With still another day of Rain, ( day 4 ) I decided to start making the Mast. First I cut the Mast to length wich is  24' - 0" (Scale) this is also a frational rig , wich means the forestay does not reach the top of the Mast. the mast then tapers from 1' - 6" below the spreaders ( wich are swept back 10 degrees) I then marked , drilled and installed eyelets where the stay's attach to the Mast, I then installed the gooseneck , The boom is 11' - 6" ( Scale) is fairly straight and tappers the last 1/4 , the othe end of the gooseneck is attached to it , The Mast and Boom are now ready for Varnishing. Here are the results

She's looking sweet, Pete! I imagine getting those spreaders in & at 10 deg. was a challenge. What wood is your masting? I've had mixed success with varnishing masting--even with very light coats, I tend to get runs when they're drying regardless if they are vertical or horizontal--so would love to hear how you do it (all your finish work is gorgeous).

Cheers,

Jay

First thanks for all the likes,

Jay, Installing the spreaders was not that bad , I originally was planning on Spruce for the Spars, I ended up making the spars out of basswood.  I will use Epiphanes varnish , Brushed on ( very light )The mast will be in a horizontal posistion. I try to wait for good weather to varnish ( around 70 degrees and up ) Finish work can be tough , I am learning to go slow ( thats been the key for me )

J, On the tapper, once the mast was cut to length I made the marks 1' - 6" below the spreader height,  then I made  mark on the top of the mast then connect the dots with a straight edge then cut the line . This gave me the profile of the mast, the sides were done the same way . The back of the mast was left alone

Nils,  I grew up sailing and around lot of boats , and these boats ( the Herreshoff boats) have that certain charm that have warmed my Heart since the first time I ever saw one

Tom,  I learned the alcohol trick from a freind that built model airplanes, alcohol dries faster than water , so the bent parts can be installed sooner than if you use water.

Best Regards,

Pete

Hi Jay, I am glad I could be of some help. Epiphanes varnish is great I used it on all the boats Ive ever had , its very durable and will last years .Almost 20 years ago I had a Catalina 27 , and varnished all the bright work and when I sold the boat 5 years later the varnish still looked great . Ive been sold ever since

Pete

Well, The Rain Finally stopped. ( I was beginning to think that I should be building and arc) I was able to get alot of Varnish work done. I sterted by varnishing the spars , the Tiller, the cockpit coamings and seats ( I am not sure if I am going to varnish the Cockpit Floor, so for now I have left it alone ) I gave the Rudder Blade some shape and stained the top above the waterline, to match the Transom. I then got a coat of varnish on it as well. I got 3 coats of varnish on the cockpit Coamings and seats, so they are finished , I will finish the rest of the varnishing in the morning. Here are the results of the finished Coamings and Seats

Thanks Geoff, She's coming along and should be quite the looker when she is done

Hi Jay, Its great varnish, they do make a matte finish, it's actually spelled Epifanes , ( my bad ) the varnish brings out the wood grain, and makes it pop.

Thank you Russ, I am pleased with the finish on this one ,

Thanks Michael, she's a beauty

Pete

That finshes really enhances the beauty of that model.  Do you apply it straight or do you cut it down a bit.  My experience with varnishes is that some of them are for furniture and a little too thick.

Hi David, I apply it right out of the can , I use 2 different brushes 1 is very small , to apply the varnish, and a medium brush to go over the varnish, usually the brush is dry. and this will smooth it out. ( very thin coats) I have thinned the varnish in the past , I have found that by thinning it . I lose the depth , so I stopped doing that

Hi Pete:

Not only is your workmanship extremely excellent, and your model is super nice, I'm thinking "What a fun little boat to own!" I think you should consider scaling her up to 1/1 and go for it.

Today , I started by Sanding the Spars, Tiller and Rudder . Then I got the final 2 coats of varnish applied. ( I can't belive it took all day to sand and varnish 4 parts) Next I will paint the water line on the Rudder , and paint the Spreaders a flat white .I will also Stain the material for the toe rails and rub rails ( trim package ) Here are the results
