Before I go any farther, I need to finish cutting out and gluing together all those gunport frames I started:IMG_3076.thumb.jpeg.1b168ee45c7fb941cd947e49b46e7f88.jpegIMG_3077.thumb.jpeg.84409e94ccb05bc3e2de7b8127022356.jpeg

32 Lb Demi-cannon, aka feasibility study.

I changed up and wrapped the banding this time, instead of carving it.

1 more demi-cannon, and 39 guns total to go.

Both demi-cannon and a canon perier:

IMG_3083.thumb.jpeg.d7d9d18ad2e8cb2f8a8cc58f686bbd5e.jpeg

Yes, I labeled them so I do not lose track of what I’ve made.

This is the most cannon I have made for any model.

All of the rest that I have made required me to make 18 of them.

I’m a little out of practice when it comes to carving, so this will be a process to get spun back up.

So far, I like wrapping the bandings instead of carving them.

I think it makes the cannon look better.

1st culverin:

IMG_3108.thumb.jpeg.b0daf1f59bd7aeb5afb320550a5e0758.jpeg
Note: the barrel does have a slight curvature, but no where near as bad as the picture makes it look like.

These are a little more involved than the previous cannon.

Were the canon periers some kind of Proto-carronade? Where were they installed?

Yes, the canon periers were sort of a proto-carronade.

They were stone throwers.

Apparently, according to “The Galleon”, they could shoot fireworks type ammunition too, which would start fires on enemy ships.

Phil,

Considering all the work you did to make wooden cannons, did you consider 3D printed guns?  They are cheap and extremely accurate.  The earliest that several of us have drawn up are Pitt and Browne patterns from the 17th century but the Browne and even the Commonwealth pattern (below) looks similar to those that you made.     3D drawings can be sent to a 3D printer and made for about $0.60 each in any scale you want.  If you wish, please feel free to PM me I and can send you STL drawings that you can send to a 3D printer.  2D drawings of Browne are below.  The png pic is not so clear but open the PDF and you can compare the patterns to the ones you are using.

Cannon perrier was a new one for me.  As they were Portuguese, do you know how they came about to be on the Revenge?  This is really interesting and I would like to hear more about these if you can share the information you have on these.

Allen,

The canon periers were put on the Elizabethan Navy vessels by Sir Francis Drake, according to “The Galleon” by Peter Kirsch.

I have conflicting reports about whether they were iron or bronze.

Mine will be iron.

I thought about 3D printing the cannons, or just turning them.

I have access to both a 3D printer and a CNC lathe.

However, I enjoy the process of making everything very much.

The actual fabrication process of the parts is how I relax.

Thank you very much for sending me the .pdf file!

It filled in some gaps I had, particularly with the royal seal (and the location) on the guns.

It looks like the Tudor rose with the crown above it, superimposed on an anchor.

Very similar to the one on the English culverin in the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, recovered from one of Henry VIII’s warships.

IMG_3113.thumb.jpeg.babae1ed7d9bebfed627be81cac6d1bf.jpeg
And given that Elizabeth probably had her own practices in her foundries, I think that I will use the one from your drawings on my guns.

First two prototype sakers are done:

IMG_3173.thumb.jpeg.b8d5ffc6fefae02bf9d1e12d2e515a99.jpeg
I am going to have to figure out gun placement and carriage construction once I finish all of the guns.

The rest of the sakers will have a wood breach reinforcing band.

These sakers did not because I ran out of the heavier dowel rods and have not dropped in on a hardware store yet.

5 more sakers, 2 falcons, 2 port pieces and 4 fowlers are all that’s left.

The sakers are going well.

The falcons are small organ pipe style cannons.

The port pieces and the fowlers are the Henry VIII style block mounted breech loaders.

1 saker and a few breech loaders left, however both falcons are made:

IMG_3186.thumb.jpeg.fe72bf88988c89ff9a8878a964136da9.jpeg

The last saker split out on me while carving so I CA’d it.

I decided to get prepped for the falcons and discovered that there was very little carving to them.

So, I decided to carve them really quickly while waiting for the last saker to dry.

They took about 15 minutes apiece.

The breech loaders should be quick, too.

Now, for that last saker.

All 40 cannon barrels are carved:
IMG_3188.thumb.jpeg.b247d96ba757a7b96e5f9af42bc6e68c.jpeg

The port guns and fowlers (the breech loaders on the lower right) still need banding.

The rest of the guns, except the falcons, need the royal seal on them.

That will be a task for the near future.

My thanks again to @allanyed for providing the seal.

I will copy the seal into Word, replicate it 32 times, sized for each of the various calibers/types of cannon, and print everything out on cardstock which will be sealed and possibly CA’d to allow for minor carving.

Then, I will glue the seals to the cannon.

Prototype seals:IMG_3200.thumb.jpeg.7f00561b2e3eacde5c35700820d4dc0c.jpeg

They look good so far.

The detail is partially cut and partially indented into the seals.

After I make these, I need to figure out the mechanics of banding the breech loaders.

They are so small the card is separating when I try to wrap them.

Everything that is getting seals, has them, except for the sakers.IMG_3217.thumb.jpeg.068bc227ec4492921451a7b10f099732.jpeg

I’ll get the seals on the sakers the next time I work on my model.

I am thoroughly enjoying this build.

Chris did a fantastic job of drawing the plans and making the assembly booklet.

Taking the plans from the Victory Models kit and expanding upon it is working out great.

Plus, they are adapting to card quite nicely.

I know that I didn’t really need to make the guns yet, I only needed a few carriages, but the guns are a major part of any warship.

At least now I have them and I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I could do a full set of guns for a much larger warship (like maybe a 2 or 3 decker in the future?).

Carving them is not overly difficult.

It only takes about 40 minutes each starting out.

Once you get the hang of it, carving the cannons goes pretty smoothly and swiftly.

The last step prior to painting will be installing banding on the breech loaders.

Using normal paper for the banding worked wonders!

The breech loaders are finished:

All cannons are finished and just need painting.

All of them but the canon periers will be painted with a faux metallic bronze.

The canon periers will be painted faux metallic iron.

However, they all will start out painted black.

The bronze ones will have successively lighter browns layered up and dry-brushed on.

The iron ones will have grays layered up and dry-brushed on.
