Yes, yes, I know -- this will be yet a third concurrently running project. And actually, this project will not really begin for at least another week to ten days, because I just ordered the kit today, and it has to wing its way over here from Poland. So, first question is: Why this project? For several reasons:

  • I have long been wanting to try my hand at a card sailing vessel.
  • This looks like a great kit for that purpose. The rig is super simple.
  • It is hot off the presses.
  • I want to be among the very first to build one of these (the urge to be an 'early adopter') -- hence the slightly premature rush to start this log.

I will do a deep dive into the kit contents once it gets here, but for now here's a shot of the kit cover:

And a contemporary drawing of the subject by Willem van de Velde.

I ordered the discounted set for the model, which includes the kit, laser-cut parts, mast dowels, and printed sails. In total, this set me back a whopping US$30.62, including shipping, which is about half what it would cost to acquire a single Halinski kit along with its bells and whistles. I have remarked before on the value of ordering directly from Tomek at his website.

And now . . . we wait. In the meantime, I will try to get as much done on the Salmson as I can before the next project arrives.

That's it for now!

You got another follower from a beginner in card modelling. Got to say you're build logs are very inspiring. As a dutch man I really like the subject. Coincidentally, I ordered the seahorse Duyfken at the beginning of this week. My wish is to eventually build the Seven Provinces of seahorse.

Good luck waiting for your order 😁

Only three?  You are slacking off.

Good luck with the paper model.     I am a bit leary after my experience with Wutender Hund.

Yeah, sometimes those kits from Europe to the US can take awhile.  I just finished a model from Ukraine (Shallop by Pavel Nikafin) and started one from Netherlands (Pinas Cross Section-Kolderstock).  Both took a long time in transit.  :default_wallbash:

Interesting. At 1:50-scale, that makes it a direct rival of the Kolderstok Speeljaght wood kit... 🤔

Will be interesting to see how this compares. 1:50 is a big scale for paper ship model kits.

Well, two weeks after placing the order, everything arrived safe and sound. You can add Seahorse to the list of conscientious shippers -- all was securely packed.

First glimpse inside. I believe Tomek has described his mast sets as something like "just sticks," but they are reasonably priced, and I like the fact that I don't have to source dowels of the right diameter and cut them to length. They will need to be shaped, obviously.

Pre-printed sails. These include suggestions for dying, reinforcing, and adding boltropes.

The kit itself. Believe it or not, my knife slipped while slicing open the protective plastic sleeve. Fortunately, I only damaged the back cover. Whew!!!

. . . and diagrams.

And, of course, laser-cut frames.

Looking forward to starting soon

Chris, can you tell what blocks or belaying pins are required to complete the model?

I haven't checked for blocks, but I have plenty left over from my Wuetender Hund build. I suspect only a handful are needed. As for pins, I suspect the subject predates their widespread use.

Chris, do you mind if I tag along as I have nearly finished my Victory SIB?

Well, the Salmson took a bit longer to complete than I expected, but now I can turn my full attention to the speeljacht. Kicked things off by sealing the parts pages and beginning to assemble the hull frames.

This is where I am at the moment.

Marcel, your build looks great so far! Shouldn't we be seeing a build log for this? (hint hint) 🤔

As for being a 'beginner's kit', it's rated a 2 out of 5, so it is definitely not for rank beginners. I, for one, would certainly not recommend it for someone with no card modeling experience. Looking ahead, I can see that doing the carvings neatly will surely be quite the challenge.

P.S. If you want to see a really hard kit to build, you should see the Halinski Bf-110G-4/R8 night fighter that's on it's way to my house at the moment. That one will definitely be placed in the "to do later" pile!

Chris;

I must have missed this in your prior builds. What do you mean by sealing the parts?

I give the parts sheets a once-over with matte acrylic spray. It stiffens the paper slightly and gives a measure of protection against small spills.
