It depends of the width of the planks.

For the planking of the hull I found: if the planks are less 8'' width there is one treenail, if the planks have a width greater than 11'' there are 2 treenails

For the deck planking I found the following:

Planks less than 6'' width one treenail, all other two treenails.

(Source: Wolfram zu Mondfeld, Historische Schiffsmodelle)

Perhaps someone can verify this with another source.

That's good information to have Christian. Thanks. It is going in my Things to Know Database.  :)

Thank You Christan,Ron,and Sinan.I decided to use only one treenail per frame as it fits my skill level.

So heres a picture of my porcupine and half the treenails in. The toothpicks were stained with strong tea.

Thanks again for all your support.  Larry

Hello,I have been busy re-doing parts of the build. The lower deck looked out of place with out the treenails so I re planked it and got a little more of the outside planking finished.

I hope you have a pleasent Easter. Larry

Rummy that is looking real nice. Good job on going back and redoing...treenail the lower deck.... if it did not look right to you, it would have bothered you for the rest of the build. Good going

And Happy Easter

Your Cross Section is looking great. That's a lot of treenails, eh.    Eh, is because I'm from Canada Eh.  :)  I like the color of the outer planking.

What kind of timber do you use for the lower hull? Is it holly?

Larry,

it's good to see some more progress. Congrats on reworking the stuff that you weren't happy with, it's a good attitude to have. Did you change the gun deck beam pillars? The ones in a previous picture seemed fancier.

Regards,

Grant.

Thank you Pete,Bob,Augie,Ron and Paddy.Nice group of builders we have.

Grant. yes I did change the pillars the ones I took out were way to thin and were factory made. The new ones I made myself. You are a very sharp observer.

Christan,no it is just basswood Painted to look like tallow.

Josh, it is harder to copper plate and do it right than to treenail.Mine only has half the treenails as it should have. Thanks Every one Larry

Larry,

Looking super.  I like the "heavier" pillars myself.   And I promise not tell anyone about the "half of the treenails" because they look like they belong where they are.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.I was dreading the metal work from day one. I started it and found out I worried for nothing. Here is how I did it.I did the bends with 2 pair of needle nose pliers.I next glued the pieces together with CA..Next I soldered with tin lead solder, sanded, primed and painted.Seems very strong.Well only 7 more to do,I must remember that" Pride Comes Before the Fall" :(

Thank you Josh, Rusty,Ron, and Pete.

Rusty I have put my elves to work and we will have 80 by Christmas.

  Ron,It is brass.

Pete I know yours need to be bigger.I have called the steel yard and will have the steel delivered.I have also ordered an arc welder.Yours may be a little longer wait.

Sometimes I laugh at my own jokes.

I also tried making some tacked together with super glue then re-enforced with epoxy. This was an easer way.I did this in case I do the the full model.

As you can see below I also made my wife a lovely pair of earrings.

OK, I will stop for now.   Larry

Daniel I used a small soldering iron about 35 watts in power. On the last ones I used "CA" to tack them together then re-enforced with epoxy.Easier and cleaner.

Beautiful work Larry

Might be a stupid question, but can that flat brass metal be purchased somewhere and if so what size is it?
