I just looked through your build log and this work is literally jaw-dropping! I really did have my jaw open when I saw this! The level of detail you have achieved is amazing! I greatly admire your build and wish to follow and learn from you. If I am ever able to build something half as good as this some day I will be very happy!

Thanks all. Apologies for the somewhat haphazard collection of photos as I'm drawing from a bunch of different devices from different time periods. Here is a picture of my pile of frames that precedes several of the pictures above. Rather than waste your time with numerous photos that I have little recollection of, i will jump to close to where I am today. The next one is of the transom and filler pieces. This was one of the most challenging tasks so far.

For all of you that have been following along, I cannot thank you enough for the likes, encouragement, comments, ideas, and suggestions along the way.  I feel like each one of you had a hand in this effort and I can guarantee you it would not have come out near as well without your help.

Thank you Everyone for all the likes.  I have finished planking the deck.  Made all the gun ports and started the stove.

The next items to be make are the cisterns and winches.  I decided to show the starboard cistern with its hood and the port cistern open, showing the sprocket wheel and chain.  The cisterns are straight forward in their construction.  They are simply a box with openings in the bottom for the pumps, and a slide on the outboard side to allow insertion of the pump dale.  The inboard legs rest on the mast step and the outboard ones are on the deck.
I was lucky enough to have a sheet of photo etch from Admiralty Models developed for the Swan class.  They are no longer available.  I used this for the sprocket wheel.  The photoetch sheet has the rim of the wheel; short lengths of brass wire were silver soldered to them.  I also made a segment of chain from pieces of the same photoetch sheet.

The next photo shows my tipsy cisterns.  The drainage plugs are in place.  A rope handle in the plug will be added later.  The chain was lifted up to illustrate the detail in the photoetch.

The winch assembly is supported by rhodings on the cistern hood, bitt pins and end support pillars.  The hood and pillar rhodings are repesented by brass tubing.  Those on the bitt pins are inset into a spacer block, as seen in the last photo.  These will all be blackened.

I have had a little more time to work on Echo.  The upper deck planking has been laid.  Parts of it were laid twice since I forgot to locate the openings for the pump tubes.  And speaking of making things twice, my new motto is measure three times, cut once.  I discovered that somehow the location of the chain pump openings in the mast step was off by 1/8".  I am happier with the remade step anyway.  The ringbolts have been installed surrounding the mast opening.

The next step was to begin installation of the pumps.  There are a pair of brake pumps and a pair of chain pumps.  Temporary chain pump cases have been installed.  You can see from the picture that they are vertical but form a V-shape when viewed fore-to-aft.  The brake pumps are octagonal.  I made these in the V-jig that is normally used to shape masts.  A chisel was used to knock down the corners of a square blank the final shape was obtained with a sanding stick.  The pump was bored by chucking it on the lathe and putting a drill bit in the tail stock.  A second hole was drilled for the discharge spout.  I wanted a color contrast; they were made from apple.  I apologize for the out of focus picture.

The pumps are temporarily installed.  Next up is the cover and winch for the chain pump.

I mitered the molding that wraps around the uprights using the disc sander.

I used this method on a longer piece.

Though I used a long piece for the photo, I used this method when the length was short. Push the stick up to until the desired length is achieved.

Once the uprights where completed, I used a jig to register the holes for the headstock which sits between the uprights.

Jigs like this help to align and hold everything together during assembly.

A left over beam was used simulate the actual positioning of the belfry rail as seen on the ship. This makes it easy to see if the timberheads are at the correct angle to the deck. Tweaks where needed.

I backed the jig with another strip in order to add the "L" shaped piece. This keeps it inline with the timberheads.

I added the cover boards for the stove stack along with other fittings to complete chapter nine.

I really like that special jig you made to help hold the masts during basic rigging procedures before being attached to the ship. Going to have to copy this idea when I finally get to that stage on my model. Your Niagara is looking really good.

A snow day here in Denver, so am spending some time doing ship building. Yesterday we had nice weather, so I took the time to cut out the remaining keel pieces of the bow. These are in Boxwood like the rest of the keel. I did not take any pictures of the loose pieces, unfortunately. Then last night I started gluing some of the pieces together, and then attached those to the rest of the keel. There are still two more parts to glue on.  This is how she sits right now. The rib you see is Frame X and is not attached but just sitting in the jig, further aft of where supposed to be. Also the Transom piece sitting above the sternpost is not glued down yet. But I may be attaching two of the taffrail pieces in the near future.  I am waiting on that transom piece until after I can get the rabbet made in about two weeks.

Earlier this month I was browsing around on YouTube and happened upon a fascinating documentary about The War of 1812. During the documentary, the narrator was sharing excerpts written by Theodore Roosevelt (pre-presidency, as he was only 23 at the time), who was a history buff especially concerning this war and wrote a book about it still in publication and use today. Roosevelt wrote, "It will always be a source of surprise that the American public should have so glorified Perry's victory over an inferior force, and have paid comparatively little attention to McDonough's victory, which really was won against decided odds in ships, men, and metal.... Lake Erie teaches us the advantage of of having the odds on our side; Lake Champlain, that, even if they are not, skill can counteract them."

I was anxious if the bow template would fit on my Winnie, and everything seems to be allright, it seems to fit within less than half a millimeter tolerance…
I cut the portside one and turned it over by the way, the print is on the other side.
The first thing I did not oversand I guess…LOL.
