Glue first layer planks?
VTHokiEE replied to Rivals's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
May I ask what your reasoning behind this would be? I can think of situations where it may be a good idea, but I don’t think it would be necessary the majority of the time. -
I must say you seem to be caught between two great choices. The “caulked” version looked great, and this version does too. Not to throw another wrench in the pile, but do you have a “lighter” pencil? Maybe that would be a good compromise? I assume you are going to cut the hull planks to be “realistic” lengths?

Nice job! PS - I have looked at the Battle Station in your last picture a time or two and it is much larger than I imagined. Neat to get a sense of scale to it.

Reducing mast circumference without a lathe
VTHokiEE replied to Charlie pal's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
I've seen these used before but I didn't fully grasp how to make one before (and I may not still 🙂), thanks for the link. I have a nice stock of Hard Maple for this purpose, but I never fully understood this whole process until now. Now to see if I can make one (I'm somewhat surprised they aren't sold). -
Is there nothing excel cannot do? 😂 I used Inkscape to make a grid following this tutorial: https://onceforpractice.com/make-your-own-graph-paper-with-inkscape/ I zoomed in so the grid would align with the measurements on the side and then adjusted the vertical grid size (why does this have to be in pixels?) to match my desired size and set the horizontal grid spacing to be larger than a standard piece of paper. I'll cut this down in order to fit as you mentioned.

I "think" the point is to make me so happy that I completed it that I don't mind doing the ratlines 😂. I did print off some lined paper in the hopes this helps getting even ratlines - we shall see. Along with the words above, pictures are all I need... well hopefully. I have one done but not trimmed yet, and I thought I had a second done, but once I completed the second one I decided the first one was not the right look so I get to undo that for the 5/6th time but who is counting (certainly not me... 😣)

Thanks @Gregory @Old Collingwood @glbarlow! I'd be upset if you didn't suggest it - of course that would look much cleaner (way too many "why didn't I think of that" moments building this model 🤔). I'm going to take a look at your Lady Nelson now that I think of it as well. I used a small wood sheet with a dowel (slightly smaller than the deadeye hole) glued in it. I then placed this contraption (pictured earlier) on the channel behind each deadeye and wrapped the shrouds to it. After, I slid a needle through the overlapping line to get a thread in place to start the seizing. I saw this mentioned elsewhere and completely ran with it. I did have to redo a few - they were too far out of alignment for my liking, but I wasn't going to stress too much about perfection here. I think I may end up with the loop and glue if add a bunch of loops (they kept unwinding on me).

Slow and steady progress, but the shrouds are up! I struggled to try to replicate tying off the lanyards as depicted above so I may simply wing it, but no decisions have been made yet 😄. Currently I'm doing what I do best when I can't figure out how I want to approach something (those lanyards) and adding shroud cleats (from Syren instead of the kit provided photo etch). After that I'll probably ty off those lanyards and start on the rate lines I suppose. For anyone doing this build later I really wished that I had added this lower deadeye to the stay before attaching it to the hull. I think I would've tried to potentially fabricate a deadeye holder out of brass wire. There wasn't any direction in the instructions so I simply used some rope, which doesn't seem right but isn't visible from a normal viewing distance regardless.

Reducing mast circumference without a lathe
VTHokiEE replied to Charlie pal's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
I haven't been able to fully understand how to set the taper with this process (and I don't really know how to set up my plane quite yet :-). Is there a tutorial on this method? Does the V-jig set the taper? -
glue for planking
VTHokiEE replied to BOB S.'s topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
You most certainly can use wood glue (many do). I assume that the directions suggest super glue because it may be tricky to get the planks clamped in place while the glue dries. There is no real reason why you can’t use wood glue. -
Have you used the water based with synthetic (polyester) line at all?

Reducing mast circumference without a lathe
VTHokiEE replied to Charlie pal's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Very recently I used strips of sandpaper (varying in grit as I reduced the mast) on a dowel rotating in my electric drill. I used a digital caliper to check my progress quite frequently. -
Thanks a lot Glenn - I’ve been putting off making a set of these for a little while but I’ll have to get on them. Your Cheerful is a work of art - I’m looking forward to watching you rig her.

I should keep this a secret, but I completely eyeballed my depth marker. I suppose I could have made dots to glue them on, but they looked right to me eye. It’s a neat look you’re achieving. Eventually I’d like to learn some weathering techniques, but baby steps.

I was purchasing some fly tying line at the same time and used Essential Fly from the UK. I believe the manufacturer is from the UK so it may not be over here. The shipping was maybe $5 and took about a month to get here. Last time I looked I think I saw a store in Canada that had it, but if I couldn’t find it over here I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again.

Awesome, thank you! Thanks Bob! That glue is great, I’m using it a good deal and you only need a drop so it goes a long way. I purchased the Rope Walk from Syren and have been making my rope from Gutermann Mara thread in my garage 🙂. If you’re interested let me know and I’d be glad to share what I’ve learned. Yes, I buy these 0.3mm - 1.3mm drill bits in bulk for things like this. I forget exactly but the nails in the kit are 0.7mm (I think) so I would’ve used at most a 0.8mm bit for the pins. Then I clipped off the top on the pin and pushed it into the holes. I used this to then mark the holes on the hull before drilling those out as well. I believe you are skipping the cannons, but you may still want to keep an eye on the deadeye alignment with the gun ports (...maybe).

As long as you are enjoying it then it is all good and the next one will be even better! I do have an update today. The shrouds scared me so I did what I assume everyone does and procrastinate and do something else such as finish the mast. Of course procrastinating only helps for so long and eventually I had to buckle in and attach a deadeye. I followed a tutorial by @DelF which led me to an idea for a jig. I drilled a hole for a dowel that was slightly smaller than the deadeye to wrap the shroud around. I also drilled a small hole to press a threaded needle through to hold the loop in place (I have my fingers crossed that this gets my deadeyes close to level). By the way - How exactly does one tie off the rigging through the deadeye? I plan on leaving the line somewhat lose until all the shrouds are up (and I'm still hesitant to trim the shroud until I have a few more on to make certain that I'm happy), but it'd be good to get a plan in place I assume.

Thank you! How is yours coming along? For me the key to rigging is taking a deep breathe and allowing yourself to slowdown. Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of the rope that came in the kit so I'm replacing it all (I read that newer kits will have updated rope which I want to point out in case anyone reads this in the future).

Dust extractor - compact and quiet?
VTHokiEE replied to Rik Thistle's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Am I correct that you still need to vacuum up afterwards? -
I’m sorry to hear that, but at the same time I’m glad that it sounds like you’re holding up strong. I have this tendency as well, becoming super obsessed about a hobby which really is to the detriment of the hobby because I end up interested in something else. I’ve been working on getting back to healthy relationships with my hobbies (a little tough with little kids and minimal completely free time :-), but I’m glad to be integrating my old live of photography into my hobby which has led me back to taking pictures of the family and other things. Now that I realize I’m rambling I’ll reign in with being a huge fan of your guitar playing. That’s something I wish I had learned, if I could go back in time I would tell myself to choose guitar instead of trumpet in 5th grade 😃.
