Looking at the pic's Jo......... their is a big distance between bulkheads at midship........ if the distance from bulkhead to bulkhead is 2" or more....... your planks will dimple and rise in those area's....... as you can see on the hull of my 1st build. you could make 2 bulkheads out of 1/8" balsa wood and that would give you the backing you need.

Yeah, i remember building some motorcycles, it was like working on a fish out of the water......... at least for me it was.😄 i used testors metalizer on an F-102 a couple years ago........ and the stuff makes plastic look like real metal . don't know if you are aware of it, you want to go with the bottel'd buffing. you can see more about it on youtube. you can't use metalizer over enamel paint. metalizer is lacquer, it will react like paint stripper on the enamel.

I think that model would have look'd better, if he had the flag on it......... after all he has crew members deck side....... of course the way it is say's it's in combat mode. but having the flag makes the statement to anybody. that this is a wwII german u boat.

Somebody on this site posted this link.......... it's niece....... because i can't tie knot's either.......... and yes you are right weathering is addicting🙂 https://www.animatedknots.com/complete-knot-list

GREAT work on the dory............. i'd have to use a microscope to try to build something like that.

I used Chuck's method , here on my first build....... planks were edge bent all the way down to the garboard. i used a hair dryer on high heat....... get's plank hot real fast. i also used rubbing alcohol 70% type, to wet the plank with my fingers........ the alcohol evaporates faster.

FINE WORK Gary ! you realy hit the nail on the head, with that tone of rust that is around the stack & bracket. that's the color you would see do to engine vibrations.👍

another problem is the instructions on the rigging...... their is no ratlines. i think a vessel this size would have had ratlines. if you look over the rigging instructions............ then where do you tie the lines off etc.etc.etc. i found out about these book's on this site. the author only made two books on riggging and it was suggested to by both... and i did, and they answear all the rigging problems.... you can find them on ebay

pic's of my virginia1819....... my first build..... and still building 🙂 study instructions.... thier missleading.... build deck furniture but don't mount it..... it will be in the way of making railings........ check your rudder, mine was to short.... had to make one from scrach. their was no water drain ports ( scuppers ) i had to make those from looking at the pic on the box........ one thing about this kit is...... you will get experince & education if you study here on this site......... go here to learn about planking http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-framing-and-planking-articles.php i plank'd my hull one time, if you chose to do this...... check the bulk head distance from one another, i faild to do this and as a result two planks dimppeld on me....... take your time , you are learning new things enjoy🙂

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
