  1. First up, I have to state this is not a complete log.  I started the Granado in 2005 in a Group Build whose name I have since forgot. Unfortunately the group build web site was hacked into oblivion and all files lost.  I have recently found some of my old photos of my progress and thought I would share them.

Notice that well into the build, late in 2006, I caught the “bashing” bug from Steve “Stu” Hall of Ontario and decided to cut out some of the stern bulkheads and detail the after cabins.  See photos.

Shortly after I started the build, my wife and I acquired a travel trailer and I did much of the subsequent build on the road. That ended once I started the masts.  In the next week or so she will finally be finished.  So save a seat for the big reveal.

  2. I have a copy of this book in excellent condition.

Vasa I: The Archaeology of a Swedish Royal Ship of 1628 (Statens Maritima Museer (National Maritime Museum of Sweden)) (Hardcover)
I am trying to reduce my library and will sell this for $100 plus shipping cost.
Send me a private message if you are interested or want to make an offer. It lists at over $170 on Amazon.
  3. If you like the Stearman bi-plane you will enjoy “Cannibal Queen” by Stephen Coonts.  The book relates Coonts’ travels around the USA in his Stearman, The Cannibal Queen; so named because she’d bite you in the *** if you weren’t careful. I found it amusing that Coonts, who flew A6 Intruders, kind of had to learn to fly all over again with a tail dragging bi-plane.

Actually, i have made no more progress. Too much going on right now,

I tossed the whole thing in the trash. I recently purchased a paper model of the USS United States from Model Dock Yard. I plan to start another build log in the near future. I hope this one goes better.  I have followed Dan Vadas' advice and made an index of all the parts so I can easily find the page they are on and each page is in a plastic page protector in a ring-binder.

  5. Although I did a lot of hull work on my Granado while on camping trips around the country, now that I am rigging her that is no longer an option.  So, on our last trip to Florida I grabbed this Tamiya kit from my stash. Everything but the decals was done on picnic tables throughout Florida.  The decals I saved until we returned home. Gad, some are so tiny they are nearly invisible when removed from the backing.

Ron, U.S. card stocks are usually sold by weight, with card stock being labeled anywhere between 60 and 120 lb. Since you have experience with card kits, just grab whatever looks and feels right. You can use spray adhesive to laminate sheets together for thicker stock. Also, ask the counter clerks at the store if they have remnants from opened packages available for you to examine. That way you can "test drive" a particular stock by the sheet instead of buying an entire package.

    I didn’t think I’d find samples available. I’ll give it a try.

Hey, Ron. Don't fret! You took on a fairly challenging project. My first couple of card models wound up in the trash, too -- there's a learning curve, to be sure. When you get around to feeling like another try, may I suggest having a crack at a free model? There's some good ones out there.

I’ve looked at some free models. Can’t decide what to try, decisions decisions 😬
