I'm always happy to see a Coast Guard model being built here. There aren't too many kits available. I'm a Coast Guard veteran and I've been thinking of building the Dumas Coast Guard 40 foot utility boat at some point since I was a coxswain on them many years ago. Good luck on your build.

They look pretty darn good to me!

Way to hang in there B-Ram. She's looking good! I doubt that I will ever build a model in which I wasn't fixing mistakes. Seems to be part of the ship modeling process...

Still having issues taking backing off of boottop tape.
Ed, I've had good luck with Tamiya Modeling Masking Tape. It comes in several sizes and they also have some that is made to bend around curves. It works really well. I got mine on Amazon and it is probably available in good hobby shops as well.

Gorgeous work, Glenn, you're light years ahead of me in modeling skills! You're moving through this build fast too!
I have a set of those small chisels but haven't used them much because they weren't very sharp brand new. So I'm glad to hear they are useful when they are sharp! It looks like I'll have to order one of the Richard Kell Honing Guides from England since I haven't been able to find any online vendors in the states or even in Canada.

I will say the support from Zorn is topnotch. But that being said this is still the hardest kit I have ever tried to assemble. And largely because of the vagueness of any directions if they exist. I've built over 20 kits over the years and have never had the issues I have had with this one. Very, very hard build. You probably need scratch building expertise to really handle this kit.
I deleted my previous post and will keep this as brief as possible.
Maris Stella has a beautiful line of interesting models and Zoran is always willing to help. My first build was the Maris Stella Batelina. It is a lovely small boat. Then I began building the Stilac but I had trouble understanding the instructions and I put the model on the shelf. Next, I successfully built the Medway Longboat by Syren, which I feel is at least an intermediate level model, because the instructions were so good and I learned so much.
I like the Maris Stella line of models a lot. However, I do believe that there is room for significant improvement in the instructions.

First of all, congratulations on your engineering degree!
I just read over your build and everything looks great so far. I think the Jolie Brise is a beautiful boat and you're doing a great job. I'm building the Pen Duick by Artesania Latina and the instructions are not very good especially when it comes to the rigging. I hope they are better for the Jolie Brise. I'll be following along with interest. Good luck!

I just found your build log of this interesting ship, Ed. You're doing a great job with this complicated model and she looks really good so far.
I've steered clear of Billing Boats models, even though I like a lot of their offerings, because they have such sparse instructions. I'm not experienced enough to be confident that I'd be able to figure everything out without making a big mess of the build. So I'll be interested in watching fill in the gaps as you continue with your build.
My wife and I spent 2 weeks traveling around Nova Scotia a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. We spent five days in Halifax before driving down to Lunenburg, then over to the Wolfville area and, finally, up and around Cape Breton Island. We loved the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax and the Canadian Museum of Immigration is one of the best museums we have ever visited. We took an afternoon sail on the Bluenose when we were in Lunenburg and explored the amazing tides in the Bay of Fundy before we drove up to Cape Breton for lots of hiking and listening to great Scottish music in small pubs. We plan to make another trip in the near future. You certainly live in a beautiful Canadian Province!
Good luck on your build. I'll be following along with interest.

I'll settle in and enjoy the show as well, Sjors. The Victory is such an impressive model and a massive undertaking. Wishing you smooth sailing through your build.

This book is the Bible of English fishing vessels! I ordered mine from an online second hand bookstore, based in California of all places!
I'm seeing two similar titles of books by Edgar J. March: Sailing Trawlers published January 1, 1953 and Sailing Trawlers: The Story of Deep Sea Fishing With Longline and Trawl published June 1, 1981.
Is the 1953 book the one you are referring to, Chris?

Tom, did you ever figure out the gaff topsail rigging? I'm trying to figure out a similar rigging on the Pen Duick I'm building.

She was built as a cutter (1882), hence the lovely lines.
I'm really excited about these models. The Pen Duick I'm building is a gaff rigged cutter and I could use some help in seeing how the gaff sail and the topsail are rigged on these cutters. The Artesania Latina plans are practically useless. I look forward to seeing your plans when you have them available.

Great find, Erik. I just ordered it also. I hope it will help me with rigging the Pen Duick.

Aren’t you starting your Flirt?
Yes, I will be starting the Flirt while working on the Pen Duick as well. I'm just glad that Chris isn't just making warships. I love the fishing vessels and all sorts of small crafts.

What a fantastic line of models you are creating, Chris, and the instructions are as good as it gets. I really like the fishing vessels you are offering and I hope you'll continue to consider more of these smaller working vessels in your line of models in the future.

Great looking model, Steve! I have this model on the shelf and have always thought she has such beautiful lines.

Nice rope! What is the brand and type of thread? I can't really read the label in the photo.

Thanks John. I spent 1 1/2 years on the Coast Guard Cutter Storis tumbling around the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska and then 2 1/2 years on the 40 footers based at the Captain-of-the-Port Los Angeles/Long Beach Station way back in 1966-70.
Are you planning to make your radio controlled or a static model? It seems like Dumas specializes in RC models.
