HMS Revenge 1577 by GrandpaPhil - 1/64 - CARD - from Victory Models Plans

Recommended Posts

All cannons are painted:

IMG_3238.thumb.jpeg.9a5154fe9c4e7c53b5bda2aaba4ff99c.jpeg

I used wargaming miniature painting techniques to generate the faux metallic look with acrylic craft paints.

I have never painted faux metallic bronze before, but it looks mostly like bronze stuff that I have seen before.

So, I’m happy with them.

Next up will be the carriages.

I am going to mount the demi-cannons, canon periers and the sakers on conventional carriages.

The culverin type guns will go on the two wheel carriages.

The breech loaders will get the block mount shown in Zu Mondfeld’s Historic Ship Models.

The two-wheel carriages will come from the same plate.

I will trace the four wheel carriages out of the instruction booklet that came with the plans.

Everything will be sized and scaled accordingly.

After I get all those done, I’ll install the ones I need to preinstall and then get back to covering the hull.

Looking good. Dry brushing is a great technique for cannons, because the downsides of it (a kind of rough chalky look) actually sort of simulates the rough surface you get from casting.

If you would like a small suggestion, I would recommend going in with a very fine brush and accentuate the upper sharp edges and how they would catch the light. I am thinking of a colour sort of like citadels talaren sand, but any ochre type colour would do (the exact colour is hard to recommend because things sometimes look different in pictures). Then in an even smaller space on the upper edges go in with an ice yellow or even pure white (almost just a dot). This will give it a bit of a simulated metallic reflection.

PXL_20230506_131627191_MP.thumb.jpg.51f861cfa8187b052d68be06be76ad2c.jpg

See the above picture for an example. The bronze exhaust pipe things are about the size of a cannon at 1/64. You don't need to do as much of a gradient as I did or do the reflection all down the barrel, just accentuate the upper edges and add a small bright reflections on the sharp edges, just make sure they line up.

I added the highlight coat:

Thank you @Thukydides for the reminder.

It made quite an improvement.

Nicely done on the Dreadnought miniature.

In other news I have the sides of the culverin carriages traced, scaled and glued down to card.

Pictures will follow when I have something worth showing.

I’m making the first set of culverin carriages.

IMG_3249.thumb.jpeg.9ea15cb1c031e1d0a7d7a55490eded79.jpeg

I’m ad libbing a little bit because I am using Zu Mondfeld’s drawing which is side on.

IMG_3251.thumb.jpeg.bb4bc1018d7347e9de737cc117f477d8.jpeg

I put the rear bracing on them because of the eye bolt and iron strapping on the back of the carriage.

The guns on the Golden Hinde in London do not have the rear cross brace.

However, those guns are a lot smaller than the culverins on the Revenge.

All carriages have their iron banding, and holes for eyebolts are predrilled:IMG_3254.thumb.jpeg.3a1c5f720daf4eaeba2e0f5f36e96609.jpeg

Working on wheels right now:IMG_3256.thumb.jpeg.257b0959745a04b0d1a0b2821ef64aa1.jpeg

I need a total of 20 wheels, times double thickness, so I need 40 wheel pieces.

Then I will make the iron banding for them after I make some axles out of toothpicks.

Odds are, you’ll need a borescope to see any of this, but…why not?

I collect too, but my primary fun in model making is the actual making part.

Then, my Admiral and I decorate with them when I’m done building them.

Twenty wheels, cut out and rough assembled:

Making banding:

Some banding already cut:

Twenty wheels, final assembly required:

Then all I need is to put these on the gun carriages, make and add eyebolts.

Then paint them, and I’ll have my first set of gun carriages!

Dry brushing is an excellent technique for creating more depth and realism to a model.

The falcon carriages are assembled and the sealant is drying:

IMG_3350.thumb.jpeg.119742e88eb3caacf58200a572f853ca.jpeg

The sides of the four wheeled carriages are all drawn out and traced out:

IMG_3352.thumb.jpeg.fc89fa1dd3653ccc5097822b22f4251c.jpeg
I made sure to make an extra piece or two.

The four wheel carriages are a little older than the last ones I made and I will have to allow for the difference due to the time period, but they are a design that I am familiar with.

The carriages for the canon periers and the demi-cannons are ready to be sealed and painted:

IMG_3414.thumb.jpeg.9183dd7d7cca6cbd13feade2896d1d4c.jpeg

Since I needed wheels for these, I just made the rest of the wheels at the same time, seeing as they were the same size:IMG_3415.thumb.jpeg.8d4e3bb15bf6dc1c55ea8df56ca8bcd5.jpeg

Since I had already roughed them out, I test carved a block carriage:IMG_3417.thumb.jpeg.074aa27cf113b4179366d22baf6b6732.jpeg

It went well, so I carved all but one, which is drying:IMG_3418.thumb.jpeg.faa47b4e332c021ad066af72a1430b7a.jpeg

I have 11 out of the 22 remaining carriages ready for sealing, painting and the final details (eye bolts and rings).

Now to cut out and assemble the carriages for the sakers!

Here are the 12 that I had been working with:

IMG_3424.thumb.jpeg.9f1a1a5cdfc6f9932e604dcbb0ff61f2.jpeg

I added support brackets, for eye bolts to go into, on the block carriages so I can make it look like the drawings in Zu Mondfeld’s Historic Ship Models.

I know that those drawings are for the older version of the breech loaders, but I do not think they changed too much from the age of Henry VIII until the late 1500s.

Here are my last ten carriages, for the sakers, some assembly required:IMG_3425.thumb.jpeg.a66d5226aeffa92d2dac435a35dfc586.jpeg

I am just going to paint all of the remaining carriages at once, after these get assembled, and then add all eyebolts and other assorted details.
