We have a major training facility here for the SkyCranes (CH-54) used for firefighting and they do heavy lift work also.   They still look strange to me.. since they are -53 but without the fuselage.  Like a giant spider flying through the air.

Evening all,  no progress with the wokka today  as this afternoon  a more pressing urgency  was at hand  - out yorkie  has been constantly licking her back foot for a couple of days  - we checked but could not see anything, but today it was really swollen  so we wrang our vets who gave us an apointment  for this evening,  cut a long story short I carried her there and  because of covid  we wore masks  and the vet came outside asked the problem then took our pooch  off us and inside the vets.

About Half an hour later they came outside to us and she told us it was because of our dog constantly licking it that caused the swelling  - she was given a couple of injections  - anti-biotic and something else and we then came home.

She is fine in herself  can walk on all fours  but constant liking  - hard to stop a dog from doing that and one of those dog cones are not really ideal although we were given one.

So - an evenful day.

Yep, Erickson aircrane owns the type cert now and has the m'fger rights for them as well, and before they could fly them or make parts for them, they had to bring them up to FAA standards and get approval... (the military doesn't need FAA type approval for their aircraft, only civilian aircraft do) They aren't the same CH-54 Tarhe's the Army flew anymore.... Entirely upgraded different aircraft....

I want to join Ken in wishing you and your pooch well, OC.  Hopefully today isn't quite so eventful.

The CH-54 is one of my favorite helicopters.  You guys may be familiar with this already, and I believe it still stands, but its a CH-54 in 1968 that holds the record for fastest climb to 30,000.

"On 30 December 1968, Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) James P. Ervin and CWO William T. Lamb climbed to over 30,000 feet in their CH-54A. The two Skycrane pilots, using a standard CH-54A with the hoist and four-point system removed, broke the previous altitude records held by the Soviet Union. Ervin flew the aircraft straight up with vertical speeds exceeding 6,500 feet per minute with zero forward speed until 20,000 feet. When the Skycrane passed through 30,000 feet, it was still climbing at 995 feet per minute. The flight had to be terminated because of darkness and the absolute record for the Skycrane will never be known.

During the record flight, air traffic control (ATC) tapes were notably affected. One ATC controller notified a commercial airliner flying at 17,000 feet about traffic stating, "be advised there's a helicopter at your 9 o'clock position descending outof 27,000 feet at a rate of 4,000 feet per minute." The pilot of the commercial airliner responded with, "Good Lord, you mean they're up here now?" Another pilot according to ATC tapes asked, "What kind of helicopter is that?"

OC, the bird is looking good and I'm so happy to hear the pupper is being well taken care of.  Those little guys seem to get knocked out a bit by almost any med.

Thanks for setting me straight on the -54 Egilman.  I wasn't aware of them being "different" than the military version

CW_Tom,   I wasn't aware of that record.  Somehow it doesn't surprise me that it could do that.

I suppose on their own they were effective, but they were pretty much a stopgap between the Army realizing a need for a dedicated Gunship to escort the air assault Hueys, and the development and arrival of the Cobra. (Which, by the way, is the only US Army helicopter not named after a North American Native tribe. Fun fact.)

Evening all  - next on my build was a stage that I thought was going to be difficult  - the engine covers, these little beauties  have little mesh screens fitted into them  - this is done (in principle)  by using a paper template and cutting the mash to fit then glueing them into the gaps  -  "No Way"  was this going to happen  - as we know mesh is akward when trying to cut through the threads, so  my idea and plan was to fit them each in Two sections inside the covers using the glue to hold them in place.

So about Two hours later  I have created Two engine covers  - and glued in place.

Nice work on the screens OC. I find it interesting that the MFG made nice screens for the intakes but just behind them are two more screens that have just molded detail. Maybe it won't be so noticeable after painting. You do a pretty good job of that on your builds.

but it wouln't have looked the same without them.

To true but I think in earlier times or models they were not present. But like all choppers the downwash while hovering close to the ground can be pretty significant, especially in a bird as big as a CH and all kinds of stuff can be kicked up and thrown into the engines. I think almost all helicopters have some kind of intake protection these days. We had engine filters on the Hueys that resembled something from a vacuum cleaner.
