My method to build these blocks on my Alert and reduce the gap was to thread one line through the individual strands in the other line to make almost a false splice around the smaller block (if the line was 4 stranded the the needle would go between two strands). Then I took these ends around the larger block and seized them together. As I type this I realize that my text description is failing miserably, but if you are interested I could make up a block and take some photos during the process that should explain it a lot better. Final product shown here: https://modelshipworld.com/topic/22920-hm-cutter-alert-by-vthokiee-finished-vanguard-models-164/?do=findComment&comment=774906

Thank you @Zocane! It is very much appreciated. I hope you end up posting some pictures when you’re finished to the gallery. I would love to take a look at it. That sounds really nice; I bet it looks awesome. My first build was a Midwest Chesapeake Flattie and I certainly learned many of those lessons on that build. Hopefully each build has a few less “what not to do in the future” than the build before. Thanks again and I hope to see some of your work eventually!

Advice needed. How much rope do I need?
VTHokiEE replied to bruce d's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
My word of caution would be to over estimate, at least for me I don't like to tie knots with a tiny piece of rope so I tend to have a higher waste amount (but I try to save the trimmed pieces for rope rope coils). -
Ha, I had this exact thought once I attached the bowsprit and the mast on my Alert. It also makes one start to consider the “admiralty-style” (if that’s even correct) with the stub mast and bowsprit for space reason.

kit review 1:48 HMS Granado ‘Cross Section’
VTHokiEE replied to James H's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
I will be in for a group build. I was contemplating a scratch cross section (and still might), but I’d definitely enjoy a group build on this. -
Thanks guys! There’ll be a slight intermission (I want/need to finish the NRG half hull) but I’m a huge fan of Ancient Greece/Rome so I picked up the MarisStella Liburnian Monoreme kit for when I settle back into the next build. Thanks Richard! I’m currently wandering the seas of my house trying to decide where she should be harbored (apparently a very difficult decision for me), but eventually she’ll be harbored in calm waters 😄.

@Blue Ensign Thank you - your log was truely an inspiration and I appreciate all the help you (and @DelF, @glbarlow, @Gregory and everyone else gave me on the way). @chris watton I also can't thank you enough for all your patience and help on the build. You did a wonderful job designing it and every new release looks that much better! @drjeckl @Oboship @Edwardkenway @James H Thank you all for the comments! Photos will be placed in the gallery shortly. @WalrusGuy I appreciate it - I'm pleased with how that flag came out and I feel like it gives the ship a little something extra (splash of color or something 😁)

After a little over a year I have finished my Alert (completion shots below and it appears that I may have to do a little dusting already). One note that may help new builders in the future (but it may not be the ideal method) is that after I overpainted the flag (on silkspan) and let the paint dry I misted it with water, shaped it and then let it dry out again. Once it was dry the flag held it's shape very well. I have picked up Vanguard's version 1 of their 18' cutter (if I had only waited a week or so I couldn't gotten V2, but timing is everything 😄) which I hope to complete for the final display and I have to figure out a case so I'll hopefully add a few final encased pictures when the time comes. I enjoyed this kit very much - thank you all for following along and all the likes, advice and words of encouragement.

I haven't tried this method at all and I don't know how it translates from the paper in this log to cloths, but have you thought about weathering powders at all? https://modelshipworld.com/topic/15584-a-method-for-making-panelled-sails-using-paper/?tab=comments#comment-484457

I moved the anchor a few times and for the moment I settled on a position slightly back. It is not perfect (there still is some interference), so I am open to suggestions, but without a better idea I think that it could work. 🤔

Thanks Glenn! I picked it up from here: http://www.hobbyworld-usa.com/Store/index.php?id_product=2074&controller=product I'm at a little bit of a quandary - how do I lash the anchors? When I try to tie them off the stock seems to interfere with the rigging below as shown here: I'll keep looking for a solution, but how should I lash this so it doesn't interfere with the rigging? I'm not quite following the lashing in the instructions - that calls for it to be looped off the cathead, but even doing that appears as it will cause some interference... Hmmm. Edit: It looks like the instructions have the anchor one timber head further back. I think (hope?) this will provide enough clearance.

Thanks @drjeckl @Ryland Craze @EricWilliamMarshall @Edwardkenway I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I’ll look into those places this weekend (I also need to scout the house an land on a location which may impact the case). Ironically I have a source for plexiglass but lack the tools to make my own case at the moment.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
