Tormenting ... you are puttin' me off for the build! Might as well get me a RN cruiser to build and get New Zealand added to the commonwealth games, or just pick a box from the wood-stock

I have enjoyed the journey tremendously. I love the detail you've managed to get into the parts of the ship like the ensign post ... the thin brass rod, the PE used for the antennas, the 3D printed grating around the funnels ... marvelous. A pitty it has ended. Hope to see another new superb build by you. Thank you for sharing

Chris, As Eric wrote, you can still give your deck some additional (depth of) colour with pastels. You can even apply shading around doors/windows. With the plastic builds you add rust or stains with pastels either dry brushed (I use a hard brush to rub it on) or by dissolving it in water. For the latter I use water colour/aquarel brushes, depending on the purpose flat or round. You can then apply it to whatever painted object you want. If it's to strong you can rub it off with a stiff brush - take care of the painted surface - when applied wet either a dry or a wet brush. I've used white, black, brown, yellow, and blue to get the effect I wanted on the decks. The rust was applied wet with a very small brush or a sponge, depended on the effect. However, don't just jump in, try it on some practice material Cheers

Fortunately, gents, these guns do not smoke since she isn't finished yet, and when she is, that will only happen unless I take a match to the her, but I hope to have outgrown that stadium of infancy ...

Fokker Dr.I by Mike Dowling - FINISHED - Artesania Latina
cog replied to Mike Dowling's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
you're getting a fleet ... looks good from down here Mike -
You do. I've had those black ones, and they have the tendency to break when they are under a lot of strain, so you run the risk running out of clamps with what you have anyway
-
good to hear from you Patrick. Life has it ways with whatever we're doing ... I like the interior developing, looks a bit sixties at the scale ... nice work Cheers
-
Playing with guns again, Mark ... Thought you were deep into ship's boats ... ... or are those the armed sloops
-
You cab always get some 3D parts to enhance your build: superstructure, funnel, main top so much choice ... you do not need the larger scale anymore to get the detail
-
On the matter of close ups ... take more distance :) Can't you strain the paint through a fine sieve ...
-
At the scale you're working a lot seems as a trivial update, whilst you may have been at it for any number of hours ... Yesterday I chucked some brass eyelets (8pcs), a "balcony", and a grating on a funnel the size of an inch long pencil ... it took me 3 hours, and it doesn't show it, hell, you can hardly see the brass on the funnel

You could always do the arizona in metal

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
