Small lockable tool chest
JeffT replied to mspringer's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I bought an 8 drawer wood chest from harbor freight that locks. -
I felt the same way when I started mine. Just take it one step at a time and you'll do fine.

Your Wasa looks great. I'm curious about the bolted on piece at the bow though. Whats that?

Wipe-on Poly
JeffT replied to Stuntflyer's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
I haven't used primer over the poly. I just paint over the poly. Usually two coats is enough with badger paint. -
Wipe-on Poly
JeffT replied to Stuntflyer's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Yes, paint colors. Once the wood is prepped I apply the poly and paint after. It makes a nice smooth finish. I don't think its possible to stain after applying poly as it would prevent the wood from absorbing the stain. -
They look expensive

Wipe-on Poly
JeffT replied to Stuntflyer's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Wipe-on poly is a protective finish that would be applied after staining. On the other hand, its nice to paint over so I apply it to unfinished wood and then paint. -
My fingers have been the clamp. The blocks are so small that clamping them is difficult. However, I might be able to find a way. Maybe clamping them in the end of a hemostat might work. The blocks get ruined because I end up chewing up the end of the block trying to drill them. Maybe I'll post a topic and see how others have approached this little task.

Its a little detail really. I'm in the process of rigging the guns and I chose to drill holes in the ends of the 3/32" blocks to install the hook. After destroying a dozen blocks and successfully completing only one, I gave up for now...I'm building up the courage to try again. If there is a easy way to drill that hole, I would like to know what it is.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
