Ahoy Mates

Just found out that Chuck no longer makes rope. CRAP! I know I am late to this issue but need to find out what my alternatives are. Well now where to go for rope that is almost as good. Is there anyone who I can buy rope from that is of the same type and quality? Or what else is avaliable in natural or synthetic fibre?  I guess I should ahve stocked up better, but now where can I go? Thanks Keith

Crafty Sailor has a range of rope made from synthetics that look pretty good.

A lot of us started making our own rope.  Ether make your own Ropewalk or get Chucks rope rocket. It's quite fun to experiment with various threads and see what you can make.

I'm sure more people will come forward with products to sell in the future.  I've made some good looking rope out of Aurifil thread and my even sell it in the future.  Anyone on here know how to make a  website?

I too, just purchased the Rope Rocket and the Serving machines from Chuck and Syren.

Haven't assembled them yet but will over the weekend. Looking forward to experimenting with both machines.

I have plenty of time since I'm just planking the hull on my current build (HMS Bounty).

Still deciding on what thread to buy or maybe just experiment with what came in the kit.

Don't use the kit string if at all possible.   Search the many threads here and on the net on making rope.  Gutermann and other brands of materials are reviewed and discussed.  You will also need to decide if you want to go with cotton, linen, or poly.

PLEASE take 30 SECONDS and sign up for the epic Nelson/Trafalgar project if you would like to see it made into a TV series.   Click on http://trafalgar.tv   There is no cost other than the 30 seconds of your time.  THANK YOU

Wasn't planning to use it for anything more than just practicing...

Reading others comments (and yours), it sounds like Gutermann is the way to go...

Thanks for the advise!

Tony,  I know McCaffery and McNarry use wire on VERY small scale models, but for 1:98 and larger it will look like, well,..... wire, not rope.  Guess it depends on how much realism one wants to depict on their model and in the end, whatever make the builder happy.

Or hemp, which is now becoming available on the market. Hemp is nearly identical with linen, which has become very difficult to source. I've not yet tried hemp and it appears that it is not yet produced in as wide a range of sizes and colors as the other options, but it is easily dyed, or you could tar it with pine tar for the ultimate in accuracy! The big question in my mind is whether it's being produced in the quality we require (no lumps.) If anybody has tried it yet, I'd like to know. Hemp is stronger than cotton and not "plastic" like the synthetics. It should last the longest if the literature is to be believed.

Here is a link for linen yarn that goes down to 90/3.

https://store.vavstuga.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_code=yarns-linen-lace

90/3 means three strands of 90 LEA.

ETSY can get into Baltic suppliers of raw linen yarn in cones to feed a ropewalk.   Unfortunately the quality control could be better.

If it was a lump that made it to the final twist up rope -it would just be an annoyance.  With my machine, it produces a feed yarn break, which is another level of frustration.

Is in Germany. Have used the products twice. Great quality... great service,  reasonable prices.

Getting back to the original topic, which is about what sources there are for finished rope, I have to say this looks very nice.

Thanks for the post MESSIS.

I use my own home made rope walker. I scour antique stores for cotton and linen thread. Apparently old cotton reels are collectable. I’ve found that old thread is often better quality than modern thread.
