Congratulations Vladimir.  I have very much enjoyed following your build, especially watching you overcome the hurdles you met along the way.  That is a very nicely detailed, cleanly finished model.  You should be proud of your efforts on this one.

    cheers

    Pat

Thank you Pat and everyone. Youve been great help and support along.

    Good evening.

I will start new log for 24 pdr french frigate Egyptienne starting new year 2024.

There has been some intensive work ongoing as Im finishing pob bulkheads work from monograph plans.

This is my first ancre build, but hull seem pretty straightforward, yet it is very difficult subject due to intense and  advance carving at stern.

Anyway, I wont go in detail about her history, however, its so little of her here for many reasons. Im fan of napoleoninc era etc. Its important to stress, that this magnificent vessel carried famous rosetta stone from egypt to england alrrady under english flqg as been captured in siege of alexandria and became english afterwards.

designed by Faro, Two vessels were similar. I see one or two logs on her so there will hopefully be a lot to discuss :)

I already started but unusual. backwards so I have most difficult part behind me. I hand carved stern plate on boxwood, and painted black so its different that colorless prototype. you can see slightly simplified ornamentals as those acanthus leaves are beyond my skill. thus even with this omission   I hope I stayed true to

originalIMG_20231217_191658.thumb.jpg.af35e024c5a4744817709ab2c0e61cf6.jpg as well as with female figure with mirror palm trees and pyramids. Floral element below is not yet fyluply completed but almost. Bow elements are verybdifficult but i hope to obtain some machinery in next year or so so I can simplify work. I intend to plank her with boxwood so light tone with black wales. But many to discuss later :).

    IMG_20231217_191715.thumb.jpg.d0752d2c3296dc5bc2f82fe0852099e1.jpg

I will apreciate any comment suggestion remark etc...Sure im learing from more experienced builders here, and with experiences I already have.

So excited to enter my first french territory. I count few years until completed, planned full  with rigging and sails.

Good productive week to  everyone and MERRY CHRISTMAS, good health etc...

  4. Hi. This could maybe help someone , but probably to me as well.
I consider myself intermediate builder , with 5 years experience.
And I locked myself into a trap.
Having  built frigate from syrenshipmodel company myself, there is vast vast difference ... I cant find any other commercial model company giving me same satisfying experience I clearly see it just looking at model. Even I want to find it. There is much more to it than just perfectly  fitting outstanding parts. Instructions guite etcetera is second to none. its closest as sou could get to museums master models of past century apart of hand carving of course.
because chosen scale is important - for details ship is decorated with. And level of details and acuracy ... i can continue...
and now Im on verge if investing to their costly upcoming model or what to do. As Im not eager to "improve typical ship with mdiocre detailing etc..." or ...even thinking of other models for that reason. there is certain assurednes in guide one cannot fail with some experience or even build half of model as scratch. freedom it is as well...

investing into scratch model building machinery = but  i can buy costly model instead and work with simple tools. :)

hope it helps. Or adds confusion :)

She is looking very nice Vlad.  What have you considered to do with her when she is complete?  build a case..?  Put her in a place of honor in your home?

    Rob

    Thanks much Rob.

    You know I was thinking.

I want to build nice case but she is not completed yet. I dont wish to keep her. I was not building her with that purpose in mind. I  dont think she belongs to me here, I never kept any model I bulit so far. I dont have this posession goal, never have. when im over I pass things on and go to another work. I learnt a crazy lot on  vesides, there has been substantial research.. its american ship. I guess even if i never built american ship I did quite a bit for americas maritime history even building this vessel. So I will try to pass her on to whomever wherever possible .... :) ...its probably closest as it ever gets to original McKays...thanks to You, Richard, Druxey, Michael Mjelde, and more.....I dont want to spare anyone. Working and learning together with You guys on her was for me far more valuable experience  than model itself. Mind you, I like looking at her very much. I gave her my best. :))) Id like she end up in usa somehow, or Australia, where she had its routes and history as well... so could be seen by people... but it doesnt depend on me at the slightest...just thinking and dreaming loud...or i could sell jer for laughable fraction of effort to buy another mode... etc.... who knows :)))

  6. Rigging completed.

    Braces are completed.

I cant quite believe all rigging is behind me.

    ouch.

There will be one more last chapter, rudder and flag from here. What a relief.

  7. Mizzen mast yards braces are done. Hooray.  only 12 more to go.

Main mast top & cap are getting crowded as 3 pairs of braces added. low upper topsail yards are crojack.

red arrow are biggest single blocks for crojqck under top andgreen abaft top are smaller for lower topsail.

    IMG_20231203_145332.thumb.jpg.29f60e52683155d1ddbaaa10f97691d9.jpg

now all braces up. cap is raking double block for upper topsail yard braces as they ate purchased with whip so lose end is tied to mizzen topgallant forestay and thru purcjase to double block and down to rail.

now mizzen yards stand shipshape in one line ....although i have to redo topgallant footrope that went loose.

After this phase I will skip again as there is place for hands and tweezer to do small cleanups and important things like attaching ends of ropes to fiferails, installing some rope at deck and attaching lower mast sheet blocks...

    before last braces.

thanks much for any comment till then.

Thanks much everyone for bearing with me, as I freak out sometimes probably untill I grasp the matter. So finally I finished uoper yards. all pinned and clear. I must say it was easier at the end than seemed at first, and seing order at the deck is astounding me despite of lines that are amassing more and more. For aforementioned whip, I realised its similar matter of choice as with hanging lower yards. Euther there is a whip under at fiferails or above yard for sake of space at fiferails.

If i understood correctly, There is omision possible usualplly for royal yard brace, as for yard being lightweight. But nilot so for lower heavuer yards. goal is to make hauling possible or easier i guess. Correct me if i am wrong here pls. Anyway, as I went for having almost all uper yards braces whipped( purchase) at the upper part, I didnt bother with whipping down at deck level, basically I led those thru blbrace block at backstay position down to the corresponding pin and rail.

This post will be longer and full if pics so I hope it will make a sense and not confusion.

    ....

    1.

Apology for amateur pics with undesired objects in backround. We can see order and outcome. Red arrow points to main skysail yard brace, its surprising it ends at very top  if mizzen mast where it is quite weak but I followed gpory photograph we have. Also Robs and Mr. Mjelde plan helped me a lot with braces. As well as EdT. I didnt compare others. green arrow is Main royal brace and blue arrow poins to main topgalland yard. Violet poijt to fore royal and yellow to fore topgallant.

White arrows are for mizzen yards braces  heading forward being manned abaft main mast.

    2. preparations.

Various blocks had to be installed beforehand to recieve brace leads.

E.g. for nlmain togallant yard there are two lead blocks under crosstree andcthere us yet missing block anaft mast at stay that woupd lead brace downwards. one side of  purchase blocks are tied to forestay and another will come from yard.

Now. Back side or fiferail  of main mast is quite busy as it receives braces from mizen mast. ....

these are managed thru double blocks at capstay, anf under crosstree of main mast.

what else should be added now. I already received bigger boocks for remained three yards down which are manned quite differently so I look forward to it. Yes enda is near but there is still a lot of small works and cleanups. :)

funally this us enjoyable part but its challenging sometimes run thread thru hole. Tweezers and hand drill are my maij tolls now.

I will add few hopefully interesting pics I tried to take from rather unique and interesting angles from person view sky up from the deck as being at real shipm irs full of lines but there is i hooe brautifull symmetry to all that at p&s side.

Thank you very much for looking in. I dont post that often and there wil be orobably two or three more posts before im done. its been 4 yeads now folks..:)))

    Vlad,

I'm not sure if you've worked out the lead of braces from Underhill as yet.

I was looking at that diagram today. Picture attached with an explanation (my interpretation), that I hope makes it clear.

    Regards,

    Grant.

Grant, thank you.I much appreciate the effort to unpuzzle this pic. Yes I organized it with similar fashion though, I dont hqve it pinned at the deck so it is reall mess with some clips all over. I will post it when done. aso basically from the top to bottom, three yards are done. i had to order blocks for bottom yards meanwhile. V.

  10. Ok i think i got it. Its same matter with whip as in many thinks. Basically its matter of size of vessel. Bigger the ship, its necessity plof purchase to do the task due to wught of yards etc.

So, we even have photo showing pretty mucj nraces of glory from quite early date.

what is interesting to observe even fore  royal yard has block whip so i assume there is not one needed at the bottom, at the.  deck. i made it this fashion, with topgallant yard having whip at the deck. but to that later as  it is not completed yet. you xan see start of work at yards level now.

    Screenshot_2023-11-19-11-21-01-395_com_miui.gallery.thumb.jpg.41f765b19f8b995e59681ebb8713b56d.jpg

  11. OK - braces are pita. worst nightmare.

well im probably overcomplicating it a bit, but untill i grasp matter sufficiently enough I made myself a boundaries not to make it wrong at least i need to perfectly underatand it first.

my vague english doesnt help much i guess so I maybe struggle with few terms and imagination obviously.

    ..

first. this is probably later era of bracing, what Underhill describes but its only source i have so here it goes.

    fore royal brace

single wire, shackled to the after side of the yard arm band  - perfectly clear

reeved through a single block on the side of the mast at the main topgallant hounds ( or stay , to keep brace below foot of main royal sail. - perfectly clear.

    and now -

From the lead block at the hounds the brace goes down -inside the backstay

    ?????

and is spliced into the eye of single block for the whip  - ???? (what is whip in this meaning please?

    and it goes on:

The standing end of the whip is seized to the main topmast capstay - clear

Well Vlad.  Several paintings show several different insertion and block points for both the fore topgallant and the fore royal braces.

Dependent on her modification year.   I think in your case...the fore topgallant inserted and had a downhaul block located at the crosstree base of the topgallant mast on the main, and the royal inserted and downhaul block was located under the main topgallant yard....where the shrouds affixed to the topgallant/royal mast stepping.

I inserted and ran both fore topgallant/royal braces back to their downhaul blocks at the main mast topgallant crosstree base.  These then ran back and down to their respective purchase blocks on opposite sides of the bulwarks to a return block and then to their pin on the rail.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks much Rob, i will elaborate on that later. I guess I will have to draw it for myself to absorb it :) V.

  13. Dear all, I guess I need help Folks. :)

Can anyone explain to me fore royal and topgallant bracing? I admit Im lost in Underhill regarding this.

Bottom yards are self explanatory but royal?

I get that brace goes from yardarm to the single block at topgallant hound of main mast.

...but where it is heading down from that block down is mystery to me so far. I cant continue till I resolve this conundrum.

    maybe  Rob ? :)

unfortunately EdT young america is not helpuling in this regard as well. At this point net is pretty dense....

    many thanks V.

  14. hello, there has been an slow but continuous update heading towards last chapter which will be yards horizontal manouvering rig. braces.

Gaffs rig is finally tighten yet not secured. i didnt include sails rig only timbers ..and i dont have small cleats so far.

Spencer was rigged as wrell with vangs, and all remained vertical staysails, topgallants and royals.

at this point i Will start braces gojng from the top down direction.

    It will still take time.

Thanks everyone who remained eatchonv this endless task.

    all best

    Vlad
