Continue to work on decking.  I wish I could tell you exactly the parts I am working on, but again, the instructions are all in Japanese.

Hi Bob,

I very much like this build, excellent workmanship and clean joinings. It Looks like this kit is most precise and well prefabricated to enable a master build. Lovely, nice and exotic...

No problem Joe.

Nils, you are correct.  It is a very well manufactured kit and it is going together surpisingly well.

Bob, you are doing wonders.  Even though your model is from Japan it sort of reminds me of a model one of my club members did many years ago when I had a full head of hair and it was red instead of gray, and that was a crooked stern junk that plied the Yangzte in China.  I cannot wait to see it finished keep up the great work.

Bob,

Looking really good!  That oughta get you at least Honorable Mench at the Fair next year.;)

Now that you have fleshed it out a bit, perhaps you could go into detail about the open stern area.   Also, what are your plans for finishing?  will it be natural or will it have some colouration?

Thanks all.

Chuck,

Not much information on the wide, wide world of web about these boats.  I will try to get some details on my upcoming Japan trip.  I do know that with the exception of the bottom of the hull being painted black, these boats were pretty much natural wood.  I will be using just some wipe-on poly.

Bob,

I'm glad you're going to poly this model.  It would be a shame to cover the nice wood grain with paint.  It's looking great!

Hi Bob,

Welcome back! I somehow missed some of your last updates. You've been doing a great job on this build – your model looks fantastic!

I know what you mean about not knowing what to call the parts. It's a funny thing about this model because it's so non-Western that items don't really have a corresponding Western counterpart. And even if they do, somehow it doesn't seem right to refer to them using the same terms. Like the vertical timbers up near the bow are used to support a windlass, but do you call them bitts? Doesn't seem to fit. And, the aft half of the ship supports what might be called a main deck house, but I just feel like I need a Japanese-ee term for it, you know?

So, how dare you come back from Japan without any more Woody Joe kits! I certainly hope you'll be going back soon to get some more...  ;)

Planking the bow section.  Cut a template from the provided drawings to plank this section.  Should finish planking the main deck this weekend.

Nice work on what looks to be a complicated deck planking scheme.

Beautiful work Bob!

For me, planking the deck seemed to take forever. I guess it had to do with cutting all those short pieces and also making the supporting beams and making sure the planking panels all fit nicely. Like I said, you've done a beautiful job.
