SHIP'S BOATS
NMBROOK replied to piratepete007's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Nice work on the boat Pete Yes painting the interior first is the easy way,but you are right for photographic demonstration this is best.Whilst I think scratchbuilding would have produced the most favourable result, what you have done was the right way to go about it.If you had gone down the scratchbuilt route,I should imagine you would receive several emails on your helpdesk saying 'what am I supposed to do with the kit boat?' I did check you new update, aside from your excellent supplementary files, your model of WFdF is wonderful, great work! Kind Regards Nigel -
I know what you mean Pete I think the important thing is that all kit manufacturers have to maintain their profitabilty and some compromises have to be made to maintain that.Euromodels(no I am not on their payroll ) do supply the information to address these compromises. Many of us have followed the outstanding work Chris Watton has done with the work he has done for Amati in the development of their Victory kit, however it may sound pessimistic but I reserve judgement until I see a production kit.Things may be changed to reduce production costs when Amati get their hands on the mass production side of things.I hope not,as it is certainly the finest Victory kit developed(another reason for Euro models to leave alone).Something else as we are on the subject. There are some inaccuracies on Mordaunt's design that does not tie in with historical information, however for Euromodels to produce an accurate rendition of the stern and prow area(which is actually ridiculously complicated for what it is)would have meant the price would be in Royal William league, nobody would buy it!Anyway off my soapbox,I'm going to check your boat out Pete Kind Regards Nigel

Thank you very much indeed Pete I agree with the anchor situation. Most ships carried anchors of varying size and they were selected accordingly to the task in hand. Most kits supply one size anchor(a generic fitting from there range) and say simply there is your anchor. The difference is the information is there in the Euromodels drawings to adapt the supplied anchors should the builder wish to increase the level of accuracy, whereas the normal scenario is the kit anchor is the one shown on the drawing.Researching anchor sizes can take as long as the rest of the ship,so it is great that Euromodels has done this part already.Personally I would rather spend my time researching other more interesting parts of the ship,so thank you euromodels .I shall check your boat out Pete as I know we spoke earlier on the subject Kind Regards Nigel

I do find it amusing they have Victory as a background on their homepage.I can understand why they haven't made a kit for her, simple reason is it is a saturated market. You have to come up with something different like Chris Watton did i.e. full interior. The kits they do produce sell simply because, apart from the high quality, they offer subjects a little different from the mainstream.Whilst the Euromodels ethos would be interesting applied to Victory, would it make good marketing sense?Just my thoughts. Kind Regards Nigel

Fabulous work mate!!!I agree a cautious approach re the rigging of these is the best. You have marvelous scale fidelity there and that is all too easy to spoil with oversize rigging. Kind Regards Nigel

ROYAL CAROLINE 1749 by Doris - 1:40 - CARD
NMBROOK replied to DORIS's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
Hi Doris Yes I understand what you have done now As you will have seen on my build,I haven't got this compartment as I am working direct to the book. The problem is what should in reality be actually at the end of the bowsprit and how this is fixed. If you follow the book it is just a square block sat on the deck,it just seems wrong and not strong enough.I may consult Janos and see what he came up with. Thanks again and looking forward to more of your fantastic build Kind Regards Nigel- 881 replies

NMBROOK replied to DORIS's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
Hi Doris I fully understand,I will do a drawing and post it later tonight. If you do take the book as gospel, then it means there is little support for the bowsprit. Kind Regards Nigel- 881 replies

NMBROOK replied to DORIS's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1501 - 1750
Fabulous work Doris It looks like you are working to the Anatomy of the ship book, same as me.There is a mistake on the drawings as to how the bowsprit is anchored. In the side view it is shown going to a wooden plate that fits between the legs on the foredeck bitts,as the gussets of the anchor bitts falls short. In Plan it shows the gussets much longer on the anchor bitts and the wooden bowsprit support plate fits between these.I just wondered how you went about this as I don't think you have posted a photo before the foredeck went on.I apologise in advance if you read this with google translater as I should imagine this will make little sense. Hi Marc It is quite funny that I was just ready about the battle of Beachy Head 1690 where the English and Dutch formed a combined fleet to defeat the French! It is funny how one's allies seem to change on a regular basis.Sovereign did live long enough to see this alliance,so the 'golden devil' that once was foe,was now friend. Kind Regards Nigel

Hi Eamonn, check other thread on 'hotlist'now,Antonyuk started this one off I got the only copy abe books had but Amazon have a rapidly decreasing supply listed around the 30 Quid mark. You can have a new copy if you have the best part of £300!!!I nearly book the book new when it was released Think there is a moral in there somewhere. That one Antony I got mine from Abe books, but Amazon do have several copies at the moment listed around a similar price.I thought I would take a punt as once it's been mentioned on here, you struggle to find a copy Incidently Amazon have a new one for two hundred and something, yeah right, who's going to pay that! Kind Regards Nigel

I would go for the masts Eamonn At least you aren't stalking the postman You are correct Tony for things like kits, the problem start when you order multiple items. For instance if Eamonn has ordered 20 lengths of planking and there are only 5 in stock, although showing as in stock they don't have the full amount. Kind Regards Nigel P.S.ordered a copy of Lavery's construction and fitting of the sailing man of war today, that site is addictive!!!!!!!!Gonna have to start attending book buyers anonymous meetings

I have just ordered the above book for £42.50 delivered s/h.It pays to shop around Chris.I think it may pay to order from Europe to save money.£42.50 is probably 30 cdn dollars.I got mine from Abebooks.co.uk,unfortunately this was the only available copy at the minute, but they do ship internationally so well worth a look when you have been quoted those sort of prices. Kind Regards Nigel

Serving machine looks good mate Nice and straight forward,I don't think there is any need to overcomplicate things.I am thinking along very similar lines although I will make mine powered. This is simply because I have a highly geared 6v motor kicking about from my RC model building.Thinking about all the Technic lego I had as a kid and was given away sold, probably enough to build a planetary ropewalk as well .However,I do think unless you particularly like making rope,I think there is a lot to be said for just buying it from Chuck.By the way I have just returned from sorting office with my lime wood, sorry  .One thing with CMB,and the reason I favour Model dockyard,is that they will take your order without the stuff being in stock.Your timber could be delayed because they simply don't have it on the shelf. With M.dockyard you know the stock situation before you order,so if they haven't got it and you need it quickly, you can try elsewhere. Kind Regards Nigel
