  1. Great profiling as usual, Siggi. Good to see a post from you, I thought the workers might have gone on strike.
  2. Thank you, Andre. The lantern was a fun little project. I've enjoyed turning items on my poor man's lathe to the point where I've just about worn out the bearings in my drill. I thought about buying a lathe but it's hard to justify the cost for the few remaining years left to me for modeling. I'll continue to use the drill for turning till the end. Wishing you the best on your lantern and the Swift.
  3. Nice to see a post of your usual beautiful work.
  4. Is Shiloh going to be part of the family or is there a dark side to Shiloh's future?
  5. I see, you can carve a real nice eagle but a penguin, oh heck no. The quarter gallery windows look great! How's baby Bevo?
  6. Sam, welcome to MSW. Wishing you the very best with your project.
  7. Did you order it off eBay because the eBay delivery is by April 18th?
  8. Glenn, I agree with Roger, sometimes less is more. But I was looking for micro mesh and found the below. This is some pretty small stuff or so it appears plus the color works. https://www.ebay.com/itm/80-304-Stainless-Steel-Filter-Coarse-Dense-Gauze-Woven-Mesh-13-x-40-/393850633101
  9. Ian, welcome to MSW. Good to have you aboard.
  10. Tin, welcome to MSW. Hopefully you get all your questions answered on your Victory and are able to complete her successfully.
  11. The problem with cotton line is its fuzzy and it deteriorates rather rapidly. Adding beeswax only increases the deterioration process. I've worked on models that are twenty years old and the lines were already rotten. For these reasons I only use polyester thread. Polyester may stretch a bit more than cotton but I'd rather see a bit of droop than completely parted lines. Museums are even using polyester thread in some of their model restorations.
  12. Valeriy, this is so unbelievably well done that I'm left almost speechless.
  13. Wow, Glen, I love the way she's looking. The walnut galleries look great, much better than the first attempt. Great idea for the carriages. For future reference you might try working off ship using polymer clay for making galleries and such.
  14. Thank you, Brian. Years ago when I thought about reaching this point I couldn't see any beauty in rigging, all I could see was dreading a process I knew nothing about. All the rigging research I did has paid off as my level of comfort grows with each additional rigging element added. I can see the beauty now that I have a basic understanding of rigging. Thanks, Glen. Andrew, thank you. The ships from transitional period are such beauties but unfortunately so few are modeled. What a great project to undertake, modeling each ship that's carried the same name. I so hope you choose to scratch build the Screw Corvette. Please let me know if you do where I can get a front row seat. Mark, that means a lot to me. I'm trying to live up to the standards that you and others have set. I only know 'better' because of my MSW family. Thank you, Pat. If I have success it's due in large part because of you.
  15. Looks good, SU. You should make the chain more taut. The chain keeps the bowsprit from lifting due to the force of lift created by the running lines and stay.
  16. Hopefully that's all that it is, Mark. Thank you, Mark. I helped my situation some by adding a floor lamp with three 100 watt daylight LED bulbs. I can see what I'm working on better but I still need to take frequent breaks to rest my eyes but the breaks give me a chance to smoke my pipe.
  17. I hate hearing that, Mark. I so hope and pray they can provide you with a remedy that enables you to continue working with a smile. I'm almost there myself, I've pretty much give-up working past daylight.
  18. Mark, it's nice to see a update from you. The Sphinx is looking great, is vision no longer an issue? It must have been taken care of because of the nice, tidy work you're producing.
  19. Alex, welcome to MSW. I look forward to seeing your build log.
  20. Thank you to all for the comments and for the likes. The mizzenmast has finally been secured. I've rigged the mizzen to the best of my abilities in the space available and according to how I've interpreted the H&H photos. Due to my limited rigging knowledge and experience I'm somewhat suspect that the way I've rigged the mizzen might not be correct but there's no going back to make changes, it is what it is. Before starting the shrouds I need to add rope coils around the belaying pins at the base of the mizzen. I didn't add them yet as I wanted to show the blocks and the way I rigged them. The topsail and topgallant yard braces are temporary (I wanted to check their angles against the photos) as they will be in the way when running the shrouds. It's been a long time getting to this point. The further along i've gotten in the rigging process, the nagging questions I had regarding where and how different running lines attached to the deck and hull came easier and seemingly natural. Thank you to all for stopping by and sharing in my journey.
