I was wondering about aspen. I was recently at my local big box store and picked up a piece that is 48x3x1/4 inch and it is pure white with no real visible grain. Was thinking for deck planking with no complex curves or carving it may work out well. It is a bit soft but doesn’t seem to “fuzz” too much. Not sure about staining/painting but for less than 4$ it was worth a try.

Dust extractor - compact and quiet?
MEDDO replied to Rik Thistle's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Dave, it works great on the Byrnes table saw and the disk sander. I have not yet needed to try it out with the thickness sander. I will give it a go this weekend. I tend to do the thickness sanding in the garage were it is less of an issue but if it works out I may leave it in my shop so I don’t have to carry everything up there. Previously I had used a cheepo no name wet/dry shop vac and that one is significantly less powerful than the festool (and significantly louder). A buddy of mine has one of the cyclone over a large vac and it seems to work well but is pretty inconvenient to move around different machines. edit: I am pretty sensitized to cedar so I will run some western red through it this weekend to see. It will be pretty easy for me to tell if it is doing it’s job -
Dust extractor - compact and quiet?
MEDDO replied to Rik Thistle's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
This is the one that I have. I really like it. It is great for our hobby sized tools (Byrnes). I especially like the auto on off feature. The only weirdness is the end of the hose connection to the tools where you have to use an adapter. Other than that I really like this unit. -
Looks great! It is definitely in the works but I am only "allowed" to get one power tool for the shop a year I wanted to go with some better dust control this time. The thought of cutting all the frames by hand seemed a bit much. Next one up will be a scroll saw of some type.

Depending on your particular situation I would recommend something for dust control. Depends on your shop but proper dust control is really important. I personally just got a nice shopvac with a HEPA filter on it which will help quite a bit and for Christmas I think I’m gonna end up with a actual air filtration system. -

That looks really good Ryland. Even though I know the lines are temporarily installed they do look very nice. I like the way they don’t sag or have weird bends in them.

It’s really coming together. Are you using the liver of sulfur stuff or some other product? think I am going to try the Cheerful next

It looks great. When I was building the Pygmy kayak I usually made the thickened epoxy about the consistency of peanut butter. The problem is the bigger the globs the more you have to sand/carve the extra off. With a clinker hull that would be harder to do. I ended up using one of these things and it worked out pretty well.

Very nice work. Are those 'foot rope supports' (not sure of correct term) just regular line? Are you stiffening them with anything to keep them straight up and down?
