Hi Mike

I had a look through all the reference books etc I have and couldn't find anything on crows feet. Theres photos of a 1:24 model of the endeavour in a NZ museum which show 14 holes in the top for the crows feet. I reckon your'e right, 18 might be too many, go with 14 or 15. Another error in AOTS I guess (there are lots, so I don't use it as the bible) I have 18 holes in my tops because I followed AOTS

Have spent a fair bit of time in the shipyard. As you know I have discovered "hat elastic" makes a fantastic and realistic subsititute for served rope.

 

I have managed to Join Rope and the hat elastic together to create the served top sections of the shrouds. The elasticity allows you to apply excellant tension.

 

I am very please that my experiment has worked. Thanks to Steve for the mouse technique.

And the lanyards... Hmmmm Sometimes the macron shots make the workmanship look poor, it is magnified so much. But to the naked eye it looks clean, sharp and pretty realistic. I just wanted to show the level of detail I am trying to achieve.

Great work Mike, yes the macro shots show detail you can't see with the naked eye and sometimes looks crap but you stand back from your model and think, **** that looks real!

I have made further progress. I have rigged the catherpins and the futtock shrouds. 

I used 1mm hat elastic, and it worked perfectly. I was able to get lovely tension on the catherpins and the Futtock shrouds. it tightened the whole rigg up beautifully.  Also when the futtock shrouds were siezed to the composite stays it has added strength the area where the rope and hat elastic were joined. The result is very realistic to the naked eye.

here are some more detail shots. You will also notice I have test fitted the lashings for the jeer blocks. The last pic shows the main top with shrouds rigged at the top ready to recieve the deadeyes.

I have been working on the ratlines. Finished the lower foremast. I actually really enjoy doing this part, I find it relaxing and kind of therapeutic. I put on some nice music in the backgound, and then work away. Is sort of like knitting or weaving I imagine.

Don - What method are you using to tie your ratlines?

I am tying mine with clove hitches as per the real thing. I peg a card with a grid marked on with correct spacing inbehind the shrouds..

I attach this at the outer corners of the 1st and last shrouds. I divide the height of the shrouds into bands of 4 and tie only the ratlines within that band, adjustIing the tension between each shroud as I go. Once a band of ratlines is done I seal each knot with watered down white pva glue and also apply to the ratline, using my brush to shape a sag in each line between the shrouds.

 

When this is dry I do the next band. I usually work from port to starboard, by the time you have worked on oneside the other is dry and ready to continue. . I try and use 1 length of rope per band, looping to the next row above as I go. I trim off the loop woth nail sissors once dried.

By working in bands and allowing each section to dry, it keeps the shrouds lying correctly.

Does anyone know if the Endeavour had slings? I can't find any reference for them in AOTS, so i am assuming no. but i thought i would check.

 

When did they start using them? The Victory has slings and jeer block set up. See pic from my model.

Hi Chap,

Would like to pick your Brains. (You've probably had a sleep since then!!)

Am embarking on the A/L Build of the Endeavor, would aspire to the quality/fidelity of yours, but am at the very early stage of the build.

 

Did you perform the 1st planking prior to attaching the Keel or did you attach the Keel after cutting a "Bearding" line prior to planking?

 

One other question, Did you get plans from the Alexander Turnbill Library or just use "Anatomy Of The Ship?

 

Have heard both arguments, (Keel/Planking), and have built A/L ships attaching the Keel after 1st Planking.

 

Your advice/experience would be very welcome.
