HMS Winchelsea 1764 by westwood - 1:48

Thank you, Dusan,  for sharing how you made the canon carriage wheels. I might have a go but I suspect the tool making is way beyond my skill level!

I shall certainly have a go at painting the friezes. I shall be very pleased if they turn out half as well as yours. Would you share what colours you used?

Kind rgards

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it.

I wanted the blue to be similar to contemporary models.

For example Minerva..
Now, in the winter, I don't have much daylight in my workshop and I can't take color accurate photos.

maybe this iphone shot is pretty close

Fred I use acrylic paints suitable for brush
Vallejo Model Color.
But the blue color I used was a mixture of Prussian with yellow and white.
When I painted the ornaments,
I simply drew the outlines in pencil and used Caldercraft's Matt Flesh as my first base color.
Then I filled in the dark areas with a mixture of brown and black.
Then yellow ochre and finally a mix of ochre and white for the light areas.
Finally when the paint was dry enough I repainted everything
with a 1:1 mix of polyurethane satin - matt varnish.

I must add that the wet palette also worked well for me.
And even then, it was necessary to thin the paint with water and a retarder so that it wouldn't be too thick and dry too quickly.

This was my first attempt at painting so maybe someone can advise better.
But I'm really looking forward to seeing your pics.
I'm sure you'll do better than you think.

Finally another update.
I finished the port lid with the hinges.
I just left them straight, it made my job easier but I also like it that way.
The canons for chapter six are actually done, so I can move on to chapter seven.

I tweaked and glued the bulkheads and doors. So far only the beams are glued on top.
Then I dry fitted the rest of the deck beams and glued the hanging knees in place.
Next, I glued the lodging knees to the beams so they could be removed.
Only when I have the pump handles ready, will I glue the canons and beams in place for good.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.
I appreciate them very much and they encourage me to continue my work.
Again a small update from last weekend.
Fred, unfortunately I don't have a detailed picture of the hinge making process.
I only have this photo where you can see the notch for the eyebolts.
I didn't even have a any jig, so they are definitely not one hundred percent identical...

Very nice Dusan and the metal work looks really good. How did you get that elliptical countersink in there?

Hi Dusan,

Your work is really breathtaking and a real piece of art, the beautiful painting, the precision of the woodwork and metals, usage of tools, all at a decent speed is truly amazing and very inspirational to me!
I now bought the Proxxon MF70 and  started to learn working with this milling tool, again a milestone for me, but again slowing me down in my build.

Learning so much by this Winnie project, from Chuck, Mike, and also certainly you and all other amazing builders on this website!
Amazing...
Frank.

Wow Frank, thanks for the kind words,
I really appreciate it.
And thanks to everyone who stops by and writes something or just gives a like.
Thank you and I'm glad to be a part of this great community.

I'm also attaching some recent photos,
I've finished and glued the chain pumps to the deck to give me a solid base.
I haven't glued the gallows and jeer bitts yet, but they are on pins with brass wire to keep them stable and in place.
Oh, and I tried to make all the crank parts out of brass.
So far just a test assembly without glue.
When I was satisfied with the test, I glued the guns.
This went pretty fast since I had already marked and positioned them using the pins in the rear wheels.
Thanks to Mike's method.
And then I started to glue the deck beams one by one.
To be continued

Lovely work Dusan! I love the rich, warm look of your model.

I agree with scrubby427.  The warm colors of the model combined with the painting is an amazing look. The metalwork for the pumps is great.  It really reminds me of some of the old museum models.

Thank you guys,
the pictures could be better, but I only have a phone and a small compact camera.

But the biggest problem is the artificial lighting because I have little daylight in my workshop,

and I can't take better pictures.

But what you see is pretty close I think...

Something else from the build - I'm finishing up chapters seven and eight.

The wood color and finish has a wonderful quality.  But the craftsmanship is top notch as well.

Hi Mike, thank you
I cut all the hull and deck planking strips myself from cherry wood.
For the finish I chose a Minwax Wipe on Poly.

Dusan: Thanks for providing a response.. I will have to reconsider the minwax product. It provides a amazing finish!

Thanks again

Hey guys,
It's been a while since I've updated my build log,
but I'm still at work, even though there's a bit less time for building this summer.
Still, I think I've made some progress and I'm getting close to the final chapter.
But I won't say more, I'll let the progress photos do the talking.

Just lovely work.   Very clean.  This stuff is fiddly and there are a ton of parts.   Your care with each part is evident.
