  1. SS, welcome to MSW. Stow your gear in a build log and join us for the journey.
  2. Olga, yes, congratulations indeed! Well done and to think we got to watch her being built here in MSW, what a treat.
  3. Do I see a kitchen table refinishing in your future? Good to see you making progress, nice job.
  4. Allan, I would think the longevity of masking tape would depend on several factors. Natural, exposed to heat, 20 years? The way I've used it, it's painted, CA glued at the ends, and poly encapsulated. I can't even hazard a guess how long it will last in that state. I know it's very hard to remove as I redid the bow gun tracks and it didn't want to be removed!
  5. Joe, I use one inch 3M masking tape for all my banding as I am absolutely the worst at metal working. I lay out a five inch piece on a piece of wood and then cut to the desired width. If the banding/tape is going to be the same color as the object I apply all natural. If it's going to be say black on white, I cut to width, pull up the strip of tape, set it back on the board away from the five inch piece I just cut from, paint it the required color, and then apply. I add a tiny bit of CA where the ends meet. I use poly so eventually the tape edges also get adhered by the poly. I use masking tape for all sorts of items as in the case of the gun tracks and the coal scuttles at the ends of the companionway , that's masking tape. This method sure isn't for everybody but it's saved my bacon
  6. Maliba, that looks nice, very pleasing to the eye.
  7. Pat, Brian, and Gary, thank you for your words of support and a sincere thank you to all for the likes. These two photos show my impatience to see the mast with all the spars attached even though the six are raw without their bits and paint. I've envisioned this moment for such a long time it's almost surreal to finally see this stage close to completion. Nothing is jumping out at me screaming "stop the presses" so it's on to getting the six tidied up. I promise better photos when the six spars are rigged and hung.
  8. Tom, nice! Did our uncle say where and how he came by this little project he's saddled you with?
  9. Captain Stama, welcome to MSW. Enjoy yourself, just don't spill anything.
  10. In figure 13/2 inboard of the ladders it looks like a window, maybe? or pin rails?, it's hard to tell by the drawing. Obviously OcCre interpreted them as being pin rails.
  11. At the top of the column, doesn't it read "blocks/hearts" see photo.
  12. If you're not going to change the port covers then don't change the straps and make this build strictly a learning tool.
  13. Maliba, FYI. Notice In the illustration above, notice how the deadeye straps toward the stern run at an angle like so, / and gradually become straight up and down like so, I the closer the shrouds and straps get to the mast? See illustration below. This allows the pull/load of the shroud lines to be aligned with the straps. It's a very small detail but something you need to be aware of for future builds.
  14. Q-Tips work great for removing excess glue. I use them to wick away excess CA, when I've used yellow glue I dampen the Q-Tip first.
  15. Sigge, those look so nice, they were worth the effort.
  16. Ken, welcome to MSW. I look forward to seeing your Syren build. MSW members are very helpful, anytime you need assistance, just ask.
  17. I don't think they sell a thinner version? I use plastic containers to paint out of. I dip my paint brush in my white wash water and add dab alongside the white paint in the container. I then mix water with paint using my brush until I get it to the right consistency. The right consistence comes from experience, there isn't a formula, at least none that've I've seen.
