Am started to plank the first belt of 8 planks (10 at mihtship) 9 at the bow (drop plank )
I have lining off the hull and all the tick marks are in place.
I use chuck's method of spilling the planks and here is the result of the 1 plank of the first belt!

We're back in Florida, and the longboat remains in New Jersey. Before leaving, I was able to make the mast, boom and gaff, which were all made from the square stock in the masting and rigging kit. I also made the horse at the stern from wire and mounted it. I was able to mount the mast, make eyebolts and hooks from wire and make the belaying pins. We are planning to be back in New Jersey for Thanksgiving and hopefully I will get a lot of the rigging done at that time. I will do the stropping of blocks and deadeyes here in preparation for that.

    Hi Mates,

Denis, Frank, E,J,  thanks - glad that you might use this idea.
Patrick, as always thanks as well

Some updated work in the same area as before. Finished up the mast cheeks or are they bibs?? See lower pics. That said, should those long mast cheeks? that are wrapped in ropes ALSO have some nails pounded through into the mast?? I spent a lot of time looking through my books, and at “Google University” looking through many photos – found nothing helpful.   The only hint was the Boudroit Book (see pic)– it offered a slight hint at a yes.

I don’t have his book 1 (hull construction)– that one certainly details mast construction as well. I have not seen nails in any of the brilliant Russian museum quality models that I have looked at. Hmmmm?

Any suggestions are appreciated. I just don’t have enough knowledge to decide nails or no nails. L

PS2: I know that historically this area should be painted black –

    Regards

A small update... the port channels all have their deadeyes and chainplates attached. I need to fill the gaps in the channels and smooth them back, but it's nice to have this done.

I've also been working a little more on the open rails on the quarterdeck.  I've started filling in the central row of the top railing with 1x1mm walnut, and then I'll put the rail on the outside edge to complete. A 1mm brass wire was added at the bow end to straighten up the rail. It should be virtually invisible once complete, but should add strength too, for when (not if) I knock it!

    Happy building

Determining the planking belts. Tick strips were used to determine and mark the halfway point of the remaining area to be planked. This was done from bulkhead D through 4B. Adjustments were made based off these measurements.

I made the build board and test fit the frame assembly in it.  The right angle brackets are made from scraps and held together with epoxy.  I used factory corners from my plywood to ensure that they are accurately 90 degrees.  The one in the picture below is the best one of the bunch.

Been building masts and have now topped out S.R.'s final height. None of them are glued in place yet, just dry fit and will be coming back down soon to allow for the rigging to continue. She is no doubt a very large model.

Finally got the stem and stern sheets done and in the process discovered that I got the Sheet beams set a bit too high above the keel. When installing them, I measured on the plans from the Inwale down to the top of the beams and ended up putting the bottom of the beams at that position on the boat. This resulted in the Sheets being wider than the plans and an interesting herringbone pattern which I kinda like. Anyway, the height of the Sheets increase as a result of this mistake would only amount to about two inches on the prototype.

After the Sheets were made, they were stained.  Then I painted the inside of the boat. The Gunwales will be black.

I'm calling this boat finished! I considered making some additional items but as Sea Hoss pointed out above, there's no end to it all! Besides that, it's at the point now where it's starting to look cluttered already. I will make a glass display case but the Army is moving me very soon so, that will wait till I get to my new home away from home. I will also add a flag at a later date. The only things I haven't addressed already in my build log are:

    1. Thanks go to Dr Paul Schultz for supplying me with an extra swivel gun. I'm sure we aren't the only ones finding it odd that the kit has 3 mounts for the same gun, but only supplies 2 actual guns.

    2. I added a handle to the large swivel gun with brass rod and a turned wood handle. I don't know that much about such guns but it defies my experience how one would aim such a weapon.

As always, thanks for looking!!  And thanks for the help/advice to all that offered.

Got a few coats of wipe on poly on the floors and platforms, and added the cockpit benches, filled the gaps and sanded smooth.  a few coats of paint on the seats will be next up.

I have begun my build board 😊 So far, the diagram is only taped to the board as I am unsure how to properly affix it.  Also, I used a pine board which I sanded and I think it is smooth enough, however, I fear it may be a bit too soft.  The frame underneath the build board is certainly nothing to write home about.  All of my previous carving has been done with hand tools so the skill saw is very intimidating 😨.  At any rate, it begins😊 The ship's cat has also made her presence known😺

I have received the new plywood.  I'll have to get back to the print shop to get the 11x17 sheets but I have lots to do 'til then. Now starts the task (2nd time around) of cutting and sanding the formers and bulkheads.
I came across a YouTube video of a DIY scroll saw sanding blade.  The trick was double sided tape and a used saw blade.  Seems like a useful way to clean up the areas where neither the disk sander or spindle sander will reach.

The fore castle deck is now fully planked and galley chimney, hatches and ladder ways are in place. The shot garlands were quickly done - experience starts to make tasks easier. A strange detail is, that there is no rail to protect landlubbers (and others) against falling down the forward ladder way. But the skipper agrees with me, that a rail probably should be added.

The fore castle rails were glued on and the aft ends of the upper rails made with a pre-bent piece of boxwood strip. The gun carriages are reworked and I'm afraid I have to start gun rigging again.

The balcony is finished and the skipper can now take some fresh air in relative privacy during his visits to the build.

The skipper fell down this ladder way during his inspection tour. Only his dignity was hurt because he had to be extracted with the help of tweezers. Now he is thinking about adding a rail with some leftover stanchions and rope.

Summer break has passed. Because of high temperature during the last weeks the humidity in my workshop has been so high that even white glue wasn‘t drying in time. So I took a break from building, but now back to work. The stopping mechanism of the windlass was done today. I copied the one Chuck Passaro used as a part of the bowsprit step for cutter cheerful. Basically three layers of boxwood with the iron part fixed inside with two pins on each side and brought to shape with a needle file.

Last week I started the process of tick marking and lining off the hull. I used Chuck's templates which proved to be very helpful, though not perfect. My hull is not exactly the same as his, so after lining off the hull some adjustments were made before starting the planking of the first belt.

While adding the last plank of the third strake I noticed that there were still a few tick marks that were off a bit. For some peace of mind, I lined off that area of the hull again and adjusted the tick marks accordingly. Though not exactly a fun process, I can definitely see the benefit in lining off. Not doing it could lead to some regrets later on.
