cwboland replied to Snowmans's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Great idea for someone on a tight budget that has some spare wood laying around...Hmmm...might have to try this myself -
Looks like you're off to a good start so far. Will be interested to see how she turns out in the end

KDW, Try checking with the manufacturer first. They are usually your best source for replacement parts and manuals.

Ian, Have you checked out your local building supply or home renovation store? I know in North America, they usually have a selection of hand and bench power tools that may suit your purposes. On the other hand, I have heard some good things about the Proxxon from other member here in various posts. Best thing I can say is do your research, find the best model that will do the job and is in the right price range.

Schnu, It could just be the way the wood was milled. I found the below doing a quick Google search for the species: Has excellent decay resistance, and is rated as durable to very durable. Padauk is also reported to be resistant to termites and other insects. (taken from http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/african-padauk/ under Rot Resistance)

Looks like a decent enough kit and I would be interested if I didn't already have one.

Vett, Have you tried water in a spray bottle, ie. old windex bottle or something like that? I have used this in the past. Just avoid spraying too much at once or you will end up with white spots that are very difficult to get rid of.

Domanoff Rope Serving Machine
cwboland replied to Ensign's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Gary, Don't forget that it's August and the European countries typically shut right down during this time of year for about three weeks. He may be away on vacation right now and unable to check on orders, etc. -
HI Michael, Just a little few hints on soldering. Keep your iron hot. The hotter the better, but only to a point. If you are soldering brass fittings, I would also recommend silver solder as opposed to tin solder. Silver solder tends to bond better with brass than does the tin. And last but not least, practice, practice, practice. Before you even attempt anything on your rudder, try lots of soldering on some scrap you probably have lying around.

The "first CUT is the deepest"
cwboland replied to AndrewNaylor's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Lee Valley has many different depth gauges available. You may want to check them out. Or even your local hardware store or lumber yard -
Everything looks great. What made you decide to only plank the port front quarter of the deck?

Tool for bending metal strips or wire
cwboland replied to Don Quixote's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
You might also want to have a look at an RC hobby shop. They usually have something called a Z-bend plier used for bending control rods to fit into the servos. Might work for the tight bends near the tops of your hammock cranes -
Michael, Everything looks great. Keep up the good work

Thoughts on standing after running rigging
cwboland replied to cwboland's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Thanks all for your thoughts and insights. I was just curious as to whether anybody had tried this in the past, but now I see why the standing rigging is done first. -
I was wondering if there were any advantages or problems that anybody has encountered with regards to doing the standing rigging after all the running rigging/sail hanging has been completed. I looked through the instructions and it seemed easier, to me at least, to do all the running rigging before the standing. Currently working on an AL 1:75 Bluenose II
