Hey!  If my post sounded critical of replies by Bob and Justin, I’m sorry.  After all, you guys provided straight answers to the question!  As self proclaimed master of thread drift I probably clouded the issue.

As a matter of fact, I used my Sears rotary tool yesterday.  It did a great job of cutting brass tubing to line portholes in the model that I am building.  In fact, the accessories that I use by far the most with this tool are the little disposable cutting discs.

No need to apologize for anything, Roger. I didn't think your post was critical at all. I was just suggesting that a flex shaft attachment can be added to a Dremel or a Proxxon rotary tool which then gives you a very slim tool to use.

I like adding WOP as I go, the boxwood drinks it in almost as fast as I put it on. One of the many benefits is it makes painting easier. After the WOP dries (overnight generally) I buff it out with a soft cotton cloth and lightly sand any surface being painted with 400 grit paper. The WOP gives the paint a nicely primed surface, much like a painter uses Gesso on canvas before the first stroke. The paint isn’t absorbed by the wood and the paint has a nice finish once dry.

Beautifully done, Glenn, and thanks for the painting tips! That boxwood is gorgeous. I'll be starting mine soon. I'm currently busy getting my winter, container garden in.

We are having our Annual Steam Up , October 24, 2021.  If you’re so inclined to visit San Francisco and join us it’s a good day.

Beautiful steam launch, gogiantsks! I would love to build one one of these. It so happens that my wife and I will be in San Francisco on October 24th. Our son lives in Noe Valley and we're going to the Eagles concert at the Chase Center that evening. I think we'll plan to go over to Spreckels Lake and to see the Annual Steam up. That would be fun.

We're huge Giants fans as well. We were at two games last week and we lost them both...bummer! As long as we win the division and send the Dodgers to the Wild Card Game, we'll be happy. Go Giants!!

  4. Thanks for stopping by, Tom. I'm looking forward to working in the my shipyard again.

I've really enjoyed getting back into playing my guitars also. My cycling took a bit of hiatus recently though. I took nasty crash over the bars on a downhill curve when I hit some rough pavement really hard and the front tire pinch flatted. It's taken nearly 10 weeks for my ribs to heal to the point that they don't bother me too much so I'm back riding again too.

We were at the Giants game today and we lost to the Padres so we're only one game ahead of the Dodgers now. It's a furious race in the NL West with our arch rival. We're going to the game with the Braves on Sunday so we hope to see them play better.

You're doing a wonderful job on your Constitution cross section.

Erycina, with masts and bowsprit is 525mm long x 379mm high

Nisha, with masts etc. is 387mm long x 311mm high

These smaller models are a welcome addition to the Vanguard line. I've always admired the realism that a very good diorama can add to the display of a model and I would like to try and make a diorama someday. One of these working fishing boats could be a really good choice for a heavily weathered model set in a rugged, North Sea diorama.

  6. Gorgeous, Glenn, no other way to describe it!

I'm loving the warm look of the boxwood with a few coats of WOP on it. I think it's going to be a tough decision to paint a large portion of the hull white since your planking is so beautiful.

I've been vacillating between starting to build the Flirt or wait a bit and get the Sphinx. My decision has now been made and I will be starting the Flirt when we get home from our week in San Francisco celebrating my 75th birthday and visiting our son. So I'll be swimming along in your wake pretty soon!

You can see that bevelling lines are also included.

A Dremel is used to make short work of these. In fact, it took only 30 mins to bevel all parts on this model.

Having these beveling lined included is so helpful as it takes away a lot of the uncertainty of roughly beveling the bulkheads and the bearding line off the model before the final fairing. Is there any particular reason that these lines are not included in the larger Vanguard models like the Flirt and the Sphinx?

Also, what are the overall dimensions of these wonderful models?

Bend the traveller to shape and trial fit into the holes. Then dip the ends into CA and insert.

This is exactly how I would do it also. Just be careful to use only a tiny bit of CA so that you don't get glue squeezing out onto the deck. Have a small cloth on hand with a dab of acetone on it so you can quickly and carefully wipe off any excess CA.
