  1. Beautiful wood colour contrast there, Danny - and not a bad bit of cabinet work, as well! John
  2. Ollie, Eamonn has given you good advice. The tackle should be rigged as shown in this photo of a carronade on the Trincomalee. The line is spiced to the strop on the single block; through the first sheave of the double block; back through the sheave of the single block and then back through the second sheave of the double block. You can also see that the blocks are 'hook blocks' - attached by hooks for easy removal and re-positioning - you can get away with simple attachments to the rings. John
  3. Nice to see some progress on this one as well, Danny! John
  4. Nicely done, Danny. Can I ask why you glued the three pieces together before finishing the carving - was it for strength? John
  5. Richard, The full size caulking is so narrow (maybe 1/4 inch), that it's best represented by simply colouring one side of each plank so that it shows as a black line on the model. Most people do this by using a pencil or an archive quality marker pen. John
  6. Ollie, Isn't Ita crossing the coast north of Cooktown? I thought you were a bit further south. Anyway, if you're in the firing line, make sure you keep your head down - category 5's are not to be toyed with!! By the way, make sure your breaching ropes are long enough so that the guns can run right inboard. John
  7. Crikey, mate, it looks like you've got all the gear there now! have fun. John
  8. Well, don't just stand there, Mark - forward the whole lot on to me! John
  9. Ollie, If you're thinking of sails, you might like to have a look at a couple of contemporary models with sails at the NMM at Greenwich for some ideas. Here are a couple of links: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66568.html http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66275.html John
  10. Coming along nicely, Ollie. Those mast bands could be a bit thinner if you wanted to alter them. John
  11. Like the 'S' bend in the strap, Danny. Your blacksmithing continues to impress! John
  12. Looking good, Bob. I would guess that the thicker planks are for additional longitudinal strength. John
  13. Beautiful overall photos showing the model to good advantage, Bruce. John
