I am waiting on some cannon balls and casks and I have to make the flag to be completely finished. I mounted a swivel gun at the bow and constructed some cargo boxes out of cherry and walnut. Ammunition holders are made of red heart. I also threw some real deer and badger pelts. I have a real nice section of Walnut Burl Veneer I’ll be making the base from. This is one sweeeeeet kit. Love it.

There are a couple excellent build logs that take this model well beyond what is in the plans. You will enjoy.

I can’t sew, so I am thinking about bringing the plans to a seamstress.

Great job on the Lion’s Head carving. It adds a touch of Majesty to an already great model.

IMO, as I have demonstrated, it is your model build it, paint it, display it the way you want. Having been in the Navy for twenty five years and seeing some really dumb things I have no doubt that this is the way it was originally done. Then some able body seaman tired of explaining to the LT how stupid this set up was just moved the horse above the tiller. Before that I am sure some young lad put two blocks on the horse one on either side or made the tiller handle a quick remove and reinstall. Sailors are an inventive lot.

Rusty be VERY careful working around the rudder after it is installed. I broke mine off twice. Finally I just removed it and set it aside. I will reinstall AFTER it is on it’s stand. Your build looks outstanding. You might want to install your horse back aft at the same time as your rudder, don’t forget the block.....experience talking.😭

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
