  1. Hello Adeline, I just wandered onto your build log and she's looking great. I am starting to look for my second build and the HMS Fly is on a short list of possibles. I look forward to seeing the progress as it occurs Randy
  2. Just found your build, very nice! Love the staggered planking. I am at the point of deciding my next build and lately the Victory HMS Fly has interested me and your build has helped push me toward it even more. Is the build still progressing??? It has been a while since your last post?
  3. I don't know what is the right or better way but I am sort of right behind you and I just assumed I would assemble the masts completely. Like I said, no clue if that is better. I don't see an advantage or downside either way... so... unless more experience says otherwise I'll go complete...
  4. Happy Birthday Anja! As someone told me years ago, it's just another revolution around the sun... some days that thought makes me feel good...
  5. Thanks Mark... I had no idea... I've not spent much time on micro-mark other than a quick glance... but, what a goldmine. Great, another place where I could spend a fortune.
  6. What is a oscillating pencil sander? I've used spindle sanders and air powered oscillating palm sanders and disc sanders and hell, about 10 more not suited for this hobby but I've never heard of an oscillating pencil sander. Sounds perfect for tight spots. Who sells them?
  7. I agree Chris... I'm sure I read it in a description, maybe walnut, but it would be easy enough, and not too expensive to buy better for the planking if it is subpar.
  8. I was going to start a thread about this subject but lo and behold... search saves the day. I suppose I am pretty far from worrying about this but my lustful heart is looking toward the next build, the HMS Diana from Caldercraft. Designed with a coppered hull and that gave me pause. Do I need to copper to do the ship justice? Will it pale because it's not authentic or was it coppered by Caldercraft and not in its real life? Can I cover good wood with copper plates? The wood worker in me says how can you??? It is true... my boat, my decisions ... but still I wondered... could I spend that $$ and not follow along with the design... until I saw rdsaplala's post in this thread... the natural wood shines through and it was a good enough example for me. Now I can start saving the money and try not to think about that wonderful day when a brownish truck stops by and ...
  9. AL directions leave a lot to be desired... many a time I'd do something and find out later that it is out of step or changed or just plain wrong... It looks different than the pic but does it look wrong? To you? You don't have to please them you know... maybe the new arrangement is an improvement eh?
  10. So simple... great idea. I think I have a few jars laying around too... just in time too as I start rigging in a week or two. Thanks for sharing.
  11. I think you're first shrouds look great! I've seen a few jigs lately and I'm trying them all, yours included. The Syren gets closer every day..
  12. I just love how accurate you are Danny. Gee whiz, this is fun stuff! I'm sitting here chuckling and smiling at your inventiveness.
  13. I'm with you Druxey... I don't know what to say next and WOW! just seems so... understated. Ed, you're truly an example to emulate...
  14. She's looking good and getting taller. Think of all that experience she's giving you...
  15. Well hello Hexnut. I'm late to this party and must say.... you are an artist! I find it fascinating that on your intro you talk of 'shyness' for lack of a better word regarding a build log. You shouldn't have worried so... I think we can all learn from your attention to the details. Impressive. And so was the swift on the DSoTM on TMC's page... cool creative!
  16. I hope this morning finds you well Robbyn as we have seen numerous responses as a call to aid for your plight we haven't heard from YOU! I have a tad of knowledge about allergic reactions and one thing is that if you have an allergic reaction your body reacts by producing histamines from mast cells. Allergies are strange in that the body jumps to the defense against a perceived enemy... (i.e.-a peanut is not deadly unless your body sees it as such). Some things have naturally occurring histamines, red wine for instance, and during a full blown reaction the body makes it itself. Histamine increases capillary permeability and thus the swelling. Antihistamines can reverse that to some degree... and unless it is a severe reaction, (see ER) time will lessen the uncomfortable symptoms. Aside from all the advise of avoidance or protective gear (all good IMO)... one simple non-chemical thing that might prove helpful is simple saline flushes... sterile saline flushed into the nasal passages would help remove the chemical molecules and sooth the membranes. Personally, I hate nasal flushes but damn it, they do work... for me.
  17. Maybe skip the CA altogether and learn to love the slower set time of PVA... at least while waiting you can breathe and what the heck... maybe even whistle instead of wheeze..
  18. So essentially what you're saying is the strings are not high tension, they are merely positional to hold the piece in place as it is made to fit precisely... like a puzzle. Makes sense and I do try for that as well with water and hot iron... my incorrect impression was I thought that the strings asserted more tension than they do... thanks for the explanation Randy
  19. Great question Robbyn about the transfer from the shoe dye. My guess would be it dries but... idk... As we all know I'm not to this stage quite yet but my eyes and ears are open to absorb as much as possible.... and a new thread opened this morning which might become a good source of knowledge....it's rope stain in the rigging category... it's new so only a few replies so far but i wager this will yield some interesting stuff http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/2056-rope-stain/#entry49353 It might be worth a 'follow'...
  20. Thank you Mr. Plum, that was a fun build to 'watch', and all from start to finish in one page. Very precise work and it looks great. You must get some serious tension on those cords for clamping/holddown... I have not had similar success with that method. Is there a secret I've missed? Randy
