Today I painted the shutters, and the doors and windows. I went with brown paint. So after that, I got to do some planking.:D.20240622_112559.thumb.jpg.9151a14b96f97175ad2847e375679117.jpg

Pretty straight forward,  line down the center and giv'er. I lost the single window I used for fitting,  found it after an hour searching. 20240622_122058.thumb.jpg.ce251958008fa59d97cca57d08413fd6.jpg

It was in bad shape, but I hammered it out and repainted it good to go. Checked the paint still tacky  so build some more  decks .20240622_131031.thumb.jpg.ff5aae68160a43573a26b430e6f4f13a.jpg

This is what I am going to do for the doors and windows, Pile is behind the door holding up the clear plastic then blue paper..the camera doesn't show it but it looks like glass in the window,  I like it.

I put the deck on to see how dark it gets. Gnomer says hurry up running low on oil for my KB lantern.  So I took him out of the boat , showed him the pictures  I took, tried out several colors,  green , a teak color  and the blue. I like the blue. When you hold it on it looks great. So I am going with this.

@Glen McGuire it is all part of the plan, my team never wins, lol cheering for the panthers  lol.

They are pulling me out of the shipyard  lol talk soon my friend's,  is this not the greatest hobby to have. And to have MSW here to back me up how can I go wrong 🙃

I decided on red curtains  for the windows and doors for the main cabin.

I painted the plastic sheets that come with the kit. They have a protective flim covering both sides, I took one side off ,painted it red. After it was dry I cut them into strips  glued them on. But  before I glued them on I removed the other side of the film, looks good. After the coverings were on I clamped the deck down for the night.

20240625_200524.thumb.jpg.f317fdbe75dc8a0140017ee1141730f4.jpgwe check the plan, everything is going great.20240625_152555.thumb.jpg.62417f7ba7f36e14b9c120eeca019464.jpg20240625_152726.thumb.jpg.c9a7b1cbadcf91270692cce25084392a.jpg

Pile said he never pilot a riverboar before cant wait to open it up on the water .:D

Private Gnomer Pile  was ready to send additional fire crew to Texas, 20240624_174649.thumb.jpg.7e9fddf52a29b96c7db5a52d222262c5.jpg  we hear the someone might start a fire to get rid of fire ant.  There is a fire ban on, but I told Pile it was a self contained fire confined to a  bottle.  @Glen McGuire Pile and I agree with @Keith Black use raid or  Mortein, lol.

Starting to look like a river boat, there is lots to do but so much fun.

Thanks so much for looking in.

Thanks Mike, it's a fun build, but they all are fun. This new version of The King of the Mississippi by Artesania Latina is lots of fun. I have looked at most logs for this build, and surprisingly most of the mistakes are fixed.  Other than the funnels don't line up and they show you in one picture to cut the notches out for the upper deck, and in the next it not cut out.

Minor details. No part list and no 1:1 scale plan ,you have to look for those..

 I have finished  planking , 20240626_152742.thumb.jpg.6107228b82817ba0cb3a2182349a62f4.jpg

20240626_162813.thumb.jpg.1f956cefd34befb1292d2659205c60cf.jpg

20240626_132340.thumb.jpg.774382d0aa58da1a90321a46e119b9a3.jpg

I cut all the planks that I had blacken with a pencil. Pile said we have enough  to finish.  But  we were a little  short, have the roof of the pilot house and the rudders to do. But I have to blacken some more later. I have 47 planks left so no shortage there.20240627_191613.thumb.jpg.43ca31d95fa36eaf838a1b6392046a1d.jpg

20240628_103229.thumb.jpg.ca556a921294163c92c72e43f31fb485.jpg

I fitted the funnels, some sanding was required,  I thought of just redrilling the holes ,but thought it might prove to be a mistake later . When  I get back to them it won't take much to make them look good.

Gnomer Pile  is holding the sign up it's still wet. @Glen McGuire showed me how to paint the name on my Hannah-SIB,  I used the same technique,  it looks good at normal veiw distance,  up close in the camera there are some white spots but not noticeable.  Thank you my man.

20240627_203039.thumb.jpg.4fee74b0ca84415d0280a5bc744af314.jpgGnomer  has put his foot down, told me ok funs over ,start at the bottom put the keel on, then the sprial staircases 20240627_202709.thumb.jpg.772056f7d7fdea2c67ce05150c1e9f65.jpg

So with that staircases tomorrow,  then start following the steps that Artesania  has provided, maybe lol . Looks like a lot of painting and cutting up of parts are on the horizon.

After ratlines, paintig is my second favorite thing to do . Thanks for looking in.

Yesterday I was able to finish the keel, then drilled the holes for the rudders.20240629_165232.thumb.jpg.a402963bb590b394b829eb984b55dbcb.jpg

20240629_165306.thumb.jpg.cead326a596b02aac9775ba9422e80e3.jpg

I know , was going to install the sprail staircases, but I made a jig to keep the posts exactly 35 mm apart, and had to try it out.

 It worked pretty good,20240629_163644.thumb.jpg.821e5416d066d215022ea3393dc48403.jpg

Breaking out the electric plank bender too bend the fence at the stren, I also ,well the iron was hot, bent all the deck edges.20240629_145850.thumb.jpg.c6a62926911ff48a9b363937e51f728f.jpg

They are not glued on just clamp and ready to go when I get back to that part.20240629_165927.thumb.jpg.40386cfdbe8a8ec908b9dd066ac4524c.jpg

Private Gnomer Pile is still waiting for the stairs. So I installed them.

20240629_171656.thumb.jpg.784b269f29dfa6b1bb597bf0426edbb5.jpg

They are super glued in, and one is slightly  higher  😳  but they will look great when everything is done around them. So now going to install the  little  tranangle  pieces #92, there are 52 of them.lol.20240629_172653.thumb.jpg.4bc18f247f0b4f8569ccff114659ff56.jpg

But I will most likely  put the fence on the other side first  then the peices all 52 at once lol.

But I know myself pretty good so most likely will do something else first 🙃 😅

 Thanks for looking.

Things are running smoothly,  the spacer I made sure helped out. It did not take long and the fence was finished.  20240701_110655.thumb.jpg.5b94a5eaca006e4240a897f22017e49e.jpg

Now it was time to finish the staircases  and railings  Private Gnomer Pile says we can hang a banner over the stairs to hide the 1/16 differences in height.

Thanks everyone who been following along and for those who peek thanks.

Carrying on with the staircases , I can see I am going to have way to much fun installing them lol.

I made up the drawing for the brass hand rails.   I made the stairs, and painted them. Bent up the hand rails, Gnomer says the on looks like a 92 degree angle  not a 90. So I bent it back.

20240702_165423.thumb.jpg.0d71e47e0e882357f1d8be9c4ebe5a9f.jpg

He also says look at the stairs ,  they 20240702_180917.thumb.jpg.b60278ff9917f838e2c2b8df10fe71a6.jpg

will be gone in a minute.  With that I glued it all down.20240702_182051.thumb.jpg.f9df5bfd763bd1cda7fdfdb03e3b2ea2.jpg

So we'll it is drying  I can now work on the wheel house.  But will be back at spacing the post for the next deck. Speaking of spacers I found the kit supplied spacer just today lol. I had no idea this was a  spacer, and there is some peices that help mark were the post go. It was hard to understand what the beginning of the instructions were,  but now that I am knee deep in to the Mississippi  it is all making sense now. A bit slow but I will finish  the race lol.

This is a fun build  really.  It is different than building sailing ship. And will be glad to get back to some tall ships. I miss ratlines, 😢.  Lol

Talk soon my freind,  just a grinning 😀 away lol.

Back then, as a young guy, I also built a steamer like that after the Gorch Fock.
Unfortunately, I can't remember which manufacturer it was back then, but it certainly wasn't this one.

The last area of concern was these black parts for the funnels, they seem to fit better now. Amazing what paint will hide.1000005527.thumb.jpg.34585d6410bccf2d0904637f5712c947.jpg

I was concerned about how they fit, other logs had problems with things lining up.  I sanded a bit to much but was able to add some back. Then paint.1000005528.thumb.jpg.b0c4747cdfe44f3a669ad410b70d71fc.jpg

So they fit. Next I discovered why my stairs did not line up.  When I super glued the railing going up the stairs I did not have it lined up right.

1000005535.jpg.dce0cca27190b98b29c6ec702b1f1a34.jpg With the amount of glue that I used, I would definitely cause more problems than it's worth. Next time lol. I will do better.

Gnomer says only I will notice, move on.1000005529.thumb.jpg.7ffe2af6a3ec59d331b88793a78bf4ff.jpg

So I gave the plan the once over and found out that the kit comes with these tin plates I will call them.

1000005533.thumb.jpg.ad0ef7d12b70e08cba8c7fba4d0a28a7.jpg

1000005532.thumb.jpg.a86203166008d543eb7fef8c93fef9c4.jpg

They mark out were the  post go, luckily they line up.  It also has a spacer for the post ,exactly 35 mm. I could not understand  what these parts were or what they were trying to show me. Now that I know the funnels line up, the rest of the build should go  OK.

@Artesania Latina have made a great kit here. Its my lack of understanding some of the pictures,  but I am on the right track.   Although the instructions  could  have been better.

1000005530.thumb.jpg.5e4aebe0558ac926222389dde2d71521.jpgPile fainted, he is up set with me because I wont stay focused on the job at hand. Posts  he says posts  not paint, but thinking of the details lol.

20240703_142112.thumb.jpg.9305c39f81c0bc34038745954f6ba76b.jpg

After Private Gnomer Pile  recovered from exhaustion , a little  water he was barking orders. Posts, here's the next one let's go. Lol. But tomorrow is another day. :D.

Thanks for looking , and  the likes,

As I look at the model, I can see how it will look. But I cant see if its on the river or on the stand. Lots of time for that I hope lol.

Talk soon my friend's,  oh yes going to go see  @Gabek  on Monday,  he ordered some supplies for me and they are here, figures and stuff lol. Post them Monday  lol. Way to much fun in the shipyard

Started to put the railings on, I cut up all the planks and clean up the railings , all those little burrs,

I even put one set of cleats, I will call them, you have to bend the little tabs back then glue them on. All 96 of them lol.

Had lots to do for the first Mate today so didn't have much time to build,20240705_100744.thumb.jpg.a1d6b9ac311e45ad5922cd600832a076.jpg

I was missing  a door, so I just made one out of the peice for paddle.  I will put that one under the canopy  at the front.

Jumping around today I installed the brass hand rails,  just a slight bit of bending but not bad

And oh by the way,  this deck is glued on backwards.  So been a neanderthal,  I ripped it off, only two post broke off but ca glue to the rescue .20240705_223800.thumb.jpg.bedfa0b1ac8995f027e34ac04d98be03.jpg20240705_223815.thumb.jpg.da358fa424369dea78e187623f8947fd.jpg

A little  clean up and we are back on track,

So back to the railings  I go.

On a positive note,  I have one more Dr. Appointment in early August  were he will tell.me that I am now cancer free  yippee. Plus  today the other Dr..  For my heart said your fine, model on. I was so happy things worked out I bought a model.:D

Thanks for all your help MSW/NGR, it's been 3 years that I started making ship. Man I think back and am over come with happiness  😊,  they are starting to look like ships. I ordered a ship today that I had my eye on for over a year, I put my Pegasus away because my rigging skills need work and I didn't want to mess it up. You  would think that the ship I ordered  today would have less rigging than the Peg. but in fact it is about the same.

But,I am learning more and more all the time. Plus now everything that I need to know to put models together is right here and I know were to look as well. And ready to start rigging again almost lol.

Thanks for following  along, havin the time of my life .more to come

Bob M.

PS. Did I mention how big my grin is today.

lol.:D.

You know how I said I was going to work on the bow, lol got the wheel house finished  😂 🤣.  I soaked the roof in water for a minute then clamped it to the work bench. 20240707_221445.thumb.jpg.678456240c403cf9f8c1fd554e2c3ccb.jpg

I prepared all the parts  and put it together,  Pile says the is enough  room for a Rum keg, but scale it down.

Pile says use this one because everyone says  error on the small side. Plus the captIn wont get his nukkels caught  on the wheel

I also got these figures  18 metal figures  that you have to put together and paint. My freind made these crew figures for me, they are so cool. He does some fine work, look at the worker by the penny he got a shovel in his hand, how mush do you want to bet that this neanderthal breaks it before I get it installed.

I have this picture of mother and son that I will paint the cattle  like. The son being the one in front. Meet Dimpels  and "Rocky" Shiloh McGuire. They belong to the famous  Ship in the bottle  maker @Glen McGuire, he sent me this picture this morning  and told me Shiloh had daddy issues,  apparently he went next door and beat the snot out of his 2000 pound father, broke both his dads horns off. Lol. So I will try to paint them like this.

Texas longhorns on a Mississippi River Boat  lol.

I was so proud of myself that I bent the trim for this deck in on peice, glued it on it look great, but I forgot to glue the fence on first, off it came.20240709_111351.thumb.jpg.bd053dea15c554d6361fcbc25cdf0eb6.jpg

It all went back together, and looks ok but some how I was a little short.  But I just added a peice and it was fine.I moved on to the funnels, there done just not glued in.

Today was play day, lol, I am trying to replicate  some famous long horns. But the metal figures I got are not that great. I was disappointed.  Like they say it hard to make a silk purse out of a sows ear

Lol. But they have been approved  lol.20240709_205443.thumb.jpg.ff55235348361eba4a6bbf2d6b89c5a9.jpg

These were my first set of horns,  Gnomer says they are way to big lol. So I shortend them up and painted them.20240710_142849.thumb.jpg.0599d028f6c6eb4e9137ec9839273d19.jpg

This will be were the king of the Mississippi will be displayed , it will be docked , with the river behind it, passengers will be embarking and cattle will be going up a stock shut . there'll be a plexiglass  at the front and the back ground will be a painted scenery .

But first I have to finish the boat, soo back at'er I go.  Well this might have been inspired by @Keith Blackpost on his Tennessee build, lol hope you don't mined Keith lol .kom.thumb.jpg.87d281d808d394e5e76ba7c39b234239.jpg

There is a lot of work on the bow to do, so the boat will be facing this way for awhile.  Hand rails, posts , flag pole it goes on and on so back to it.  Thanks' for peeking.

Gnomer and I had a fun day today. I had a few peices cut up for the front hand rail, it took some time to figure out the puzzle of were they go, but Pile just keep pointing out where to put the next one.20240712_150430.thumb.jpg.0b3c48d9add422bf7722825add2aea45.jpg

20240712_165759.thumb.jpg.4c774a4901d982d66ac789df0f0d57ab.jpg

And soon had all that I had cut up all glued in place. There is 11 section on each side that I have to cut 35 mm, so 22 peices for above and below the rails, then on to the stren, but later. I want to finish a few parts at the front. Then the capstan and ramp, looks interesting  🤔.

Pile was in the wheel house, he likes the paint job on the wheel, and was surprised when he found out that I painted the black handel's on the wheel after it was glued in lol.20240712_170514.thumb.jpg.39adc670b20190c26e603135dd4e9eed.jpg

Pile says he can belive how eazy it steers, One finger and it spins right around. I didn't have the heart to tell him it is  because they  are not hooked up to the rudder yet. Lol. Now he wants the bell on so he can get my attention when needed. I put it on, but I think that might be a mistake because Pile will be ringing it all the time.20240712_170319.thumb.jpg.40fd0358ba090236d92713af01690648.jpg

All I can hear is  Aretha Ward  song " You can Ring My Bell "  and he's  off key.

The build is going really good, and I don't see any problems to complete it.

The info here on MSW, is enormous I have been  studying rigging,  while looking at pictures anyway  lol. I have several books and although I don't understand most of it, I want to do better rigging,  I still have my Pegasus to rig,  it is a beautiful ship and I need to rig a lot better.and I order 😅  a ship.

I have been here at MSW for 3 years on the 21st of  this month, I have had a blast non stop. And have heard so much about Vanguard Models, that I wanted to build one before  I  am not able too.  The First Mate said I can't buy anymore till I finished the ones I have.(when I first joined I bought 8 ships lol).  BUT, because I got great news about my health, it would be OK.

So I bought a Duchess of Kingston by Chris Watton of Vanguard Models. And am over the moon for the opportunity to build a Vanguard Model.  It will be my next build. I plan to fully rig the Duchess serving, seizing, ratlines oh lovely ratlines. I can't wait,  for a 70 year old man, the First Mate says I have been acting like a teenager.  Yes I said who cares I am building a Vanguard Model.  And when that ones done I am  going to buy another.

I thank everyone here for all the help, and teaching me how. Although I am a slow learner lol.

Oh, I hear that bell 🔔 😳 🤣  got to go.

@Bryan Woods  thanks, you actually got me started with little people when you did that fantastic job on the Sea of Galilee boat, I laughed so much building that boat.

Pile got me to build the capstan, I taped plastic to the matt because  CA didn't stick to it. After it was all pressed together I made the top half.It looks  good, just have to put the final coat of paint on it. But before I put that on I installed the gangway.20240716_170609.thumb.jpg.bd65726d529190c52cec58819fcdb999.jpg

20240716_233328.thumb.jpg.07618bab0bb6037b4029418acd3a8660.jpg

I basically just tied it all off because the gangway will be off to the portside in it final place 🙃20240717_000128.thumb.jpg.18223a98007148ede5b1f5c109356454.jpg

@Gabek your figures are amazing,  they actually look like they are pushing the capstan bars, wait till they are painted. Thank you my man.

A little more work on the bow and I will be able to turn the  boat on one way or the  other, Pile says it my call .  So a couple of holes to drill and a small fence to make then it's back to the railings.

I can see years of modeling ahead of me

20240715_141719.thumb.jpg.b4d2c3cc5a48b0b06eceba1d3250f3f8.jpg

Besides making a diorama for the King of the Mississippi  I also got me a Duchess of Kingston to build. Plus then I  will rig the Pegasus , so that's a lot of modeling.  I better pick up the pace. I'll be so glad to get back to ratlines. :)

  Thanks for looking.

The hand rails are done on the port side. Pile wants to finish the stern before moving to the starboard side. 20240723_144610.thumb.jpg.597fe207d0fe38fdbf34141edf7aea07.jpg

20240723_145256.thumb.jpg.ea849113c1ffce6438d1c5bba6515e93.jpg

But I told him there is alot of work on the starboard side, stairs ,deck ,hand rails. And because of the size difference between us I win lol.20240723_145319.thumb.jpg.9eca2fee0c7e3ac82d0009d81daced37.jpg

20240724_225526.thumb.jpg.b1c31409f0203c84f75ed187f8d3cff9.jpg

The measurements in the instructions did not line up with what I had. So I redid all the deck and hand rail for the wheel house.. It turn out ok. I might have left a brace off but not noticeable.

20240725_220833.thumb.jpg.242c994b86a78eebb0c4e58c70481654.jpg

Pile says these stairs are not straight 😐.  Moody little fellow lol.

So back to the handrails, 17 section of railing to do, then it's on to the Rigging  .All the poles for the boat line up,  now. Some fileing and sanding did the trick.

I am going to clear coat the funnels with clear flat, 2x clear coat. Great stuff. Also going to prime all the rest of the metal parts so I can finish the funnels as well . Lots left to do, and I have all the little tabs to bend and install the cleats. Neanderthal like little cleats lol.

Progress is slow,  summer time and the First Mate's garden is a bumper crop. We have picked 90 cups of raspberries and 5 gallons of cherry.

Now the peas, beans look like there ready to go, and she wants it all rottertilled  as well.

But it to hot outside today, and smokey so plan to stay in the shipyard today, so I might get my handrails done.

Later my friend's.

Rigging is coming along nicely,  it actually eazy. You just have to make up some eyebolts, attach the rope glue it to the floor, then up to the funnels. There you just in and out the line pull tight done.I add a drop of glue because of my insurcuadeys lol.20240727_130344.thumb.jpg.91ad54b88493596b7c8e10ecc5bb2bf2.jpg

After I placed the Golden M as straight as I could, I sat back and said to myself,  look at the

20240716_233346.jpg.5ece84dc2b19b6ca9ea4343815e70d8d.jpg fuzzy stuff on the gangway rigging.  It's got to go. So I will changed the rope, I had left overs from the Mayflower  that was the size I needed.

The funnels are rigged, both sides. Now on to the rear flag pole and vent pipes and little fence.  Then on to the poles on the side, hog lines ? I have no idea

Thanks for looking, soon I will just have the flags to put on, all the little balls and cleats, andI think that's it for the boat . But have much more to do ,figures to paint,  benchs to make.

Plus I think I am looking at getting a train for the display.  Spent half the day wondering about looking for trains, I forgot  I am supposed to be building  lol.

Thank you so much everyone :)@Keith Black I didn't pack a lunch lol. But I went to my mom's today and she asked about the boat She is 93 . I told her about my idea of a diorama with a train.  And how much the scale train cars are. Ohhh she said I got a train set in the closet. Aghast  , I ran to her closet.  Were did you get this I ask. She had bought it for my nephew but never gave it to him. And just sort of forgot obout it. :D. That was 25 years ago. It is 1:60( ore bigger)  scale I think. But it will work. The plan will be to have the train in front of the boat. And only the engineer will be seen.

This is my man for the boat sitting on the enginers lap, lol if I paint this one like a kid I could say it was bring your kid to work today  lol.

These figures will go along here, down the ramp to a path to the gangway. Also some hatching rails for horses,  plus other  accessories from the train set.20240728_200248.thumb.jpg.5be794152ee8ae9aa8dc1c5506a5d131.jpg

Private  Pile  says hey hey hey ringing the bell.  Let's stay focused  shell we. Finish the boat . So with that I will repaint the SOO engine  to RHE . Thanks Keith for the name of my railroad.  Tomorrow will work on the chimney pipes  and the 6 poles that have to be cut up and stained and drilled. Can't wait to wake up tomorrow and start lol.

I know way to much fun in the shipbyard lol.
