronistic device. As usual you've done a beautiful job on the inclusion of this unique spar. I'm far more used to seeing such original spritsail mounts in 18th Century warships. Then those were mounted below the Jibboom in order to allow mounting a sail. Being set up on top, clearly there was no intent to mount a sail. As it apparently wasn't originally installed at her launch, this spar like the many other ingenious deck revisions was most likely a result of Captain Nickerson's work.

Rob,

She has wonderful clean lines and it is so obvious without her masts at this stage.

I have been admiring your boat covers, (I have been admiring everything) but specifically, I have been looking at the boat covers as mine are rubbish in comparison. Are these silkspan?

Simon

No.....Actually it is another of my modeling hacks.  First I used stainless steel wire(any good extremely stiff wire will do, and glued a length from stem to stern of the boat to create the peek for the cover.  Typically this was a run of rope or a specifically made pole and the canvas was laid over that. (Creating a peek so rain water would roll off like a roof)  I then ran masking tape right along the wire and formed one side of the canvas.  Cleaning the edges and forming them correctly.  Then I ran the other half of tape joining the other side at the centerline.  Again pressing  against the edge or gunnal of the boat to press the tape down snugly.  Once finished and trimmed up nicely the canvas was painted grey.  I used epoxy paint because it seals the tape down nicely.  Any good paint will seal the tape down and to itself  I'm sure.  I used plain masking tape because it retains a nice micro dimpled appearance of real canvas.

Then I added the draw ties along the canvas edge and weathered the entire arrangement.

I've used this technique on nearly all my models for over 40 years and I have seen no failures of the tape method.  Paint covers a multitude of sins.

Beautiful job on Glory!!  I understand from Nic at Blue Jacket that you are also a DDS/DMD

Thanks Rick.  Actually I’m retired ……but I was a DDN.   A Denturist.   Kinda like a prosthodontist, but my specialty was removable and maxiofacial prosthetics.

Now I’m just a humble procurer of clipper ship relics.

George,  being the general modeling hack that I am, over the 40 years of my collecting kits , I have accumulated thousand of blocks from various models such as Cutty Sark,  Connie, Alabama, Corsage,……you name it

I modify their blocks for my own purposes.  Each one may get restropped,  painted , bracketed and hooked or looped to make them suitable.

As is my habit, I will reuse any part or combinations of parts of previously engineered items for my purposes.

It is the end result that matters, NOT, how I got there.

Thanks for asking.

Rob,

I’ve been collecting nautical antiques for the last 30+ years. Moved to Maine a little over two years ago from Cleveland. Congratulations on being retired I’m supposed to be hopefully soon as practice is interfering too much with my modeling.!!!
