  1. I think most of our hard chine vessels down here were built upside down. Russ
  2. That is a good solution to difficult problem. We had vessels down on the Gulf Coast with a hard chine, but I am not sure if they shared this particular characteristic. Very interesting feature. Russ
  3. Some more progress on the lower belt, especially near the bow. This is where you can see the appearance of the planking begin to develop. Russ
  4. I went to a local trophy shop for a nameplate for my recent project. They did a great job and it was very inexpensive. I agree with Steve. Give that a try. Russ
  5. Your planking looks great. I agree that it takes time to get it right. Nice work. Russ
  6. Beautiful model. It is quite imposing. Your rigging is coming along well. Great work on a rather complicated subject. Russ
  7. Bob: I am sure the repairs will come out fine and all will be well. This is a really nice looking model. Russ
  8. This is tonight's work. I began the lower belt on the starboard side. The garboard strake is complete and I have worked in the forward planks of the next strakes above. There is a good deal of twist in these forward planks in the lower belt. Like the rest of the planking, they are spiled and tapered and then soaked in hot water. I clamp them in place wet and when they dry, I can glue them in place with very little clamping needed. Russ
  9. Elia: Thanks for dropping in. I appreciate your kind words very much. As always, I am learning new things each time I build. Several lessons picked up so far on this build will be forwarded to the next build. The thumb injury has healed and the thumb is functional. There will always be some pain I reckon, but it seems to be less as time goes along. Russ
  10. Very nice work on the masting and rigging. That side view is impressive. Even at this scale the model must be close to 3 feet long. Beautiful. Russ
  11. Elia: Nice looking spars and fittings. These early 20th century fishing schooners have a lot of metal work and yours looks great. Russ
  12. Very interesting project. The details are coming along quite well. I like that you are modeling a vessel that is a little off the beaten track. Very enjoyable to see your work. I have also made my own study of tonnage admeasurements and used them to reconstruct our local vessels for my research and modeling projects. I had heard of Brownlee's research, but it was not until quite recently that I read his American Neptune paper from 1994 on the subject. I had been studying tonnage admeasurements and creating lines drawings from them for 2 decades before I read Brownlee's work and found out I was actually doing much the same thing her had done. Russ
  13. Carl: That is very kind of you to say. I hope to be able to live up to that one day. More progress photos to come soon. Russ
  14. Excellent work. I completely understand the desire to build plank on frame and then plank the entire thing. Build the model you want to build, the way you want to build it. It is very satisfying. Russ
