What I found real useful with Vallejo putty  is you can also use a cotton bud or piece of rag and wipe over the gap being filled, or even a finger   - its that plyable.

Using a damp cotton bud has worked a charm thanks! Basically leaves it to dry already perfect and probably hardly needing a sand if at all!!

Hope 2021 is treating everyone well!

ive been busy covering everyone’s shifts so they can have a holiday so haven’t done much on the hurricane. But put the carburettor intake together.

and using a bit of spare PE from my HMS POW ship build added the grill.

next is the radiator fairing and then the brass gun bases and basically ready for the base prime... whenever I get to that point!

tucked away and probably not seen again, but if anyone does have a sneaky peak it should pass the test!

used streaking grime to get the reddish tinge it seems to have and then a thick black wash and highlights

I’ve replaced one of the cannon bases with the brass one... 3 to go. Didn’t know the outer cannon stuck out more than the inner. All the small details you only learn when you have to work on it

ive drilled out a similar size hole and have filled it with gloss varnish to see if it dries clear even when in a big blob.

if it works will will probably use it as the bulb. Once the lights on the wings are sorted ready to prime as I tried out using a canopy mask for the first time ever! But!!! I forgot to make sure the inside of the glass was clean from dust or finger prints before I glued it on so maybe it will have to come off if there is anything awful on the inside 😂

The wing root filling looks fine. No surface details seem to be lost.

  • 6 months later...

So it’s been awhile since my last update, she says in my cupboard for a while between little bits and pieces. So thought I’d do an update.

planning how to do the camo was what caught me out and it just sat there.

7818C64E-6D53-4153-9C64-4F6F8A67BEEE.thumb.jpeg.16123a69aa76ceb5dd02bcfe87b91249.jpeg

primed and then some base work by airbrushing through a sponge.

59B06386-102F-4C2E-9B36-99205629AC37.thumb.jpeg.dacafbdac97baf03dbdc3c64f21280d4.jpeg

then grey coat of paint.

34594928-F30E-4A88-B4C9-613BA2AD35CB.thumb.jpeg.6ec5235cbd6845bcbca4f5b97fee1709.jpeg

took awhile how to work out the best way to mask so it has a slight feathered edge. Tape would have been a last resort. So using ziplock bags traced the camo with a pencil.

BD76D50D-43A7-4DB1-ADFE-254BAD7AB424.thumb.jpeg.418b20536a82476ac4b8060d2fe53804.jpeg

then traced it to paper

cut them out and stuck them on with Tamiya tape turned on itself to be double sided, took a few days!

I then redid the base effects

and applied the green top coat

I use the same technique for scale feather edging brother... Except I use long thin strings of modeling clay or blue tack, (think spaghetti like) to hold the masks above the surface... It's a simple solution for tight feather edging and makes the spraying easier....

Nice work....

Lot of work on the camo. Just one comment about the feathered edge camo. RAF used rubber mats that once laid on the aircraft surfaces were used to delineate the areas to be sprayed. Hence, the resulting edges were more likely sharp than soft. At any rate, your model looks good whatever the the look of the edges will be.

Good luck and best regards,

Dan.

Hey, yea I had seen bluetak used before but was worried it would rip the paint off! It can be really sticky!! I have been thinking how best to do it for many many weeks! Just bit the bullet

Thanks mate, yea you are right they did have hard edges it’s more a personal like. Just found a hard edge in the small scale was to violent. I went for a very subtle feather and seeing as it’s the base coat will get a few more layers to soften it all up. Here is the feather it has.

the blue shade really pops out against the green. Thanks for the info on the rubber mats as a mask!

Looking fantastic Biggles!  Not sure if you're aware of this, but I saw that NeOmega Resin makes a really sweet catapult for the 1/48 Hurricane.  I have their catapult for an upcoming Walrus build, but this one looks really tempting:
