I think the best way to show spiled planks is to have a look at Chuck's tutorial on planking here: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-framing-and-planking-articles.php  (Planking Tutorial - Lining Off a Hull Chuck Passaro)

It's a method of cutting planks - you start with wood that is wider than normal planks so that you can cut them with the curve especially at the bow.  This means you can't use the planks that came with the kit though, since they are already narrow strips. The plank at the top of the photo has been cut to the curved shape, not bent. Hope this helps.

Glad you posted that for Sjors, Sherry.  That's the proper way to do it......and as you said, you need to start with planks wider than those supplied in the kit.

Since spiling is generally carried out at the bow to eliminate crowding, there is another method, also advocated by Chuck in his kits, which I use..... a kind of 'poor man's spiling'.  If my kit-supplied wood is , say, 1/8" wide, I determine the number of planks needed at each bulkhead for a particular band I'm planking.  In the center, that might be (for example) 20 planks.  As I move forward that number gradually decreases until, at the bow, it may be only 12 planks.  That tells me I need to taper, or spile, each plank gradually down so they will all fit up front.  I'm ignoring drop planks here.  So, 20 X 1/8" = 20/8 but I need only 12/8" up in the bow.  So I need to 'lose' 8/8".  To do that I taper each of the 20 planks down from 1/8" to about  3/32".  That gets me in the ballpark.  That taper runs from the tip at the bow back along the plank about 3 " (assuming I'm using 4-5" planks).  Sherry's photo shows this taper (it also shows the plank edge bent).

I had some photos of this in my Confed log but they were lost and I don't have them anymore.  However, Chuck does provide an explanation in his instructions for Confederacy which are available on the Model Expo site here:  http://www.modelexpo-online.com/images/docs/MS2262/MS2262-CONFEDERACY-Instructions%20-%20WEB.pdf.  You would need to thumb through the pages to get to the planking section.

Thanks Sherry and Augie,

I know now what Sam means......

And Sam ?, I don't have them.

The first picture that I opened at that tutorial from Chuck gives me the warning in red...Avoid this !!!!!!!!!

So I'm not at the bow yet so....lucky me  :D

I have to use drop planks........

Ok.

I go back to modelling school and see how I can do this.

To be continue !

@ Doris,

The weather is good and I'm at work.... :(

Sitting behind glass in the sunshine....

But it is better then rain !

@ Robbyn,

You have a lot of faith on me !

Maybe to much ?

I will see if I can handle those drop planks otherwise no drop planks !

It's the first layer and all of it will be covered at a second layer and copper plates .

well heck Sjors, if you are going to cover it all in copper, then really who cares if you spile, drop plank, or just cover it in wood filler. no one will see any of that anyway. So unless you are wanting the practice, don't sweat it! For me the Syren will be the same way. When I upgraded to boxwood, I did not spend the money on boxwood for the lower hull that will be covered with copper, seemed like a waste of money to me. I plan to use the kit supplied basswood for that part, and do not intend to worry about splices and drop planks in that area at all. I just want a nice smooth finish, so the copper plates all sit nice and pretty.

Now, now ..... you never know.  If the planking comes out looking like a fine piece of furniture you might want to leave it natural!  Put in the time so you leave all your options open.

Robbyn,

You are woman at my heart !!!!!!! :D  :D  :D  :D

I went upstairs to take a look and what do you think ????????

I still have to plank !!!!! :P

And I have made a few planks younger, is that counting ????

I was talking yesterday evening with Mobbsie and I show him what I have done and you know what he was telling me ??????

Don't show it to MSW otherwise you went kick of that forum ! Pffffffffff ( Dutch word )

Just kidding.....I have use some filler at some points and .....like a baby skin so soft....( I can't remember how that feels but I like the way how I wrote that down ! ) :D

@ Augie,

Take my word for it.......It's gonna be an other layer of planks and after that there will be copper tiles !

I just want to make myself angry when it is not going as I want to !

Anja always told me that I have to do everything once at a life time so.....coppering is the answer  :D  :D  :D

Sjors, don't get bullied out of coppering :) Although it definitely has its own challenges, you will get a beautiful result I'm sure.  Its all personal taste of course, but definitely not an 'easy way out'....

Cheers,

Jason

Copper has it's own charm.  Of course, you're going to do individual tiles so we'll get ready to listen to you for weeks ----- like we did with the ratlines !!

Yep, time for an update !

Hull is closed with the first planking  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Filled and sanded.

You see two colours of filler and that's correct !

First I used wood filler and after that balsa filler.

Don't ask me why but it works just great !

Now she feels like a baby skin.

Still don't know how it feels and no, I don't want a baby to check it out ! :P

To prove everything a lot of pictures !

Also the last two pictures is to show you the size.......

Now it is time to clean up the workroom and go back to the Fonz.

Making shrouds and the last ratlines for a while.
